Chapter 32 - Whispers in the Dark

Lance stood outside Edwin's bedroom door, his hand poised to knock. The silence from within was deafening. After several attempts with no response, he took a deep breath and gently turned the doorknob, pushing the door open.

The sight that greeted him made his heart constrict painfully. Edwin sat curled up on the bed, a nearly empty bottle of whiskey clutched in his hand like a lifeline. The room was dimly lit, shadows dancing on the walls, mirroring the darkness that seemed to have enveloped his spirit.

Lance felt an overwhelming urge to rush to Edwin's side, to gather him in his arms and promise that everything would be alright. But he knew that wasn't what Edwin needed right now. Instead, he quietly made his way to the plush armchair in the corner of the room, sinking into it as he prepared to be the silent listener Edwin desperately needed.

From his position, Lance could see every minute detail of Edwin's defeated posture. The way his fingers curled tightly around the whiskey bottle, the slight tremor in his shoulders, the mess of his usually perfectly styled hair. Each observation sent a pang through his heart, but he forced himself to remain still. Sitting quietly while he watched the actor also made his heart gladden with unbound joy, even though the family business he had gone to take care of had taken longer than expected, the thought of Edwin had kept him happy and stress-free.

For a long while, the only sound in the room was the occasional clink of the bottle against Edwin's teeth as he took another swig. Then, as if a dam had broken, words began to spill from his lips, slurred and bitter.

"It's all gone to shit, Lance," Edwin mumbled, his voice rough with emotion and alcohol. "Everything I've worked for, everything I've built... it's all crumbling around me."

Lance remained silent, his eyes fixed on Edwin's prone form, absorbing every word.

"Laura's gone," Edwin continued, a humorless laugh escaping him. "Not just gone, but with Mike fucking Donnelly. Can you believe it? My co-star. The guy I've had to pretend to be best friends with on screen for years. And now he's got her."

Edwin took another long pull from the bottle before continuing. "And my father... my own fucking father orchestrated this whole mess. He wanted to teach me a lesson, to bring me down a peg. Well, congratulations, Dad. Mission fucking accomplished."

Lance felt his fists clench involuntarily at the mention of Edwin's father, but he forced himself to relax, to maintain his role as the silent listener.

"The agency won't take me back," Edwin spat out, his voice filled with bitterness. "Blackwood talks about patience and strategy, but I can see it in his eyes. He's done with me. They all are. Years of making them millions, and this is how they repay me. One scandal and I'm thrown to the wolves."

Edwin's voice broke as he continued, "And the lawsuits... God, the lawsuits. Some of the brands have dropped their suits, sure. But the ones that haven't? They're out for blood. They want compensation, as if I haven't lost enough already. I'm hemorrhaging money, Lance. At this rate, I'll be broke before the year is out."

Lance watched as Edwin struggled to sit up, swaying slightly as he took another drink. "My career is in shambles. My personal life is a joke. I'm practically going broke. Tell me, Lance, what the hell am I supposed to do now? How do I come back from this?"

Edwin's eyes, bloodshot and filled with unshed tears, finally met Lance's. The raw pain and vulnerability in them made Lance's breath catch in his throat.

"I've lost everything, Lance," Edwin whispered, his voice barely audible. "My career, my love, my reputation... it's all gone. And I don't know if I have the strength to rebuild it all again."

As Edwin's words trailed off into silence, Lance found himself at a loss. He wanted nothing more than to cross the room, to take Edwin in his arms and promise him that everything would be okay. But he knew that such empty platitudes would ring hollow in the face of Edwin's very real and devastating losses.

Instead, Lance remained in his seat, his presence a silent testament to his unwavering support.

As Edwin continued his rant, his eyes suddenly focused on Lance, as if truly seeing him for the first time since he entered the room. With a determined, if unsteady, movement, Edwin pushed himself off the bed and stumbled towards Lance.

Lance tensed, ready to spring into action if needed. His caution proved warranted as Edwin's foot caught on his own leg, sending him lurching forward. In an instant, Lance was there, strong arms catching Edwin before he could fall.

Their eyes locked, and Lance felt his breath catch in his throat. Edwin's gaze, though clouded with alcohol, seemed to burn with an intensity that made Lance's heart race. As if drawn by an invisible force, Lance found himself lost in those green eyes, acutely aware of every point of contact between their bodies.

