Chapter 49 - Chapter 49:Snake bites and dragons burn

The battlefield was already dying around us.

Cratered earth. Trees reduced to burning skeletons. The air so thick with heat and killing intent it felt like breathing molten glass. I stood in the center of it all, full dragon hybrid form locked in place, scales of blackened crimson covering every inch of me, horns curved and sharp, tail lashing hard enough to split stone. My breath came heavy, but my eyes never left the pale figure across from me.

Behind me the seal holding Dreadbringer finally began to fail.

CRACK.

One chain shattered. Then another. The glowing array flickered like a dying star as my dragon forced his massive body upward, muscles straining, scales grinding against restraints that were never meant to hold something like him.

"RRRAAAAAHHHH!!!"

The roar hit like a physical wave. Root operatives staggered. Some dropped to their knees from the sheer pressure of it.

Orochimaru's golden eyes widened, not with fear, but with pure, unfiltered fascination.

"…Even my reinforced arrays," he murmured, voice soft and almost loving, "prove insufficient. How… exquisite."

Then

SHATTER.

The entire seal matrix exploded outward in a storm of light and force. The ground caved. Trees were blasted into splinters. And from the heart of the destruction, Dreadbringer rose.

Steam poured from his body in thick white plumes. Cracks of molten light traced between his scales. He looked larger somehow, more solid, more wrathful. His golden eyes locked onto Orochimaru with murderous clarity.

"…You… hurt… us."

The words came deeper now. Clearer. Loaded with intent that made the air itself flinch.

I landed beside him, claws digging into the ruined earth. Dragon and master. Side by side. Perfect synchronization without a single spoken order.

I smirked, tasting blood and ash. "Took you long enough."

Dreadbringer rumbled, the sound vibrating through my bones. "…Burn… everything?"

My eyes sharpened. "Yeah. Everything."

Orochimaru did not retreat. He did not even look concerned. Instead he bit his thumb, let the blood spill, and slammed both hands to the ground.

"Summoning Jutsu."

The forest shook again, harder this time. A massive shadow fell across the battlefield. Then the earth collapsed under impossible weight as something colossal erupted from the dirt.

Purple scales. Cold, ancient eyes. An overwhelming, predatory presence that made even the burning trees seem small.

Manda. The king of serpents.

The giant snake's gaze swept the battlefield before settling on Dreadbringer. A low, contemptuous hiss slid between his fangs.

"…You dare summon me for this?"

Orochimaru's smile was almost playful. "Consider it… entertainment. A rare chance to test yourself against something truly ancient."

Manda's eyes narrowed. Then a slow, vicious grin split his face. "…Very well."

The air snapped.

They moved at the same instant.

Dreadbringer lunged like a living avalanche. Manda struck with the speed of a whip. Fangs met scales in a collision that flattened everything within a hundred meters. Shockwaves tore outward, ripping remaining trees from the ground and sending them tumbling end over end.

Dreadbringer inhaled. His chest glowed like a forge. A beam of concentrated red flame erupted, carving a molten trench across the battlefield. Glass formed instantly where the earth had been. Manda twisted with terrifying agility, taking only a glancing burn that still left a smoking scar along his side.

The serpent countered immediately, body coiling with impossible speed, wrapping around Dreadbringer's torso and squeezing with crushing force. The ground shattered beneath them as they wrestled for dominance. Dreadbringer roared, heat spiking until his scales glowed. He forced his wings outward, breaking part of the coil, then slammed Manda into the earth hard enough to create a new crater.

I didn't watch.

I vanished.

Void Step.

I reappeared above Orochimaru and unleashed One Mind, a storm of mana-infused slashes too fast for normal eyes to track. Orochimaru's body twisted unnaturally, spine bending in ways no human should, avoiding fatal cuts by centimeters. The Kusanagi blade flashed toward my throat.

CLANG.

I caught it again. This time poison surged along the metal, trying to flood my system.

My eyes flared. Mana roared through my veins, burning the toxins out before they could take hold. "Not fast enough."

