The forest around the treehouse had gone too still.
I felt it the moment I tore through space toward Dreadbringer, something sharp and wrong sliding along the edge of my awareness. But the bond with my dragon burned hotter, louder, pulling me forward. I trusted Miku. I had to.
Back at the hidden treehouse
Inside the warm wooden chamber, Miku paused mid-step. Her bare feet pressed against living moss. One hand drifted protectively over the swell of her belly, fingers splaying as if she could already shield the life inside. Her golden eyes narrowed to slits.
"…I told you not to come back yet," she said softly.
Silence answered her. But she was no longer speaking to me.
Outside, Root operatives moved through the undergrowth like ghosts. Perfect silence. Perfect discipline. One stepped forward, hands already forming the first seal to disrupt the barrier.
The moment his chakra touched the threshold
*WHOOSH.*
The entire treehouse vanished.
Empty air. Empty space. The operative's eyes widened behind his mask.
"…Illusion."
Too late.
Miku stood behind them on a high branch, wings half-spread, barefoot and calm in her light fae dress. Moonlight silvered the edges of her form. Her expression was cold enough to freeze blood.
"…You came all this way," she said, voice soft and almost gentle, "just to die?"
The forest answered her before the ninjas could.
Vines erupted from the earth like living spears. Branches twisted with unnatural speed. Roots cracked upward, thick as a man's waist. One operative was dragged underground in a single violent motion, his scream cut short by soil and wood. Another sliced through a vine only for three more to coil around his arms and legs, yanking him into the canopy where the leaves closed like a mouth.
The world warped.
Suddenly there were ten Mikus standing in a circle, each identical, each watching with the same faint, lethal smile. One operative shouted, "Genjutsu, no this isn't chakra!"
Another staggered. "It's real… but it isn't !"
Miku's voice came from everywhere at once, layered and echoing through the trees.
"You should never have come here."
A Root ninja lunged through one of the duplicates. She dissolved into glowing motes of pollen and light. Behind him a single sharpened vine punched clean through his chest with a wet, final sound. He dropped without another word.
Despite the life growing inside her, Miku did not rush. Every motion was precise, economical, terrifying in its control. She lifted one hand and the ground itself tilted, throwing two operatives off balance just as spears of living wood erupted from below and impaled them. Blood misted the leaves. The scent of sap and iron filled the air.
One of the last operatives staggered back, voice cracking. "This isn't Wood Style… it's something else entirely…"
Miku's eyes glowed faintly gold. Her wings flexed once.
"You're not leaving."
The remaining Root members tried to scatter. The forest refused them. Vines became cages. Illusory Mikus became real long enough to strike. In less than a minute the clearing belonged only to her, bodies broken, masks cracked, the last survivor pinned against a tree by a coil of living wood around his throat.
Miku stepped closer, one hand still resting on her belly, breathing steady. The night itself seemed to lean in around her.
"Tell your master," she whispered to the dying man, "that this forest has a queen now. And she does not share."
Then she closed her fingers. The vine tightened. Silence returned.
Deep Forest
CRACK.
I arrived in a blast of displaced air and shattered space.
The temperature spiked the instant my feet touched the cratered earth. The sealing array around Dreadbringer glowed like a cage of white-hot wire.
Chains of pure energy still coiled around his massive form, but they were already cracking under the force of his rage. And standing calmly at the edge of it all, long black hair stirring in the heat haze, was Orochimaru.
His golden snake eyes found me at once. That smile, slow, delighted, utterly wrong, spread across his pale face.
"…Right on time," he said, voice soft and almost affectionate. "I had begun to wonder whether the bond between you and this magnificent creature was strong enough to draw you. How reassuring to see I was correct."
I stepped forward. The ground cracked beneath my bare feet. Scales were already rising along my arms.
"You again." My voice came out low and cold. "Release him."
Orochimaru tilted his head, studying me the way a collector studies a rare specimen. "Or what? You will burn everything here?" He chuckled, the sound wet and pleased. "My dear boy… I want you to try. Every technique. Every secret. Every drop of that impossible power you carry. Show me. I am so very eager to learn."
I didn't answer with words.
I moved.
Orochimaru blurred forward, a length of living steel flashing from his sleeve. I caught the blade bare-handed. Metal screamed. My grip tightened until the weapon shattered into glittering fragments. Root operatives poured from the trees at the same moment, blades, seals, poisoned needles, perfect coordination.
I exhaled once.
The Dragon Furnace ignited.
Power roared up from the core of my being. Scales of blackened crimson erupted across my skin, dense and unbreakable. Horns curved upward from my temples.
My eyes burned molten gold. A heavy, lethal tail lashed behind me, splitting the earth with every swing. The hybrid form settled over me like a second skin of pure violence.
The ground shattered. A shockwave blasted outward, hurling half a dozen Root ninja through trees like broken dolls.
My voice deepened into something closer to a dragon's growl.
"You wanted to test me." I took one step. The crater widened. "Let's test everything."
I vanished.
Void Step.
I reappeared mid-air above two operatives and tore through them with a blur of Shadow Rush strikes that left only red mist and falling bodies. I landed and flowed into Praying Strikes, each impact collapsing armor and bone inward with wet, final cracks. A blade struck my back and snapped like kindling. My tail whipped once CRACK and an entire tree, along with the ninja hiding behind it, split cleanly in half.
Orochimaru leapt backward, eyes gleaming with near-religious ecstasy.
"Magnificent…!" he breathed. "The fusion of human will and ancient power… it is even more beautiful than I imagined."
His hands flashed through seals. Massive snakes erupted from the earth, thick as pillars, jaws unhinged, venom dripping. I inhaled. My chest glowed. Then I released a concentrated blast of draconic fire that turned the summons into ash mid-strike.
I did not stop.
Every motion was combat art refined by mana, every step a Void Step that folded space, every strike calculated to end lives in the most efficient way possible. The battlefield collapsed under us, trees vaporized, earth cratered, the very air warping from heat and pressure. Even the sealing array around Dreadbringer trembled with every shockwave.
Inside the cage my dragon felt me. His power surged in answer. Another chain snapped. Then another. The matrix began to scream.
Orochimaru's smile thinned for the first time.
"…So this is your current limit," he murmured, almost to himself.
I appeared directly in front of him, horns gleaming, eyes burning, the heat of my presence making the air shimmer.
"Not even close."
Behind me Dreadbringer forced himself upward with a thunderous roar, the last major seals beginning to fracture. Miles away, in a clearing that still smelled of sap and blood, Miku stood among the bodies of every Root operative sent to claim her, breathing steady, one hand resting protectively over our child, the forest itself still coiled around her like a living army.
Three forces.
One night.
And the seal that had been meant to break us was the first thing about to shatter.
