The final fifteen minutes at the Calderón were a war.
Atlético poured forward in search of a winner, knowing that beating Barcelona would delay the title celebration and potentially rattle a side that had stayed unbeaten all season. Diego Costa ran until his lungs burned, chasing down every clearance and throwing his frame into every challenge. Arda Turan and Koke pushed the tempo through the middle, while forty-five thousand fans roared for the goal that would derail the league leaders.
Barcelona held their ground under the storm. Piqué and Mascherano organized the box cleanly, Busquets stepped in to sweep up loose second balls, and the front three kept probing the channels, waiting for Atlético to leave a gap.
The opening finally arrived in the 83rd minute.
Busquets rose highest to win an aerial duel off a long clearance from Courtois, nodding the ball down into Iniesta's path. Iniesta protected the ball calmly, pulled two red-and-white shirts toward him, and laid a pass off to Messi on the right wing.
He had to either stick to his assignment or step up to challenge one of the best dribblers in the world. The Uruguayan hesitated for a fraction of a second.
That split-second indecision was plenty.
Lorenzo spotted the opening and bolted. He peeled off Miranda's shoulder toward the center, darting into the vacant channel Godín had just left open. Messi read the run instantly, threading a pinpoint pass between the two center-backs straight into Lorenzo's path at the edge of the box.
For the first time in eighty-three minutes of grueling football, Lorenzo Valentini found himself facing the target with genuine open grass ahead.
He made it count.
He used his first touch to push the ball forward into his stride, exploding into a sudden burst of pace. Miranda threw out a desperate leg and caught nothing. Gabi slid across to provide cover, but Lorenzo skipped past the challenge with total control, slicing straight through the backline and into the D.
The goal opened up before him.
Courtois set his feet and braced for the shot. Lorenzo skipped any delicate placement or cute finishes. From twenty yards out, putting every bit of power in his right leg behind the strike, he hammered the ball on the half-volley.
The shot was an absolute missile. It whistled through the Madrid air with tremendous velocity, rising steadily and blowing past Courtois's fingertips before the goalkeeper could even fully extend his dive. The upper netting rippled hard.
Atlético 2, Barcelona 3.
For one breathless second, the entire stadium went dead silent.
Then the corner where traveling Barcelona supporters were packed exploded into deafening noise.
"LORENZO...." Santiago screamed into his headset, his voice cracking with pure excitement. "IT IS THREE-TWO! HE HAS WON IT! Marked by three defenders all evening long, and the moment he gets one clean yard of daylight, he buries the championship! Barcelona have their hands on the trophy!"
Inés chimed in as the camera cut to the traveling fans. "He beats two defenders on the burst and unleashes a thunderbolt from distance that Courtois couldn't get near. They shadowed him all match, but one momentary lapse was all it took. That is what top-level finishing looks like."
Lorenzo sprinted straight for the away supporters with his arms spread wide, followed by the entire Barcelona squad in frantic pursuit. Neymar caught him around the waist first, Messi jumped onto his shoulders a second later, and within moments, Iniesta, Busquets, Xavi, and Piqué joined the massive pile on the grass. Even Puyol jogged over in his tracksuit, and Martino stepped out of his technical box with his hands over his face in pure relief.
The entire team collapsed into a chaotic heap of celebration in front of the singing away fans.
The final seven minutes remained tense, as Atlético threw everything into one last push. Diego Costa managed to force a smart low save from Valdés in the 90th minute, but the equalizer never came. Barcelona cleared their lines and ran the clock down near the flags.
The referee finally blew the whistle three times.
Full time: Fweet! Fweet! Fweeeeet!
Atlético Madrid 2, Barcelona 3.
FC Barcelona were officially champions of Spain.
The traveling section kept singing at the top of their lungs while players sank to the grass in sheer exhaustion. Xavi fell to his knees with a wide smile, Iniesta lay flat on his back taking in the moment, and Neymar wiped away tears of joy as he embraced Alves. Messi walked over to the away supporters with both hands raised in appreciation, with Lorenzo right alongside him, soaking in the thunderous chants echoing from the stands.
The post-match respect came shortly after.
Simeone met Martino near the center circle. The two managers shared a warm, firm handshake, exchanging a few quiet words of genuine mutual respect between tactical rivals.
A moment later, Diego Costa walked over to Lorenzo.
The Atlético forward was drenched in sweat, his shirt already pulled off, looking visibly exhausted from carrying his team's attack. Yet he walked directly up to Lorenzo and held out the red-and-white jersey.
"Want to swap shirts?" Costa asked, catching his breath.
"Yeah, definitely," Lorenzo replied, pulling his jersey over his head and handing it across.
Lorenzo took Costa's shirt in return. "You had a massive game out there, honestly. That opening goal was incredible."
Costa offered a dry, rueful grin. "Yeah, well, it clearly wasn't enough to get the job done tonight." He glanced over at the celebrating Barcelona players before looking back at Lorenzo. "You're joining up with the national team for the World Cup camp, right?"
"Yeah, I'll be there."
"Good. Then I guess I'll see you in Madrid soon," Costa said, tossing Lorenzo's jersey over his shoulder. "We stop trying to kick each other once June starts. Just do me a favor and try not to rub this title in too much when we get to camp."
Lorenzo let out a laugh. "I'll try my best, but honestly, no promises."
Costa shook his head with a faint smirk and turned toward the tunnel.
Across the pitch, the celebrations carried on long into the night, as Barcelona claimed the Spanish league title with two matches to spare, standing tall at the top of the table without a single defeat all season.
