Chapter 24 - The Weight Of Command

Blaze Beam's blood ran cold. The Orc Ruins Catacomb was a catacomb whose energies were carefully monitored and its threats meticulously catalogued. It was a Class D Catacomb, one of the most dangerous in the region, and it was supposed to be stable for at least another day.

"Per calculations, it was left with one more day!" Blaze Beam growled, his fist slamming against the communication panel. The metal dented under the impact, a testament to his barely contained fury. "How could this happen?!"

His mind raced, searching for answers. The Orc Ruins Catacomb had been dormant so far, its energy levels carefully managed by the RA's containment arrays. It should not have been able to breach for at least another twenty-four hours. Something had triggered it—something unnatural, something deliberate.

"The Blood Orc Chieftain...", he realised, his eyes narrowing with cold fury. "It must have sensed our preparations, our intent to assault its domain. It triggered the Orc Ruins Catacomb to cause a diversion, to split our forces, to weaken our response."

The beast was not just powerful—it was cunning. It had outmanoeuvred them, forced their hand, and now the city was paying the price.

But Blaze Beam was not a man who succumbed to despair. He was a warrior, a leader, a protector. And in that moment, as the alarms blared and the red lights pulsed, something ignited within him—a fire that burned brighter than any Catacomb flame.

He blazed with determination.

His voice cut through the chaos like a blade, sharp and commanding. "Listen to me!"

The training chamber fell silent, all eyes turning to their Chief. His party members straightened, their training taking over, their fear momentarily forgotten.

"The Orc Ruins Catacomb has breached once again," Blaze Beam declared, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "This is a Class D outbreak. The creatures within will be numerous, powerful, and relentless. They will spill into the city, and they will kill anyone in their path."

He paused, letting the gravity of his words sink in. Then he continued, his voice rising with conviction.

"But we will not let them. We are Rankers. We are the shield that protects Yosemite City. And I will not—" He slammed his fist against his chest, the sound echoing through the chamber. "—allow these monsters to devastate our home as they did in the past. Never again!"

The words hung in the air, a solemn vow that resonated with every Ranker present. They remembered the devastation of previous outbreaks—the homes destroyed, the lives lost, the families torn apart. They remembered the helplessness, the despair, the bitter taste of failure.

But they also remembered their resolve. Their determination to never let it happen again.

Blaze Beam's gaze swept across his party, meeting each of their eyes in turn. "You will follow my lead. We will move immediately to contain the outbreak. Our priority is to establish a perimeter to prevent the creatures from reaching the civilian districts. We will hold the line until reinforcements arrive."

He turned to his communication officer, a young woman with sharp eyes and steady hands. "Send word to Astartes immediately. The moment he emerges from the Lava Wyvern Catacomb, he is to be notified of the situation. Tell him to rendezvous with us at the Orc Ruins Catacomb entrance. We will need his power."

The officer nodded, her fingers already flying across the communication console. "Message sent, Chief. We will have someone stationed at the Lava Wyvern entrance."

Blaze Beam nodded, then turned to address the broader RA network. His voice boomed through the headquarters, amplified by the building's internal communication arrays, reaching every Ranker within the city.

"This is Chief Blaze Beam to all Rankers in Yosemite City. By the authority vested in me as the head of the RA Branch, I am issuing an immediate recall and deployment order. All available Rankers are to report to their designated staging areas. We have a Class D Catacomb Outbreak, and we need every able-bodied warrior on the front lines."

He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "This is not a drill. This is not a training exercise. This is war. And we will not lose."

As his orders were relayed throughout the city, Blaze Beam turned to face his party. His expression was grim, but his eyes burned with unyielding resolve.

Despite not being in peak condition, he hesitated not a second less. His body was still recovering from his last battle, his strength only at 85% of its maximum. The scar on his chest throbbed with a dull ache, a reminder of the wounds that had yet to fully heal. But there was no time for recovery, no room for hesitation. The city needed him, and he would answer the call.

"Leila," he said, his voice firm. "You will anchor our ranged support. Position yourself on the high ground overlooking the Catacomb entrance. Pick off any creatures that break through the first line of defence. Do not let them pass you."

Leila nodded, her earlier exhaustion forgotten, replaced by a focused intensity. "Understood, Chief. I won't let you down."

"Marcus, you're with me on the front line. Your defensive skills will be essential. I need you to hold the line, no matter what comes through that gate."

Marcus, a broad-shouldered warrior with a massive tower shield strapped to his back, stepped forward. His face was grim, but his voice was steady. "They won't get past me, Chief. I swear it."

"The rest of you," Blaze Beam continued, his gaze sweeping across the remaining members of his party, "will form the second line. Support the front line, cover our flanks, and ensure that no creature slips past our defences. We move as a unit, we fight as a unit, and we survive as a unit."

His party members responded with a chorus of affirmations, their voices rising in unison. The fear that had gripped them moments before had been replaced by a steely determination. They were Rankers. They were warriors. And they would not fail.

Blaze Beam took a moment to observe them, a flicker of pride passing through his heart. These were his people, his comrades, his family. They had fought beside him through countless battles, had bled and suffered and sacrificed. And now, they would face the greatest challenge of their lives.

He allowed himself one final thought, a silent vow that echoed through his mind.

'Under my charge, I was never going to let the damned Catacomb creatures devastate Yosemite as they did in the past. Never again, even if I had to sacrifice my life.'

He raised his fist, his voice ringing with the strength of his conviction. "We move out! For Yosemite! For the innocent! For those who cannot fight for themselves!"

"For Yosemite!" his party roared in response, their voices echoing through the training chamber.

