Chapter 36 - Liquid courage

As they stepped into the club, the pulsing lights and thunderous music enveloped them. Despite his earlier promise to behave, Edwin made a beeline for the bar, ordering a double shot of whiskey. Lance watched with growing concern as Edwin knocked back drink after drink, his movements becoming increasingly unsteady.

"Laura," Edwin mumbled, his voice barely audible over the music. "It's really over, isn't it?" He raised his glass in a mock toast before downing its contents.

Lance was about to intervene when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to see Devin grinning widely.

Lance's eyes widened in surprise. "Dev? What are you doing here?"

Devin's grin faltered slightly. "This is a club, remember? So if I didn't bump into you here, I wouldn't know that you came to the club without me. Too caught up with your celebrity crush, I see." He nodded towards Edwin, who was now swaying dangerously on his barstool.

Lance winced, guilt washing over him. "I'm sorry, Dev. I didn't even intend to come here tonight. Edwin wanted to come, and I'm just here to keep an eye on him."

Devin raised an eyebrow. "Right. And when are you going to stop hiding your feelings for him? You've been denying it for too long, Lance."

Lance froze, his eyes darting around to make sure no one had overheard. "What are you talking about?" he hissed.

Devin's expression turned serious. "Come on, Lance. I've known you were into guys for years. Your fake relationships with different women, the way you pretend to be a womanizer... I've always seen through it."

Lance's shoulders sagged in defeat. "How did you figure it out?"

"We're best friends, aren't we? I notice things. Plus, you're not as subtle as you think when you check out guys," Devin chuckled.

"I guess I can't hide it anymore from you," Lance sighed.

"It was never hidden from me because I have always seen through you!" Devin said, grinning. Then, as if something crossed his mind, he added, "This is the first time I've seen you genuinely interested in someone. Are you really going to let fear hold you back?"

Lance shook his head vehemently. "I can't tell him, Dev. Edwin's not gay. It could ruin our friendship."

"I know you don't care about that friendship you're pretending to treasure," Devin chuckled. "What happened to the audacious playboy in you?" He added with a smirk.

"This is different, Devin," Lance countered. "We are talking about a straight man here, and don't forget that I'm still afraid of letting this secret out."

A mischievous glint appeared in Devin's eyes. "Want to make a bet? If you go tell him how you feel, I'll give you the code to the safe in my room."

Lance's eyes widened. "The safe? But that's where you keep..." He trailed off, suddenly remembering something important he'd been trying to collect from Devin for years.

Devin nodded, grinning. "Exactly. So, what do you say?"

Lance glanced over at Edwin, who had abandoned his seat at the bar and was now dancing wildly, his movements uncoordinated and sloppy. "He won't even remember this in the morning, Dev. He's completely wasted."

"All the more reason to take a chance," Devin urged. "Come on, Lance. It's time to be honest with yourself and with him."

Lance hesitated for a moment longer, his eyes fixed on Edwin's swaying form. Then, with a deep breath, he stood up. "Fine. But if this goes badly, I'm blaming you."

Devin's grin widened. "That's my boy. Go get him, tiger."

With determination in his stride, Lance made his way through the crowded dance floor towards Edwin. His heart was pounding, his palms sweaty as he approached the man who had unknowingly captured his heart.

"Edwin," Lance called out, reaching for his arm.

Edwin spun around, nearly losing his balance. His face lit up when he saw Lance. "Lance! My hero!" he slurred, throwing his arms around Lance's neck.

Lance steadied him, trying to control his erratic heart. He could feel their closeness messing with his senses. "Ed, I want to tell you something," he said, his voice barely audible over the thumping bass.

Edwin leaned in closer, his breath hot against Lance's ear. "What? I can't hear you!"

Lance took a deep breath, steeling himself. It was now or never. He cupped Edwin's face with one hand, forcing the drunk man to focus on him.

"Edwin, I need to tell you something important," Lance said, his heart pounding. "I... I have feelings for you. Romantic feelings. I think I'm falling in love with you."

Edwin's glazed eyes widened, a look of confusion crossing his face. "You... what?" he slurred, struggling to process Lance's words through his alcohol-induced haze.

Fueled by his longtime wish to make his feelings for the other man known, Lance unknowingly poured all his sincerity into the bet-driven confession as his grip on Edwin tightened slightly, his gray eyes intense as they bore into Edwin's green ones. "I love you, Edwin. I have for a while now. I know this isn't the best time, but I needed you to know."

For a moment, Edwin just stared at Lance, his mouth slightly open as if he were about to speak. But before he could form a response, his eyes rolled back, and he slumped forward, unconscious in Lance's arms.

Lance stood there, frozen in shock, holding the passed-out Edwin as the club continued to pulse around them. From across the room, he could see Devin giving him a thumbs up, unaware of what had just transpired.

As Lance hoisted Edwin up, preparing to carry him out of the club, his mind raced. He had done it. He had finally confessed his feelings. But Edwin had passed out before he could respond. Did he hear? Would he remember in the morning? And if he did, how would he react?

With Edwin's dead weight in his arms and the echo of his confession ringing in his ears, Lance made his way towards the exit, leaving behind the pounding music and flashing lights. The night had taken yet another unexpected turn, and Lance had a feeling that come morning, everything would change. For better or worse, only time would tell.

As he stepped out into the cool night air, Lance couldn't help but wonder: had he just made the bravest decision of his life, or the biggest mistake?
