Chapter 52 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 16: "Old Allies, New Battles"

Amara's POV

The restaurant didn't feel the same after Margaret Whitaker walked in.

Not in a bad way.

In a bigger way.

Like the story we were living had suddenly grown beyond our little dining room.

Marcus leaned against the counter watching Margaret review the folder of documents she had brought.

He whispered to me,

"I feel like we just recruited a chess grandmaster."

Rose, standing beside him, nodded.

"That's exactly what happened."

Across the room Luke and Margaret were speaking quietly near the window.

Luke looked serious.

Margaret looked… calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that meant she had already thought ten moves ahead.

Carl walked over holding a mug of coffee.

"So," he said quietly, "who exactly is she again?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"She's the person who might save our building."

Rose corrected him.

"She's the person who might outplay Evan."

Carl nodded slowly.

"I like her already."

At the window, Luke looked up.

"Amara."

I walked over.

Margaret turned to me with a warm smile.

"You must be Amara."

I nodded.

"And you must be the woman who believes Luke made the right decision years ago."

Margaret chuckled softly.

"I was the only one in that boardroom who did."

Luke crossed his arms slightly.

"You still haven't told me why you're really here."

Margaret looked around the restaurant.

"You built something meaningful."

She paused.

"And I hate bullies."

Marcus whispered loudly from across the room,

"Same."

Margaret smiled.

"Evan buying the building is a classic pressure move."

Rose walked closer.

"We assumed that."

Margaret nodded.

"He'll raise the rent high enough to force you to accept his investment."

Carl frowned.

"So we're stuck."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Luke studied her.

"You have an idea."

Margaret slid the folder across the table again.

"These documents prove the project you walked away from was financially manipulated."

Rose flipped through the pages again.

"Investors inflated revenue projections."

Marcus looked confused.

"English please?"

Rose translated.

"They made fake numbers to make the deal look profitable."

Carl nodded slowly.

"That kind of fraud destroys reputations."

Margaret looked at Luke.

"You refused to approve it."

Luke said quietly,

"Yes."

Margaret continued,

"And because of that… you were blamed when the deal collapsed."

Marcus leaned forward.

"So Evan knows the truth?"

Margaret's eyes sharpened slightly.

"Oh, he knows."

The room went quiet.

I felt a small chill run through me.

Luke asked calmly,

"Then why push the story?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Because narratives are powerful."

Rose nodded slowly.

"He controls the story right now."

Margaret pointed at the folder.

"But not for long."

Marcus clapped once.

"Okay I'm officially excited."

Carl laughed.

"You're always excited."

Marcus shrugged.

"True."

Margaret turned serious again.

"Luke, if we release this information correctly… it will shift public perception overnight."

Rose agreed.

"The media would run with it."

Luke leaned back slightly.

"You're suggesting we go public."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus grinned.

"Finally we get to fight back."

But Luke didn't smile.

He looked thoughtful.

Margaret noticed immediately.

"What's the hesitation?"

Luke spoke quietly.

"Because once we do that… this becomes a war."

Marcus pointed toward the door.

"He already started it."

Carl added,

"And he bought the building."

Rose folded her arms.

"He's not playing small."

Margaret looked directly at Luke.

"You've never been afraid of difficult decisions."

Luke looked down at the folder again.

The restaurant buzzed softly with customers talking and dishes clinking.

Life continuing.

Finally he nodded.

"Alright."

Marcus pumped his fist.

"Let's go!"

Margaret raised a finger.

"Careful."

Everyone looked at her.

"This only works if we move strategically."

Rose smiled.

"I like strategy."

Margaret began laying out the plan.

"First, we verify these documents through an independent financial auditor."

Carl nodded.

"Smart."

"Second," Margaret continued, "we give the story to a journalist who values truth over headlines."

Marcus raised his hand.

"Can we make sure it's not Evan's favorite reporter?"

Rose smirked.

"Already thinking ahead."

Margaret looked pleased.

"Third…"

She paused.

Luke waited.

Margaret finished,

"We prepare for Evan's response."

Marcus frowned.

"What response?"

Margaret gave him a knowing look.

"He won't lose quietly."

Carl nodded.

"People like him never do."

Rose sighed.

"So what's his next move?"

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Instead she walked toward the front window.

She looked out at the street.

Then she said something that made everyone uneasy.

"He'll attack what Luke built."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"You mean the restaurant."

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Carl frowned.

"How?"

Margaret turned back toward us.

"If he can't control Luke… he'll try to control the environment around him."

Rose's eyes widened slightly.

"You think he'll try to shut us down."

Margaret didn't say yes.

But she didn't say no either.

At that moment the door opened again.

Everyone turned.

It was one of our regular customers.

Mr. Alvarez.

He came in every afternoon for coffee.

Marcus relaxed.

"Oh thank goodness. A normal human."

But Mr. Alvarez walked straight toward Luke.

He looked concerned.

"Luke… have you seen the news?"

Luke frowned.

"No."

Mr. Alvarez held up his phone.

Rose took it.

Her face changed instantly.

Marcus noticed.

"What now?"

Rose slowly turned the phone around.

The headline read:

"City Officials Reviewing Safety Permits at Rising Restaurant Amid Financial Controversy."

Marcus blinked.

"…you've got to be kidding me."

Carl muttered,

"Inspection pressure."

Margaret sighed softly.

"Right on schedule."

Luke read the article quickly.

"They're questioning our renovation permits."

Carl shook his head.

"I built those renovations myself. They're solid."

Rose scrolled further.

"It says the review request came from an anonymous complaint."

Marcus pointed dramatically.

"Anonymous my foot."

Luke closed the phone.

"Evan."

Margaret nodded.

"He's trying to create regulatory pressure."

Marcus threw his hands up.

"This guy has way too much free time."

Rose looked worried.

"If the city slows us down with inspections, it could hurt business."

Carl nodded.

"And construction plans."

Margaret remained calm.

"Which is exactly what he wants."

Luke took a deep breath.

Then he looked around the restaurant.

At the team.

At the customers who believed in this place.

Then he said something steady and simple.

"We don't panic."

Marcus nodded.

"Good rule."

Luke continued,

"We follow every regulation. We cooperate with inspections."

Carl added confidently,

"They'll find nothing wrong."

Rose said thoughtfully,

"And while they're busy looking for problems…"

She looked at Margaret.

Margaret smiled slightly.

"We release the truth."

Marcus grinned.

"Oh yeah."

Luke looked at Margaret again.

"You're sure this evidence will hold up."

Margaret met his gaze.

"I wouldn't have walked through that door if it didn't."

The room felt different again.

Not worried.

Not defeated.

Focused.

Carl cracked his knuckles.

"Alright then."

Marcus raised a coffee mug like a toast.

"To surviving hostile landlords."

Rose added,

"And rewriting the story."

I looked at Luke.

He looked determined.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just ready.

Outside, somewhere in the city, Evan probably believed he had the upper hand.

But what he didn't realize yet…

Was that Luke Bennett wasn't fighting alone anymore.

And sometimes one powerful ally…

Was all it took to change the entire game. ☕
