Chapter 19 - Revelations

Detective Maria Reyes sat at her cluttered desk, surrounded by stacks of files and the constant hum of the precinct. She rubbed her temples, trying to ward off the headache that threatened to overtake her. The Kasper case was already shaping up to be a media circus, and she knew the pressure would only intensify.

She reached for the case file, flipping it open to reveal Edwin Kasper's headshot. The actor's green eyes stared back at her, his million-dollar smile betraying no hint of the turmoil that now engulfed his life.

"Alright, Mr. Kasper," she muttered. "Let's see what skeletons are hiding in your closet."

Reyes began by reviewing the initial report. A woman, identified as Samantha Torres, 28, had been found in Kasper's hotel room, bruised and bloodied. Her statement claimed Kasper had assaulted her, but the details were fuzzy – likely due to the alcohol and possibly drugs in her system. Kasper, for his part, claimed to have no memory of the night's events.

"Classic he-said-she-said," Reyes sighed. She knew she needed more. It was time to dig deeper.

Her first stop was the film set where Kasper had been working before the incident. The production had been shut down in the wake of the scandal, but crew members were still milling about, packing up equipment.

Reyes approached a group of stagehands, flashing her badge. "Detective Reyes. I'm investigating the Edwin Kasper case. Mind if I ask you a few questions?"

The stagehands exchanged nervous glances before one of them, a burly man with a salt-and-pepper beard, stepped forward. "I'm Owen, head of the grip department. What do you want to know?"

"What was Kasper like on set? Any conflicts, tensions?"

Owen shrugged. "Kasper was... intense. Took his role real serious. Sometimes he'd get into arguments with the director, but nothing too out of the ordinary for a big star."

Reyes nodded, jotting down notes. "Anyone in particular he didn't get along with?"

Another stagehand, a younger woman with bright blue hair, piped up. "Well, there was always tension between him and Mike Donnelly. They play rivals in the movie, and sometimes it seemed like that rivalry carried over off-screen."

"Tell me more about that," Reyes prompted.

The woman, who introduced herself as Zoe, continued. "They'd bicker over scene interpretations, try to one-up each other. There was this one time, during a fight scene, Mike claimed Edwin hit him for real. It got pretty heated."

Reyes made a mental note to follow up with Donnelly. "Anything else? Any interactions with women on set that seemed... inappropriate?"

The crew members exchanged glances again. Owen cleared his throat. "Look, we don't want to spread gossip..."

"I'm not asking for gossip," Reyes said firmly. "I'm conducting a criminal investigation. If you know something, I need to hear it."

Zoe sighed. "There were... rumors. About Edwin and his co-star, Vanessa Lee. People said they were getting a little too close, if you know what I mean. But Edwin was engaged, so most of us tried not to pay attention to that kind of talk."

Reyes nodded, adding Vanessa Lee's name to her list of people to interview. She thanked the crew and headed back to her car, her mind already piecing together a complex picture of Edwin Kasper's professional life.

Her next stop was more personal.

Laura Chen, Edwin's ex-fiancée, had agreed to meet her at an exclusive rooftop restaurant overlooking the city. As Reyes stepped out of the elevator onto the 40th floor, she spotted Laura immediately.

Laura was a vision of Hollywood glamour, even in this private setting. Her chestnut hair cascaded in perfect waves over her shoulders, catching the late afternoon sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Her sapphire eyes, known for captivating audiences on the silver screen, now held a mix of wariness and distress.

Dressed in a tailored white pantsuit that accentuated her slender frame, Laura exuded an aura of elegance and poise. Yet, there was a tenseness in her shoulders, a slight furrow in her brow that betrayed her inner turmoil. As one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, Laura was used to being in the spotlight, but this meeting was clearly outside her comfort zone.

The maître d' led Reyes to Laura's table, secluded in a corner with a breathtaking view of the city skyline. Despite the upscale surroundings and the actress's picture-perfect appearance, there was no mistaking the cloud of anxiety that hung over her.

"Ms. Chen? I'm Detective Reyes. Thank you for meeting with me."

Laura nodded, gesturing for Reyes to sit. "I'll tell you whatever I can, Detective. I just... I still can't believe this is happening."

Reyes pulled out her notepad, her dark eyes never leaving Laura's face. "I understand this must be difficult. Can you tell me about your relationship with Edwin? When did you start to notice problems?"

Laura's eyes welled with tears. "Edwin was... is... a complex person. When things were good, they were amazing. He could be so loving, so attentive. But when he was stressed or things weren't going his way, he'd become a different person."

"Different how?" Reyes probed gently.

"He'd get angry, lash out verbally. He never hit me," Laura added quickly, seeing the look on Reyes's face. "But sometimes... sometimes I was afraid he might."

Reyes leaned forward, her short dark hair framing her intense expression. "Can you give me a specific example?"

Laura closed her eyes, as if reliving a painful memory. "There was one night, about six months ago. Edwin had been drinking – he'd been doing that more and more lately. We got into an argument about his lifestyle, how he's never really paying attention to me and always clubbing. It's as if he wasn't taking our relationship seriously and even my friends and family noticed this. He... he threw a glass against the wall. It shattered everywhere. The look in his eyes... I'd never seen him like that before."

Reyes jotted down notes furiously. "Did you ever feel like you were in danger?"

Laura hesitated, a strand of hair falling across her face. She tucked it behind her ear with a practiced motion. "Not... not physically. But emotionally? Yes. Edwin could be manipulative when he wanted to be. He'd make me feel like I was crazy for being upset, like everything was my fault. It was exhausting."

"Why did you stay with him?"

A sad smile crossed Laura's face, her sapphire eyes clouding with emotion. "Because I loved him. And I thought I could help him. That if I just loved him enough, supported him enough, he'd get better. But after this... I can't do it anymore."

Reyes nodded sympathetically. "I understand. Just a couple more questions. Did Edwin ever mention Samantha Torres to you?"

Laura shook her head, her chestnut hair swaying gently. "No, never. I'd never even heard her name until... until all this happened."

"And what about Vanessa Lee? His co-star?"

At this, Laura's expression hardened, her sapphire eyes flashing. "What about her?"

Reyes watched Laura's reaction carefully. "Were you aware of any... closeness between them?"

Laura's laugh was bitter. "Was I aware? Detective, everyone was aware. Edwin swore nothing was happening, that they were just friends, but... I'm not blind. Or stupid."

As the interview concluded, Reyes thanked Laura for her time and headed back to the precinct. Her head was spinning with all the new information. Edwin Kasper was emerging as a man of contradictions – charming and volatile, loving and potentially violent.

Back at her desk, Reyes began to compile her notes, her dark eyes scanning the information. She had a lot more digging to do. Mike Donnelly and Vanessa Lee were now at the top of her list to interview. And she needed to dive deeper into Samantha Torres's background, see if there were any previous connections to Kasper that they'd missed.

As she worked, Reyes couldn't shake the feeling that this case was far more complex than it initially appeared. Edwin Kasper might be guilty, or he might be innocent – but either way, she was certain that there was much more to this story than met the eye.

She picked up her phone, her short dark hair falling across her forehead as she leaned in. "Hey, Johnson. We've got a lot of work to do. Meet me here in 20. We're going to need a bigger board."

As she hung up, Reyes looked at the photos spread across her desk – Edwin, Laura with her striking chestnut hair and sapphire eyes, Samantha, the movie set. Somewhere in this tangle of relationships and rivalries lay the truth. And Detective Maria Reyes was determined to uncover it, no matter where it led.
