Chapter 226 - Chapter 226: The Iron Wall! Diego Costa Draws First Blood! The Calderón Erupts!

Atlético's defensive blueprint showed its teeth inside the opening five minutes.

Whenever Lorenzo looked to receive the ball, Godín was right on his back. The Uruguayan wasn't simply looking for clean tackles; he made sure every touch became an exhausting physical wrestling match. When Lorenzo dropped deep toward the midfield line, Miranda stepped out to track him step for step. If he drifted into the wide channels, Juanfran immediately tucked inside to double up. Two imposing center-backs and a relentless fullback rotated around the teenager like a defensive machine designed for a singular target.

In the 4th minute, Godín challenged for an aerial duel and mistimed his leap, catching Lorenzo across the jaw with an awkward trailing forearm. The referee judged it an accidental collision and waved play on. Lorenzo picked himself up off the turf, rubbed the soreness out of his chin, and jogged straight back into position without making a fuss.

Seven minutes later, Lorenzo received with his back to goal and tried to spin on the half-turn, but Miranda timed his challenge aggressively from behind, clipping through his calves to break up the attack. The referee whistled for the foul, though he kept his cards tucked away for a standard tactical challenge. Along the touchline, Diego Simeone gave two sharp claps of encouragement for the disciplined defensive stop.

"The match officials are definitely setting a very permissive physical threshold tonight," Santiago noted from the commentary gantry. "Lorenzo has hit the turf three times inside the opening quarter of an hour, and the referee seems perfectly content to let the physical battles play out without cautions."

Inés leaned closer to her microphone. "Honestly, this is precisely the tempo Simeone spent all week planning for. By drawing the referee's focus onto physical clashes around Lorenzo, he allows the rest of his defensive shape to stay compact against Messi and Neymar. It is a high-risk gamble, but it works as long as nobody gets sent off early."

Still, the defensive scheme carried an inherent vulnerability. Committing three defenders to suffocate one central striker naturally created wide open lanes across the rest of the pitch, and Barcelona's playmakers recognized the openings immediately.

For the next twenty minutes, Barcelona kept passing the ball patiently through the open spaces. Since Atlético was so focused on stopping Lorenzo, Messi found plenty of room in the middle to control the game. On the left side, Neymar went one-on-one against Juanfran almost every time the defender moved inside to help on Lorenzo. The pressure kept growing. In the 18th minute, Neymar forced a quick save from Courtois at the near post. Five minutes after that, Messi curled a shot from outside the box that missed the goal by just a few inches.

Then, completely against the run of play, Atlético broke the deadlock.

The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute, born out of pure ferocity from Diego Costa.

Koke battled for a loose ball in the center circle after Busquets saw an attempted pass clip off Tiago's heel. The midfielder spun quickly and launched a sweeping diagonal ball into the channel between Jordi Alba and Mascherano. Costa was already in full stride. Three weeks of frustration sitting in the treatment room translated into a blistering sprint, allowing the striker to edge past Mascherano by half a yard.

Costa gathered the bouncing pass with a heavy first touch. Puyol sprinted across to provide emergency cover, throwing his veteran frame into the firing line with the same selflessness he had shown for fifteen seasons. Yet Costa arrived with raw momentum and power. He absorbed the veteran captain's shoulder challenge, carved out an angle onto his preferred right foot, and drove a fierce, low strike across Víctor Valdés into the far side netting.

Fweet—!

1-0.

The Vicente Calderón erupted into deafening delirium.

Costa ignored his teammates for the first few seconds, sprinting directly toward the roaring ultras behind the goal. He dropped onto both knees, spreading his arms wide and screaming toward the stands as thousands of red-and-white shirts surged against the barricades in pure ecstasy.

"DIEGO COSTA...!" Santiago shouted into his microphone over the roaring crowd. "He is barely back from injury, and he scores with his very first chance! Atlético takes the lead, and this whole stadium is going crazy!"

Inés added, "That was his first clean touch inside the penalty area all evening. Sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring issue, and he buries his first chance with ruthless confidence. Simeone promised his forward would break through walls tonight, and he just overpowered one of the greatest defenders in Spanish history."

Along the sideline, Simeone marched back and forth with clenched fists, screaming hoarse instructions at his squad to keep pressing rather than celebrate.

Over on the Barcelona bench, Martino remained completely still, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. Pautasso leaned in toward his ear, looking anxious, but Martino raised a calm hand to cut him off before he could speak. "It is only the 29th minute, Jorge. We have plenty of time to turn this around. Just tell the lads to keep their composure and maintain our passing structure."

Meanwhile, on the pitch, Puyol pulled himself up from the grass. He had been beaten by pure physical explosion that his aging joints simply could no longer match, and the quiet frustration showed in the tight set of his jaw. Xavi jogged over, clapping his hands together before resting a reassuring palm on his captain's shoulder. Puyol gave a single nod, pointed firmly toward the center circle, and urged the team to reset.

Lorenzo stood waiting on the center spot for the restart. Godín brushed past him on his way back into defense, muttering a low taunt under his breath. Lorenzo didn't take the bait. He briefly checked the glowing stadium clock, glanced at the 1-0 scoreline, and caught Messi's eye across the halfway line.

Messi met his gaze and gave a subtle, knowing nod.

The overarching tactical plan remained unchanged. Barcelona would continue drawing Atlético's markers onto Lorenzo, creating the space for Messi and Neymar to slice through the flanks until the decisive opening emerged.

Barcelona took the kickoff, and the remainder of the first half turned into a grueling siege.

The visitors controlled seventy percent of possession, yet breaching Atlético's defensive fortress proved brutally difficult. Simeone's men packed themselves into two disciplined banks of four, with Costa and David Villa dropping deep into their own half to form a dense ten-man defensive wall. Godín commanded the air, Miranda threw his body into every passing lane, and Courtois dominated his six-yard box with imposing authority.

Messi had a good shot blocked by a wall of defenders, Neymar's cross was headed away just before Lorenzo could reach it, and Iniesta sent a bouncing shot wide of the post.

Fweet—! Fweet—!

When the referee blew the whistle for halftime, the home fans stood up and cheered loudly, happy to see Atlético go into the break leading 1-0.

Right after the second half started, Barcelona quickly took control of the ball again. In the very first minute, Iniesta played a sharp pass straight to Lorenzo's feet. Three Atlético defenders immediately rushed in to close him down, but before they could hit him, Lorenzo tapped the ball right back to Xavi with one clean touch. Xavi looked up and quickly sent a long pass out to Neymar on the left wing, leaving him one-on-one with Juanfran.

Barcelona was on the attack again. Atlético had scored the first goal, but the fight to win the league was still wide open.