Then, to Lance's shock and secret delight, Edwin's gaze dropped to his lips. The air between them seemed to crackle with electricity. Lance felt his pulse quicken, his mind spinning with a mixture of hope and disbelief. Were they really about to...?

Almost involuntarily, they began to lean towards each other. Lance's heart pounded in his ears, his lips tingling with anticipation. He could feel the warmth of Edwin's breath, smell the whiskey mixed with Edwin's familiar cologne. Every fiber of his being yearned to close the distance, to finally taste the lips he'd dreamed of for so long.

But just as their lips were about to meet, something flickered in Edwin's eyes. A moment of clarity, perhaps, or a sudden memory. Edwin pulled back slightly, his brow furrowing in confusion.

"Where have you been, Lance?" he asked, his voice fused with accusation and genuine curiosity. "You disappeared for so long."

The spell broken, Lance helped Edwin back to the bed, trying to ignore the ache in his chest. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to focus on Edwin's question rather than the lingering warmth where their bodies had touched.

"I'm sorry, Ed," Lance replied, his voice carefully controlled. "The family business I had to oversee... it dragged on longer than I expected. There were some complications that required my presence."

Edwin nodded, seemingly satisfied with the explanation, before launching back into his tirade about the agency and Laura. His words became increasingly heated, his gestures more animated as the alcohol loosened his inhibitions.

Lance settled back into his chair, his mind reeling from what had almost happened. He watched Edwin, noting the flush on his cheeks, the slightly unfocused look in his eyes. With a pang of bitter realization, he reminded himself that Edwin was drunk. Whatever had just transpired – or almost transpired – was likely nothing more than alcohol-induced impulse.

Pushing aside his own turbulent emotions, Lance forced himself to focus on being there for his friend. He listened attentively as Edwin continued to rant, offering support where he could. All the while, he kept his own feelings carefully hidden, a bittersweet secret locked away in his heart.

Watching Edwin's growing agitation, Lance felt compelled to intervene. "Ed," he said softly, leaning forward, "Who exactly are you most angry at right now? Is it the agency for refusing to take you back? Your father for orchestrating this mess? Or Laura for leaving?"

Edwin paused, the question seeming to catch him off guard. He took a long swig from the bottle before sighing deeply. "I thought I was strong enough, you know?" he said, his voice suddenly quiet and vulnerable. "I thought I could move on, that I could handle all of this. But the more I think about Laura, the more it hurts. It's like a knife twisting in my gut every time I remember she's with Mike now."

Lance felt his heart constrict at Edwin's words. The pain in Edwin's voice was profound, and it took every ounce of Lance's self-control not to reveal how much it affected him. He had to force himself to push aside his own feelings.

"Ed," Lance said gently, "have you considered talking to Laura? Maybe having a candid conversation about everything could help. It might give you some closure, help you move on."

Edwin shook his head vehemently, nearly spilling the whiskey. "No, I can't. I can't face her, Lance. Not now, not like this."

Lance nodded, understanding Edwin's reluctance. "Okay. You don't have to do anything you're not ready for. But remember, avoiding the issue won't make it go away."

Edwin slumped back against the headboard, looking utterly defeated. "I know," he mumbled. "I just... I don't know how to deal with any of this. Everything's falling apart, and I feel like I'm drowning."

Lance stood up, moving closer to the bed but still maintaining a respectful distance. "You're not alone in this, Ed. I'm here, Kimberly's here. We'll figure this out together, okay?"

Edwin looked up at Lance, his eyes glossy with unshed tears and alcohol. "Why are you still here, Lance? After everything that's happened, why do you stick around?"

Lance felt his heart race at the question. For a moment, he was tempted to reveal everything - his feelings, his devotion, his unwavering support. But he knew this wasn't the right time. Edwin was vulnerable, hurting, and not in a state to process such a revelation.

Instead, Lance smiled softly. "Because that's what friends do, right? We stand by each other, no matter what. And I'm not going anywhere."

Edwin nodded, a ghost of a smile flickering across his face. "Thank you," he whispered.

As the night wore on, Lance remained by Edwin's side, listening to his fears, his anger, and his sorrow. He offered comfort where he could, and simply listened when that was all Edwin needed. And all the while, Lance's own feelings remained unspoken, a secret he held close to his heart as he watched over the man he cared for so deeply.
