Chapter 51 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 15: "The Ground Beneath Us"

Amara's POV

The morning rush had just ended.

Plates were stacked.

Coffee machines were finally quiet.

Marcus leaned against the counter like a man who had survived a battlefield.

"Okay," he said, exhaling dramatically. "If one more person orders avocado toast with extra personality, I'm quitting."

Rose didn't even look up from her tablet.

"You say that every Tuesday."

Marcus grinned.

"And every Tuesday I stay."

I was wiping down the bar when Luke walked out of the office.

He looked focused.

Too focused.

That expression meant something was coming.

I knew it.

Rose must have sensed it too because she slowly lowered her tablet.

"What happened?"

Luke held up a printed document.

"Just got an email from the building owner."

Marcus perked up.

"That doesn't sound like good news."

Luke placed the paper on the counter.

Rose read it first.

Her eyebrows lifted.

"Oh."

Marcus leaned over her shoulder.

"Oh?? That's not a good oh."

Rose looked at Luke.

"They sold the building."

The room went still.

Marcus blinked.

"…what?"

Rose turned the paper toward us.

"Late last night. Ownership transferred."

My stomach tightened.

"Who bought it?"

Luke didn't answer immediately.

He didn't have to.

Rose already knew.

She sighed.

"Evan."

Marcus slapped the counter.

"That guy again?!"

Carl, who had been reviewing renovation sketches at a nearby table, stood up.

"You're kidding."

Luke shook his head.

"No."

Marcus paced in a small circle.

"Okay, hold on. Let me understand this."

He pointed around the restaurant.

"He just bought the building our restaurant sits in?"

Rose nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus stared at Luke.

"And that means…?"

Luke answered calmly.

"He's our landlord now."

Marcus nearly dropped the coffee pot he was holding.

"You're telling me the guy trying to destroy you now owns the ground under your feet?"

Rose nodded again.

"That's exactly what that means."

Carl muttered,

"Hostile takeover move."

I looked at Luke.

"You think he's going to push us out?"

Luke crossed his arms slightly.

"That's probably the plan."

Marcus groaned.

"This man wakes up every morning asking 'How can I be annoying today?'"

Rose studied the document.

"He legally can't kick us out immediately."

Marcus looked hopeful.

"Good."

Rose continued.

"But he can raise the rent."

Marcus's hope disappeared.

"Oh no."

Carl nodded.

"That's how they do it."

Luke leaned against the counter.

"He's trying to force a choice."

Rose finished the thought.

"Take investor money… or lose the location."

Marcus pointed dramatically.

"I hate this guy."

Right on cue—

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

And like he had perfect timing for drama…

Evan walked in.

Suit perfect.

Smile calm.

Confidence everywhere.

Marcus whispered loudly,

"Speak of the devil."

Evan stepped forward slowly.

"Well… this place is busy."

Luke didn't move.

"Why are you here?"

Evan glanced around the restaurant.

"You know… I almost forgot how charming this place is."

Marcus raised his hand.

"Compliments are suspicious now."

Rose shushed him.

Evan placed his hands in his coat pockets.

"I thought it would be polite to introduce myself properly."

Luke's voice was steady.

"As our landlord."

Evan smiled.

"Yes."

Carl crossed his arms.

"That was fast."

Evan looked at him briefly.

"Business moves quickly."

Marcus muttered,

"So does karma."

Evan ignored him.

He focused on Luke again.

"You've built something impressive here."

Luke didn't respond.

Evan tilted his head slightly.

"But growth requires capital."

Rose whispered to me,

"Here it comes."

Evan continued.

"I'm prepared to offer you a generous investment opportunity."

Marcus laughed.

"Oh wow. I'm shocked."

Luke answered immediately.

"No."

Evan didn't look surprised.

"You should at least hear the numbers."

"No."

Evan's smile tightened just slightly.

"You're very stubborn."

Luke met his gaze.

