The four friends hurried out of Lance's apartment, determination and apprehension on their faces. As they approached Kimberly's house, they spotted a sleek black car parked outside. Standing next to it was Agatha, Edwin's father's assistant, flanked by two imposing men in black suits.
Agatha, a woman in her late thirties, exuded an air of authority. Her ash-blonde hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and her steel-gray eyes were sharp behind her rimless glasses. She wore a crisp white blouse under a tailored charcoal blazer, paired with a matching pencil skirt. Her black stilettos clicked against the pavement as she stepped forward, her expression painted with relief and irritation.
As Agatha approached the group, her eyes swept over them, landing on Lance. For a brief moment, her professional demeanor cracked, her eyes widening in shock and her lips parting slightly. Lance Castellan, the famous footballer she'd admired from afar, was standing right in front of her.
Agatha's hands twitched at her sides, as if fighting the urge to reach for her phone for a picture. Her breath caught in her throat, and for a split second, she was just another starstruck fan.
However, years of professional training kicked in, and Agatha quickly schooled her features back into their usual stern expression. She straightened her blazer, cleared her throat, and addressed Edwin as if nothing had happened.
"Mr. Edwin," she called out, her voice carrying only a hint of its earlier exasperation. "I'm glad I've finally found you. Your father is waiting."
Lance, having noticed Agatha's momentary lapse, raised an eyebrow and shared a knowing look with Devin. Devin smirked back, clearly amused by the secretary's attempt to maintain her composure.
Edwin's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with suspicion. "What does my father want?" he asked gruffly, his voice tinged with wariness.
Agatha hesitated before speaking, her eyes darting briefly to Lance before focusing back on Edwin. "Mr. Edwin, your father requests your presence at the family estate. He wants to discuss your future."
Edwin snorted, his anger and frustration boiling over. "My future? Ha! He wants to control my future, just like he's always tried to."
As the conversation progressed, Agatha's eyes kept darting to Lance, her professional mask slipping just slightly each time. Lance, for his part, maintained a neutral expression, but there was a glint of amusement in his gray eyes.
Agatha's expression turned sympathetic, though her composure seemed slightly less assured than before. "Mr. Edwin, please. Your father only wants what's best for you. He's worried about your well-being, and he thinks it's time for you to leave the acting world behind and take your rightful place in the family business."
Edwin's eyes rolled in disgust. "The family business? You mean the soul-sucking, creativity-crushing empire he's built? No thanks. I'd rather die than give up my passion for his profit margins."
Agatha's face turned stern, though her gaze flickered uncertainly between Edwin and Lance. "Mr. Edwin, please reconsider. Your father is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure your success and happiness."
Edwin's laughter was bitter. "Success and happiness? You mean his version of it? No, thank you. I'll pass."
Agatha's expression hardened, her eyes locked on Edwin's, though she seemed to be drawing strength from her professional persona. "Mr. Edwin, I'm afraid it's not a request. Your father has insisted that you come with me now. He's waiting for you at the estate."
At this point, Lance stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Edwin. His gray eyes flashed with determination, and Agatha visibly swallowed, her composure slipping again. "I'm sorry, but Edwin isn't going anywhere he doesn't want to go."
Devin nodded, moving to stand beside Lance. "That's right. Edwin's a grown man capable of making his own decisions."
Kimberly joined them, his usually cheerful face set in a rare frown. "As Edwin's personal assistant and friend, I can assure you that he has prior commitments that cannot be rescheduled."
Agatha's eyes widened slightly at the unexpected resistance. She glanced at the two men flanking her, who shifted uneasily but didn't move. Her gaze kept returning to Lance, as if she couldn't quite believe he was there and opposing her.
Edwin, emboldened by his friends' support and noticing Agatha's discomfort, straightened his posture. "Agatha, I appreciate you coming all this way, but I'm not going with you. Tell my father I'll stop by later when I'm ready to talk."
Agatha's eyes narrowed slightly, her expression skeptical, but her usual confidence seemed shaken. "Mr. Edwin, I'm afraid I can't leave without you. Your father was very clear in his instructions."
Edwin sighed, his mind racing with excuses. "Look, I promise I'll come later, okay? I just need some time to...to get my head straight."
Agatha hesitated, her gaze searching his face, then flicking to Lance once more. After a moment, she nodded curtly. "Very well, Mr. Edwin. I'll leave you for now. But you must promise to come to the estate later today. Your father is waiting."
Edwin nodded, his relief palpable. "I promise. I'll be there."
Agatha's eyes lingered on him for a moment before she turned to leave. As she walked away, she couldn't resist glancing back at Lance one last time, awe and frustration visible in her eyes. Her bodyguards followed closely behind, looking slightly confused by the entire exchange.
As the black car pulled away, Devin burst into laughter. "Did you see that? I thought she was going to faint when she saw you, Lance!"
Lance chuckled, shaking his head. "I've never seen someone try so hard to pretend they weren't star-struck. It was kind of impressive, actually."
Kimberly grinned. "Oh my, I've never seen Agatha so off-balance. Who knew the indomitable secretary was a closet football fan?"
Edwin, despite the tension of the encounter, found himself smiling. "Well, Lance, it seems your star power might come in handy if we have to deal with my father's people again."
As the group was about to head back inside, Lance's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen.
"It's Edith," he said, a hint of surprise in his voice. He answered the call, listening intently for a moment before his eyes widened. "The meeting! I completely forgot. Thanks for the reminder, Edith. I'll be there soon."
Lance ended the call and turned to the others, an apologetic look on his face. "I'm sorry, guys, but I've got to go. I have a meeting with the team management at 1 pm, and it's almost time."
Edwin nodded, understanding but unable to hide a flicker of disappointment in his eyes. "Of course, Lance. You've already done so much for me. I can't thank you enough."
Lance stepped closer to Edwin, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, this isn't goodbye, okay? Call me if you need anything, anytime. I mean it."
Edwin managed a small smile. "I will. Thanks again, Lance. For everything."
Devin clapped his hands together. "Well, I guess that's my cue to leave too. Can't let Lance face the big, bad management alone, can we?"
Lance rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "You just want to flirt with Edith again."
"Guilty as charged," Devin grinned unabashedly.
As Lance and Devin prepared to leave, Kimberly stepped forward. "I'll make sure Edwin gets some rest and is prepared for his meeting with his father later."
Lance nodded gratefully. "Thanks, Kim. Edwin, remember what we talked about. You're stronger than you think."
Edwin straightened his shoulders, a new resolve in his eyes. "I'll remember. Good luck with your meeting, Lance."
With final waves and goodbyes, Lance and Devin headed off, leaving Edwin and Kimberly standing in front of the house. As they watched their friends' car disappear around the corner, Edwin felt different emotions washing over him – gratitude for the support he'd received, nervousness about the impending confrontation with his father, and a strange, warm feeling he couldn't quite name when he thought about Lance.
Kimberly gently nudged Edwin's shoulder. "Come on, superstar. Let's get you inside and figure out our game plan for dealing with your father."
Edwin nodded, taking a deep breath. As they walked into the house, he realized that for the first time in a long while, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. With friends like these by his side, he was beginning to believe that anything was possible.