And with that, they surged forward, a tide of warriors ready to meet the darkness head-on. The alarms continued to wail, the red lights continued to pulse, but within the hearts of the Rankers, a different fire burned—a fire of hope, of courage, of unyielding determination.

They would save their city.

They would defeat the darkness.

They would never fail again.

As Blaze Beam and his party raced through the corridors of the RA HQ, the city beyond was already descending into chaos. Reports flooded in from every district—sightings of Orc creatures emerging from the depths, skirmishes breaking out in the streets, civilians fleeing in terror. The Orc Ruins Catacomb had disgorged its horrors upon Yosemite, and the nightmare had begun.

But the RA was responding. Rankers from across the city were mobilising, forming defensive lines, evacuating civilians, engaging the enemy. The machinery of war was grinding into motion, and Blaze Beam was its engine.

He burst out of the headquarters, his party close behind him, and surveyed the scene before him. The sky was lit with the orange glow of distant fires, the sound of battle echoing from multiple directions. Somewhere in the distance, a building collapsed, its foundations undermined by the Catacomb's emergence.

Blaze Beam's jaw tightened.

But there was no time for recriminations. There was only action.

"Move out!" he commanded, and his party surged forward, their weapons gleaming in the firelight.

Behind them, the RA HQ continued to coordinate the defence, its communication arrays blazing with activity. Messages were sent, orders were relayed, and reinforcements were summoned. The entire city was now a battlefield, and every Ranker was a soldier.

In the chaos, one message stood out—a brief, urgent communique directed to a single Ranker. It was a message for Astartes, the Infinity Mage, to be delivered the moment he emerged from the depths of the Lava Wyvern Catacomb.

"The Catacomb has breached. Orc Ruins Catacomb. Class D outbreak. Join us at the front lines. We need you."

The Orc Ruins Catacomb stood right in the centre of Yosemite City, a monolithic structure of seemingly mysterious, ancient, weathered stone that had been sealed and reinforced by the lives of several Rankers. Its entrance was a massive archway, easily fifty feet tall and thirty feet wide, carved with intricate runes that pulsed with a sickly, reddish light. The stone was pitted and scarred, bearing the marks of countless battles, its surface stained with the blood of both monsters and men.

The area surrounding the Catacomb had been cleared for miles—a desolate wasteland of cracked earth and scattered rubble, punctuated by the skeletal remains of buildings that had once stood sentinel. The ground was scarred with fissures, some of them glowing with the hellish light of the Catacomb's depths. The air was thick with the stench of sulfur and rot, and the temperature was unnaturally high, as if the very earth was feverish with the coming outbreak.

The RA had established a forward operating base just one hundred meters from the Catacomb entrance—a fortified position of reinforced barriers, energy shields, and defensive emplacements. Rankers of various classes manned the position, their faces grim as they watched the Catacomb's entrance pulse with increasingly violent energy.

At the forefront stood a contingent of Class F Rankers, their armour gleaming in the hellish glow. They were the first line of defence, the sacrificial shield that would hold the line while reinforcements arrived. Their faces were young, their eyes wide with fear, but their grips on their weapons were steady. They had trained for this moment, prepared for this nightmare.

Behind them stood their Class E troop leader—a grizzled veteran named Sergeant Vance, his face scarred from countless battles, his eyes cold and calculating. He had seen Catacomb outbreaks before, had lost friends and comrades to the horrors that emerged from the depths. He knew what was coming, and he had made his peace with it.

The mana barrier that surrounded the Catacomb entrance was a shimmering wall of blue-white energy, crackling with power. It was the first line of defence, the primary containment measure that had been carefully maintained and reinforced over the years. But now, it flickered and wavered, its surface rippling with strain as the Catacomb's energy surged against it.

The earth began to tremble.

At first, it was barely perceptible—a subtle vibration that rattled the teeth and set the nerves on edge. But within moments, the trembling intensified into a full-blown quake, the ground heaving and bucking as if some colossal beast were stirring beneath the surface. Cracks spider-webbed across the earth, some of them wide enough to swallow a man whole. The air filled with the sound of grinding stone and the deep, resonant rumble of tectonic forces unleashed.

The Catacomb's entrance pulsed violently, its runes blazing with a hellish, reddish light that seemed to bleed into the sky. The mana barrier flickered, its surface distorting as the pressure behind it mounted. Sparks of energy arced across its surface, and a low, ominous hum filled the air—the sound of a barrier on the verge of collapse.

Sergeant Vance's eyes narrowed, his hand tightening on the hilt of his blade. He could feel it—the Malevolent presence lurking within the Catacomb, growing stronger with each passing moment. The Blood Orc Chieftain was awakening, its power surging as it prepared to break free.

"Steady!" Vance shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Hold the line! The barrier will hold!"

But even as the words left his mouth, he knew they were a lie. The barrier was failing, its energy reserves depleted by the relentless assault of the Catacomb's power. It was only a matter of time before it collapsed completely.

Behind him, the RA officials scrambled to activate the secondary barrier, their fingers flying across control panels as they worked to buy time for the main barrier to regenerate. The secondary barrier was weaker, a temporary measure designed to provide a window of opportunity for reinforcements to arrive. It would not hold for long, but it might hold long enough.

The earth shuddered with renewed violence, and a deafening crack split the air as the main mana barrier shattered like glass. Shards of blue-white energy scattered across the battlefield, dissipating into nothingness as the Catacomb's power surged forward unabated.

For a moment, there was silence—a pregnant pause that seemed to stretch into eternity.

Then the gates of the Catacomb exploded.
