After a while, she nodded faintly.
"All right."
Kade kissed her again, this time lingering a little longer before drawing back.
"I won't be gone longer than necessary," he promised. "Stay with the children, and let Elias know if Cooper shows any signs of discomfort. I'll keep you informed of everything."
Dakota nodded, though her fingers remained curled around his shirt.
"When you bring them back, I want to speak to them before anything else happens."
"You will."
She took a slow breath and rested her head against his chest. For a moment, she allowed herself to lean on him, drawing comfort from the warmth of his arms while the weight of everything waiting for them settled over her again.
Beyond the washroom door, Takoda's voice rose in a burst of laughter, followed by Cooper's quieter response. The sound reminded Dakota of why she had to remain behind, even when every part of her wanted to leave immediately and demand answers.
Her children needed her.
