The warm water still clung to my skin when Miku's body went rigid against mine.
Her eyes snapped open sharp, golden, and suddenly cold. One hand locked around my arm hard enough to leave marks.
"What is it?" I asked, already half-rising.
Her voice dropped to a near-whisper, stripped of every soft edge. "…Dreadbringer. He's in danger."
The bond between us flared like a live wire. I felt it too, distant fury, constricting pressure, something cold and artificial wrapping around my dragon's power. No time for questions.
I was out of the bath in a single motion, water cascading off me as clothes and armor reformed in a swirl of mana. Miku was already reaching for her own power, wings flaring, but I caught her wrist gently.
"Stay here. Protect the house. I'll bring him back."
Her eyes flashed, but she gave a single, tight nod. I vanished.
Far from the treehouse's warmth, the forest had gone unnaturally still. No insects. No wind. Even the leaves seemed to hold their breath.
Dreadbringer moved alone through the gloom, massive claws silent against the earth. His golden eyes narrowed.
"…movement…"
The word came clearer now. He had been learning. Adapting. Growing not only in strength, but in mind.
Something was wrong. The air carried a strange scent, cold, chemical, calculated. Not prey. Not nature.
He pressed forward anyway. Protective instinct overrode caution. Anything approaching Kyro's territory would be eliminated.
The ground beneath his feet began to change. Subtle markings etched into soil, roots, and bark. Seals. Hidden. Layered. Waiting.
The moment he crossed the invisible threshold,
CLICK.
The forest erupted.
Sealing arrays ignited in a lattice of glowing chakra. A massive barrier snapped shut around him like a cage. Chains of pure energy exploded upward, coiling around his limbs, wings, and throat.
Dreadbringer's roar shook the trees.
"RRRRAAAHHHH.. !!"
Flames erupted from his maw, only to slam against an invisible wall and scatter into harmless sparks.
Above the canopy, silent figures appeared. Masked. Perfect formation. Root.
From the shadows stepped a pale figure with long black hair and golden, slit-pupiled eyes. A smile that never quite belonged on a human face.
Orochimaru.
"Magnificent," he breathed, voice low and silken, sliding through the air like oil. "Truly… magnificent. To think such a creature still walked this world, unbound and unclaimed."
Dreadbringer's head snapped toward him, a deep growl rolling from his chest. "…you…"
Orochimaru's smile widened, almost affectionate. "So you *can* speak. How delightful. Language is such a rare gift among the truly ancient. Tell me… do you understand what is happening to you right now?"
The dragon surged forward. The ground cracked. Chains strained. Flames built again
The seals pulsed. BOOM. His body was forced back down. The more power he poured out, the tighter the matrix constricted.
Orochimaru stepped closer to the barrier, completely unafraid, golden eyes gleaming with clinical hunger. "Your energy… it is not chakra. Not sage power. Something older. Deeper. A current that predates the very concept of ninjutsu." He licked his lips slowly, almost tasting the air. "I must understand it. Dissect it. Claim even a fragment of its secret."
Dreadbringer stilled for a heartbeat, thinking. Learning.
"…trap…"
"Yes," Orochimaru agreed softly, almost kindly. "A necessary measure. You see, creatures of your magnitude do not submit willingly. They must be… persuaded. Broken, if required. But never killed. That would be such a waste."
He raised one pale hand. New seals flared, sharper, more focused.
"Do not struggle so violently just yet," he continued, voice almost soothing. "I have no intention of ending you. Breaking you, however… rewriting the very shape of your will… that is perfectly acceptable. In fact, I rather look forward to it."
Elsewhere
I tore through the forest with Void Step after Void Step.
CRACK.
Space folded. Trees blurred. The ground shattered beneath every landing.
CRACK.
I could feel Dreadbringer's rage through the bond, raw, protective, and growing heavier by the second. They were suppressing him. Trying to break him.
"Hold on," I snarled under my breath. "I'm coming."
CRACK.
My aura flared. Subtle scales flickered along my arms. Not a full transformation not yet but close enough that the air itself warped around me.
Back at the Trap
Dreadbringer forced himself upward inch by inch. One of the energy chains snapped. The entire formation trembled.
Orochimaru's eyes widened, just a fraction then his smile returned, brighter and more predatory.
"Ah… even this is not enough. How inspiring." He lifted a hand higher. "Phase two."
The ground beneath the dragon shifted. New, darker markings ignited. Gravity itself seemed to multiply. Dreadbringer's body slammed down again, cratering the forest floor.
Orochimaru watched with near-reverent fascination. "I anticipated your strength, of course. You are not the only variable I prepared for this evening." His voice dropped into a soft, almost intimate murmur. "Struggle all you like. Every ounce of resistance only teaches me more. Show me the limits of that ancient fire… so I may one day make it *mine*."
At the Treehous
Miles away, beneath layers of illusion, the treehouse still glowed with quiet warmth.
Then figures appeared at the edge of the clearing, silent, masked, colder and more precise than the ones surrounding Dreadbringer. A specialized Root unit.
One operative raised a hand. A faint pulse scanned the barrier.
"Target confirmed."
"Barrier detected. Nature-based. Illusion layered."
"Subject condition: pregnant. Unknown combat capability."
A brief silence.
Then the order, flat and final:
"Proceed."
In Between
I surged forward again, space cracking around me like breaking glass.
Dreadbringer's fury burned brighter in my chest. I was so focused on reaching him that I never felt the second threat forming behind me
Where Miku waited, alone, with our child.
Two battlefields.
One decision already made.
And the real strike was only just beginning.