I drove my knee into his chest. The impact launched him through three burning trees in a spray of splinters and blood.

Above us, dragon and serpent continued their apocalyptic dancefire versus fang, scale versus coil, turning the forest into a warzone of legend. The air itself felt unstable, ready to tear.

I landed, breathing steady, power radiating from every scale. My eyes lifted briefly to the clash overhead, then locked back onto Orochimaru as he rose from the rubble.

"This ends now."

Orochimaru wiped blood from his mouth, smiling wider than ever. Bruised. Burned. Bleeding. And utterly delighted.

"…Yes," he whispered. "Show me more. Show me everything."

A soft breeze cut through the chaos, gentle, out of place, carrying the scent of living green and soft moss.

Then a voice, calm and lethal:

"…You didn't think I'd stay behind, did you?"

Light shimmered. Space bent. And Miku appeared at the edge of the battlefield.

Not soft. Not playful. Terrifying.

Her presence alone changed the air. The flames seemed to hesitate. The ground itself leaned toward her like a loyal beast. Her wings spread slightly, glowing with layered fae magic. Her eyes were cold, calm, and fiercely protective as they swept the scene, first to me, then to Dreadbringer locked with Manda.

She lifted one hand.

The world obeyed.

Roots thicker than steel spears erupted beneath Manda, wrapping his lower body and forcing his coil to loosen with a series of sharp cracks. At the same time reality fractured around the serpent. Three identical Dreadbringers appeared, each breathing fire, each equally real to his senses.

The true Dreadbringer didn't hesitate.

"…Good…!"

He surged forward. Jaws snapped shut on Manda's side. Point-blank dragon fire erupted, blasting scales apart in a shower of blood and heat. Manda thrashed, hissing in genuine pain and confusion.

"WHAT IS THIS?!"

Miku never even looked at him. She already knew the outcome. Her gaze shifted to me and Orochimaru instead.

"…Focus."

I didn't question it. Didn't look at her. Just nodded once. "Yeah."

The world around Orochimaru changed not dramatically, but with lethal subtlety. The ground felt uneven under his feet. My afterimages lingered a fraction too long. Sound came from the wrong directions. Distance itself lied to him.

For the first time his smile faltered.

"…Ah," he said quietly. "So this is *true* illusion."

Too late.

I vanished again. Void Step after Void Step. I was behind him, above him, nowhere, then everywhere at once. One Mind enhanced by Miku's layered deceptions. Every strike landed because he could no longer tell which of me was real.

CRASH.

I drove him into the earth hard enough to create a new crater. I did not stop. Did not give him space to breathe or adapt. Every combat art I possessed flowed together, relentless, perfected, absolute.

Above us Dreadbringer slammed Manda into the ground again, fire pouring into the wounds while Miku's vines tightened and her illusions kept the serpent disoriented. Reality itself had turned against the king of snakes.

Manda recoiled with a furious, almost panicked hiss.

"…This is not worth it!"

He broke free with raw desperation and vanished, summoning undone, retreat complete.

Silence fell in stages. The flames died. The shockwaves faded. The ruined forest stood quiet once more, smoking and broken.

I exhaled slowly, letting the hybrid form recede until only faint scales remained along my arms and shoulders. Miku walked toward me through the devastation, completely unharmed, one hand resting lightly over her belly. Her expression softened the moment our eyes met.

"…You took your time," she said.

I smirked, still tasting ash. "You handled yourself just fine."

Dreadbringer landed heavily behind us, the ground trembling under his weight. Steam still rose from his scales.

"…We… win."

Miku stepped closer and rested her hand against my arm, fingers warm. Her voice dropped into something softer, private.

"…Of course we did."

The three of us stood together in the heart of the ruined forest, dragon, fae, and the man who had somehow become both. Unbroken. Unmatched. And finally, fully acknowledged as something the shinobi world had no name for yet.

Something far beyond normal.

Something that would never again be caught off guard so easily.