"And you're very predictable."

The restaurant had gone quiet.

Customers were pretending not to listen.

But everyone was.

Evan stepped closer.

"The new lease terms will arrive soon."

Marcus whispered,

"I hate the sound of that."

Evan finished calmly.

"I hope you'll reconsider my offer when you see them."

Luke said nothing.

Evan nodded politely.

Then turned and walked toward the door.

But just before leaving—

He stopped.

"One more thing."

Luke waited.

Evan glanced back.

"You've always been good at walking away from deals."

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"But this time… you might not have that option."

Then he left.

Marcus collapsed into a chair.

"I officially nominate Evan for Most Annoying Man Alive."

Rose sighed.

"This just got complicated."

Carl looked at Luke.

"You got a plan?"

Luke answered honestly.

"Not yet."

For a few minutes no one spoke.

Then the door opened again.

Marcus groaned.

"If that's another investor I'm hiding in the freezer."

But it wasn't an investor.

It was an older woman.

Elegant.

Confident.

Silver hair tied neatly back.

She stepped inside slowly.

Her eyes scanned the restaurant.

Then they landed on Luke.

And she smiled.

"Still stubborn, I see."

Luke froze.

Completely.

Marcus whispered,

"Uh… Luke?"

Luke stepped forward slowly.

"…Margaret?"

Rose blinked.

"You know her?"

The woman walked closer.

"I should hope so."

She extended her hand to Luke.

Margaret.

Luke shook it.

I watched him carefully.

His expression had changed.

Not defensive.

Not tense.

Something else.

Respect.

Marcus whispered to me,

"Who is she?"

Margaret answered before Luke could.

"Margaret Whitaker."

Rose's eyes widened instantly.

"The Margaret Whitaker?"

Marcus looked confused.

"Should I know that name?"

Rose stared at him.

"She ran one of the largest investment firms in the country."

Marcus choked on air.

"Oh."

Margaret chuckled softly.

"That was years ago."

She turned back to Luke.

"I've been watching the news."

Luke nodded slowly.

"I figured."

Margaret gestured around the restaurant.

"You did exactly what I knew you would."

Rose looked curious.

"You supported Luke during that old deal."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus looked between them.

"Wait… someone actually supported him?"

Luke sighed.

Margaret laughed.

"I was the only one in the room who understood why he walked away."

Carl leaned forward.

"Why did he?"

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Because the numbers were built on lies."

The room went quiet again.

Margaret continued calmly.

"Luke refused to sign off on something that would have collapsed within two years."

Rose whispered,

"You mean he actually saved people from a worse disaster?"

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus pointed toward the door Evan had just exited.

"Someone should tell that guy."

Margaret smiled slightly.

"Oh… I plan to."

Luke frowned slightly.

"You didn't come here just to say hello."

Margaret's eyes sparkled a little.

"No."

She reached into her bag and placed a folder on the counter.

"What's that?" I asked.

Margaret looked at Luke.

"Proof."

Luke opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old emails.

Financial records.

Rose leaned over.

"Oh my…"

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

Rose whispered,

"This shows the project investors manipulated the numbers."

Carl nodded slowly.

"That would clear Luke publicly."

Margaret looked toward the door again.

"And it would destroy Evan's narrative."

Luke closed the folder slowly.

"You're helping me."

Margaret smiled warmly.

"I always believed you made the right decision."

Marcus slapped the counter.

"I like Margaret."

Rose nodded.

"So do I."

Margaret looked around the restaurant.

"And besides…"

She gestured toward the room.

"This place deserves to survive."

Luke looked at her.

"Thank you."

Margaret tilted her head slightly.

"Don't thank me yet."

Marcus frowned.

"…why?"

Margaret smiled.

"Because I also know how to deal with hostile landlords."

Marcus grinned.

"Oh this is about to get interesting."

And for the first time since Evan bought the building…

It felt like Luke finally had a powerful ally again.
