The people who had once been part of her life, who had watched Cooper grow up and had welcomed him into their home on several occasions. If they had truly been involved in what had happened to him, then they had looked at an innocent child and seen an obstacle to be removed.
Dakota's fingers curled into the fabric of Kade's shirt.
"I want to go too."
Kade's expression changed slightly, and he studied her eyes before answering.
"Dakota..."
"I want to face them." Her voice trembled despite her attempt to remain composed. "I want to look at Maya and ask her why. Why would she do something like that to a little boy? Cooper never did anything to her. He didn't even know there was anything wrong. He was just a child who thought those people were part of his family."
The pain in her voice deepened, and she lowered her eyes briefly before looking at him again.
