Edwin burst through the front door of Kimberly's house, his rage palpable. He stormed into the living room, his usually impeccable appearance disheveled, eyes wild with fury and betrayal.
"That bastard!" Edwin roared, slamming his fist against the wall. "My own father!"
Kimberly rushed in, his blue eyes wide with concern. "Edwin, what happened?"
Edwin collapsed onto the couch, his anger suddenly giving way to a bone-deep weariness. "He did it, Kim. My father orchestrated this whole nightmare. He admitted it, in his own twisted way."
Kimberly sat beside his friend, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "God, Edwin. I'm so sorry."
"I can't believe that my own father would go as far as framing me. It's obvious he wants to kill my career finally. What have I done to him? Can't he just allow me to live my life and stop trying to control it?"
Kimberly was silent as he listened to his friend's rantings with a heavy heart.
"Kim, ever since my mom died, I have always felt alone. My only source of happiness while chasing my dream was that she supported me wholeheartedly while she was alive. Is that why I'm also showing her anger traits? Because sometimes I feel like I did do that to that lady."
"Ed, stop it. You're different from your mother," Kimberly said.
"What if I did it, Kim? I mean, that's what my father wanted when he did whatever he did to me."
"I know you very well, Edwin. And why haven't you hurt me if you're that temperamental and destructive?" Kimberly asked.
"I don't know what to believe anymore, Kim," Edwin admitted with a sigh. "And now, the other person that supported me through thick and thin has decided to abandon me. Why would Laura not trust me, even for once?"
Edwin pulled out his phone, his fingers trembling as he scrolled through photos. He paused on one of him and Laura, their smiles radiant, her sapphire eyes sparkling with joy. "I need her, Kim," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I've never needed anyone more than I need her right now."
With shaking hands, Edwin dialed Laura's number. The phone rang, once, twice, three times. Each unanswered ring felt like a knife twisting in his heart. Finally, her voicemail picked up. Edwin ended the call without leaving a message, letting the phone slip from his grasp onto the couch.
"She's still ignoring me," he murmured, defeat etched in every line of his face. "What do I do? How can I make her understand and forgive me?"
Kimberly's heart ached for his friend. He took a deep breath, knowing it was time to share something he'd kept close to his heart for years.
"Edwin," he began softly, "do you remember the day we met? Really met, I mean. Not on set, but... that night."
Edwin looked up, a flicker of recognition in his eyes. "Of course. How could I forget?"
Kimberly nodded, his wine-colored hair falling across his forehead. "I've never told you the whole story. That night... it wasn't just a random act of kindness on your part. You saved my life."
Edwin sat up straighter, his attention fully on Kimberly now.
"In high school, I realized I was gay," Kimberly continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "When my father found out, he... he lost it. The abuse had been building for years, but that night, I thought he was going to kill me."
Edwin's eyes widened in horror. "Kim, I had no idea..."
Kimberly gave a sad smile. "You showed up at just the right moment. You didn't just save me from his wrath that night, Edwin. You gave me a future. You showed me that I deserved better, that I could be more than what my father tried to make me."
Tears welled up in Edwin's eyes as the full weight of Kimberly's words sank in.
"I promised myself that day that I would always stand by you," Kimberly said, his voice growing stronger. "No matter what. And I'm keeping that promise now. We're going to get through this, Edwin. Together."
For the first time in days, a genuine smile crossed Edwin's face. He pulled Kimberly into a tight hug. "Thank you, Kim," he whispered. "I was caught up in my self-pity that I forgot about the most supportive person by my side."
As they pulled apart, Kimberly stood up, a determined glint in his eye. "Now, we're going to forget about everything else and have a very sumptuous dinner. How about that?"
"Sounds like the most amazing idea I could think of," Edwin said, nodding in agreement.
While Kimberly busied himself in the kitchen, Edwin felt a small spark of hope ignite in his chest. He wasn't alone. He had Kimberly, unwavering in his support. And he had others too...
As savory aromas wafted from the kitchen, Edwin's curiosity was piqued. "Kim, what are you cooking in there? It smells amazing."
Kimberly's voice carried a hint of pride as he replied, "Just wait and see. I'm pulling out all the stops tonight."
A few minutes later, Kimberly emerged from the kitchen, carefully balancing two plates and a bottle of wine. He set them down on the coffee table with a flourish.
"Voila! Herb-crusted rack of lamb with rosemary roasted potatoes and honey-glazed carrots," Kimberly announced. "And for dessert, I've got a dark chocolate mousse chilling in the fridge."
Edwin's eyes widened in appreciation. "Kim, this looks incredible. You didn't have to go to all this trouble."
Kimberly waved off the comment as he poured two glasses of deep red wine. "This is a 2015 Château Margaux I've been saving for a special occasion," he explained. "And celebrating our friendship? That's pretty special to me."
As they dug into the meal, Edwin couldn't help but let out a satisfied groan. "This lamb is perfectly cooked, Kim. When did you become such a gourmet chef?"
Kimberly grinned, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "I may have been taking some online cooking classes in my spare time. Figured it might come in handy for impressing important people."
Edwin raised an eyebrow. "Important people, huh? Anyone I should know about?"
Kimberly laughed, shaking his head. "No, no. Just a general skill to have. Though right now, I'm glad I can use it to cheer up my best friend."
As they continued to eat and drink, the conversation flowed more easily. They reminisced about old times, shared funny stories from movie sets, and for a while, the weight of Edwin's troubles seemed to lift.
Edwin found himself laughing at Kimberly's terrible impression of their old drama coach. "God, Kim, that's awful! He didn't sound anything like that!"
Kimberly feigned offense. "I'll have you know my impressions are top-notch, Mr. Hollywood Star. You're just jealous of my raw talent."
Their laughter filled the room, a stark contrast to the somber mood of earlier. As Edwin took another sip of the exquisite wine, he felt a warmth that had nothing to do with alcohol. It was the warmth of friendship, of knowing that despite everything, he wasn't alone.
For those few hours, as they shared good food, wine, and memories, Edwin almost forgot about the scandals, the betrayals, and the uncertain future. In that moment, he was simply a man enjoying dinner with his best friend, and it felt like maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.
