Chapter 30 - Wake-up Call

The shrill ring of his phone pierced through Kimberly's alcohol-induced slumber. Groggily, he fumbled for the device on his nightstand, his eyes still firmly shut against the intrusion of consciousness.

"'Lo?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep and the remnants of last night's celebration.

"Kim! Finally! I've been trying to reach you for an hour!" Edwin's voice came through, unnaturally chipper and urgent.

Kimberly groaned, burying his face in his pillow. "Ed, it's too early for this. Call me back in a few hours."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Kim, have you checked the time? It's almost noon."

"What?" Kimberly's eyes flew open, squinting against the sunlight streaming through his curtains. He pulled the phone away from his ear to check the screen. 11:47 AM glared back at him. "Shit."

Edwin's chuckle came through the speaker. "I take it you're still feeling last night's celebration?"

"Ugh, don't remind me," Kimberly moaned, slowly sitting up and immediately regretting it as his head began to throb. "Can I just sleep for another hour? Or five?"

"No can do, Kim," Edwin replied, his tone shifting from amusement to something more serious. "I need you at my house as soon as possible. We've got work to do."

Something in Edwin's voice set off alarm bells in Kimberly's foggy mind. The urgency, the underlying tension – it all felt off. "Ed, is everything okay? You sound... different."

There was another pause, longer this time. When Edwin spoke again, his voice was softer, almost vulnerable. "I'm fine, Kim. I just... I need my best friend right now. Can you come?"

Kimberly felt a pang in his chest at the plea in Edwin's voice. His hangover suddenly seemed far less important. "Of course, Ed. I'll be there as soon as I can."

As he hung up, Kimberly couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong. Pushing his concerns aside for the moment, he quickly got dressed, downing a glass of water and some aspirin before heading out.

The drive to Edwin's mansion was a blur, Kimberly's mind racing with possibilities. What could have happened to cause such a drastic change in Edwin's demeanor overnight?

As Kimberly pulled up to the house, he was surprised to see Edwin already waiting outside, pacing back and forth on the front steps. But what truly shocked him was Edwin's appearance – he was fully dressed in a crisp suit, his hair neatly styled, looking ready for a business meeting rather than a casual Saturday with a friend.

"Ed?" Kimberly called out as he approached, concern etched on his face. "What's going on?"

Edwin's face lit up at the sight of his friend, but Kimberly couldn't miss the tension around his eyes, the slightly manic energy radiating from him. "Kim! Great, you're here. We need to go. Now."

Kimberly held up his hands, trying to slow his friend down. "Whoa, hold on. Go where? Ed, what's happened?"

Edwin took a deep breath, running a hand through his perfectly coiffed hair. "We need to go to the agency. We need to talk to Richard Blackwood."

Kimberly's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Richard Blackwood, the man who cut you loose at the first sign of trouble?"

"Yeah, him." Edwin nodded.

"Are you sure that's wise, Ed? Things are just starting to turn around. Maybe we should wait a bit longer?"

Edwin shook his head, his eyes blazing with determination. "No, Kim. We can't afford to wait. Now that we're finally getting on the right track, we need to strike while the iron is hot. We need to persuade Richard to re-sign me."

Kimberly studied his friend's face, noting the tension, the barely contained desperation. Something had clearly happened, something Edwin wasn't telling him. But he knew pushing too hard right now wouldn't help.

"Alright, Ed," Kimberly conceded with a sigh. "If you think this is the right move, I'm with you. But before we go anywhere, we need to eat something. I'm still hungover, and I bet you haven't had anything since last night either."

Edwin opened his mouth to protest, but Kimberly held up a hand. "No arguments. You're not dragging me to face Richard Blackwood on an empty stomach."

For a moment, Edwin looked like he might argue, but then his shoulders slumped slightly, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Fine, you win. But make it quick."

Kimberly grinned triumphantly and headed towards the kitchen, with Edwin trailing behind. As they entered the spacious, modern kitchen with its gleaming stainless steel appliances and marble countertops, Kimberly made a beeline for the refrigerator.

Opening it, he was pleasantly surprised to find it fully stocked with fresh produce, eggs, milk, and various other essentials. "Wow, Ed. When did you have time to go grocery shopping?"

Edwin leaned against the kitchen island, a fond smile on his face. "I didn't. Mrs. Gonzalez, my housekeeper, did a grocery run for me. She thought I might need it when I came back."

Kimberly chuckled as he started pulling out ingredients. "That was thoughtful of her. Though I have to say, it seems a bit wasted on you, Mr. I-Can't-Boil-An-Egg."

Edwin mock-glared at his friend. "Hey, I resent that. I can... microwave things."

Both men burst into laughter, the sound filling the kitchen and easing some of the tension that had built up over the morning.

As Kimberly moved around the kitchen with practiced ease, cracking eggs into a bowl and dicing vegetables, Edwin watched him with a mixture of admiration and gratitude. "You know," Edwin said softly, "I don't know what I'd do without you, Kim. You're not just my assistant and best friend. You're like my lifeline when it comes to food. You're a world-class chef!"

Kimberly glanced up from the pan where he was now sautéing the vegetables. "Flattery will get you everywhere, Mr. Kasper," he said with a wink. "But seriously, Ed, that's what friends are for. I've got your back, always."

The kitchen soon filled with the mouthwatering aroma of a gourmet breakfast. Kimberly had whipped up a vegetable and cheese omelet, crispy bacon, and whole grain toast. He'd even managed to find some fresh berries in the fridge to add a pop of color to the plates.

As they sat at the kitchen island, digging into their meal, the conversation flowed easily between them. For a moment, it was almost possible to forget the tumultuous events of the past weeks and the challenges that still lay ahead.

Edwin savored a bite of the omelet, closing his eyes in appreciation. "Kim, I swear, if this acting thing doesn't work out for me, I'm hiring you as my personal chef."

Kimberly laughed, reaching for his glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. "Don't get any ideas. I'm quite happy being your assistant and occasional cook."

As they finished their breakfast, Edwin felt a renewed sense of purpose. The good food and easy companionship had lifted his spirits, pushing back the dark thoughts that had plagued him through the night.

Picking up their plates and loading them into the dishwasher, Edwin turned to Kimberly. "Thanks for insisting on breakfast. I needed that more than I realized."

Kimberly nodded, his eyes searching Edwin's face. "That's what I'm here for, Ed. Now, are you sure you're ready for this meeting with Richard?"

Edwin took a deep breath, squaring his shoulders. "As ready as I'll ever be. Let's go face the music."

As they left the kitchen and headed towards the front door, Edwin was gripped with anticipation and anxiety. The meeting with Richard Blackwood could potentially make or break his comeback. But with Kimberly by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

The morning sun was bright as they stepped outside, a new day full of possibilities stretching before them. Whatever the outcome of their meeting, Edwin knew one thing for certain – with friends like Kimberly in his corner, he could weather any storm.
