The next few days passed with Yuan Si locked in a battle of wits with the old lady.
The very next day, Yuan Si had Xiao Furen take a sample of the herbal medicine to another doctor to see if there was anything wrong with it. She cherished her life and was always worried it might kill her.
Xiao Furen came back that evening and told her she could drink it without worry. There was nothing wrong with the medicine; it was mainly for conditioning the body. It was a bit bitter, he admitted, but the prevailing wisdom was that good medicine is bitter. Therefore, if you wanted to cure an illness, the bitterer, the better.
Hearing Xiao Furen say this, Yuan Si was relieved.
Although she knew the medicine was useless for her 'illness', she still argued and bickered with the old lady every day just to put her mind at ease. Only when she had provoked the old lady to the point of exploding did she obediently drink it down.
