After taking a deep breath to calm herself, Elara turned toward him again and studied his face carefully. Suspecting that she might have misheard him, she parted her lips. "Did you just call me pretty?"
Adrian glanced at her briefly, his face completely devoid of any expression. "Did I?" he asked casually.
A mocking scoff escaped her lips. "You did."
He seemed to think about it for a moment. "I did?" he repeated, sounding almost surprised. His gaze flicked toward her before he gave a small nod. "Then your hearing is better than I thought."
As if he had not just said something completely outrageous, he returned his attention to the road ahead.
For once, Elara didn't know what to say. When she finally found her voice, the only thing that came out was: "You hit your head somewhere."
Adrian went quiet. His fingers tightened slightly around the steering wheel before relaxing again. After a long while, he nodded. "Probably."
