Chapter 54 - Slipping

The moment Lina caught Susan, the other woman grabbed the edge of the counter to steady herself.

"Are you all right?" Lina asked.

Susan nodded quickly, still startled by how close she had come to falling.

"I'm fine."

"Good. Don't move yet."

Lina waited until Susan had found her balance before letting go. The plate in Susan's hands had tilted badly, but somehow not a single piece of food had fallen.

Susan looked at the plate, then at the wet floor.

"That was close."

"Too close," Lina agreed.

A few feet away, David had also moved when Susan slipped. He had been carrying another plate, and his first instinct had simply been to step forward and make sure she didn't fall.

David was usually quiet in situations like this. He didn't make a fuss or rush into conversations just to be noticed. He simply reacted when something needed to be done.

In the confusion, his hand briefly caught Susan's arm to steady her.

"Careful," he said quietly.

Susan looked up at him.

"I'm fine."
