Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

As the days passed, Amanda and I grew closer in ways I hadn't expected. We became experts at sneaking around—stealing moments, whispers, and smiles whenever no one was watching. Sometimes it was a quick kiss in the hallway, other times it was long conversations late at night where we talked about our days, our frustrations, and the little things that made us laugh.

Being with Amanda felt easy. Comfortable. Like slipping into something that fit just right.

Everything felt perfect—too perfect.

And then there was Kemi.

Yes, that Kemi. My pretty seat partner with the mischievous smile and the bold confidence that always made my heart skip. While I was getting emotionally entangled with Amanda, Kemi and I hadn't exactly drifted apart. We still talked. Still met up at school. Still shared moments that blurred lines I probably shouldn't have let blur.

If I was being honest, I liked the attention. I liked how different they both made me feel.

With Kemi, things were exciting and reckless—quick laughs, stolen moments, the thrill of doing something I wasn't supposed to. With Amanda, it was warmth, comfort, and something that felt dangerously close to real affection.

And in my very flawed logic, I kept telling myself I wasn't doing anything wrong.

After all, I wasn't officially dating either of them… right? 🌚

So I lived in my bubble of denial, floating between school and home, between Kemi's teasing grins and Amanda's gentle care. I loved my life—maybe a little too much. 😩

That bubble burst on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

My grandma had traveled for a friend's burial, and the cook wasn't around. The house was unusually silent—just Amanda and me. We were curled up on the couch, talking and laughing softly, enjoying the rare freedom of being alone without worrying about footsteps or sudden questions.

Then the doorbell rang.

I froze.

We weren't expecting anyone. And for someone to be at the gate meant the security man had let them in.

"I'll check," I said, standing up slowly, my chest tightening with unease.

When I opened the door, my breath caught in my throat.

It was Kemi.

And oh God—she looked stunning. This was the first time I'd seen her out of her school uniform, and it completely threw me off. She looked confident, relaxed, and entirely too beautiful for my own good.

"Uh… Kemi? Hi," I said, blinking in disbelief. "How did you get here?"

"I told your security man I was your classmate," she said casually, stepping past me into the house like she owned the place.

I followed her inside, still stunned. "Okay, but how did you even find my house?"

She turned, grinning. "That's a secret 🌚."

Of course it was.

That was when I noticed Amanda.

She was standing there, her expression tight, her eyes darting between Kemi and me. My stomach dropped. I had completely forgotten she was still in the room.

"Oh, hiiii," Kemi greeted cheerfully, waving.

Amanda didn't respond.

She turned and walked out of the living room without a word.

My chest clenched.

"Rude," Kemi muttered, turning back to me. "Who's that?"

"That's… my grandma's helper," I replied quickly, praying Amanda hadn't heard me.

The moment Kemi sat down, my thoughts spiraled. Is this it? Is this karma finally catching up with me? I wondered.

As if the universe wanted to test me further, Kemi shifted closer and sat on my lap, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Aren't you going to welcome me properly?" she asked, smiling.

Before I could think—or stop her—she leaned in and kissed me.

And I kissed her back. 😭

The sound of something clattering softly behind us made my heart stop.

We turned.

Amanda was standing near the dining area, frozen in place, her eyes locked on us.

Time seemed to slow.

My chest tightened, panic crashing into guilt so hard it made me dizzy.

"Shit," I whispered.

Amanda didn't say a word. She just stared at me for a moment that felt endless, then turned and walked away.

I stood up abruptly, pushing Kemi off my lap. "Kemi, I—I need a minute," I said, already moving.

"Octavia?" she called after me, confusion creeping into her voice.

But I was already walking away, my heart pounding painfully against my ribs.

I found Amanda in her room, sitting on the edge of the bed, her back to me. The silence between us was loud, heavy with everything unspoken.

"I didn't mean for that to happen," I said quietly.

She laughed softly—but there was no humor in it. "You never do," she replied.

That was when it hit me: I had messed up. Badly.

For the first time, I realized that this wasn't just fun and games anymore. Feelings were involved—real ones. And I had been careless with all of them.

Standing there, watching Amanda wipe her face, I knew one thing for sure.

My double life had finally caught up with me.

And whatever came next… I wasn't ready for it.

…To be continued.
