The central district of Yosemite City had become a war zone—a sprawling battlefield of shattered streets, burning buildings, and the constant clash of steel and flesh. The once-orderly boulevards were now littered with debris: overturned vehicles, collapsed structures, and the bodies of both Orcs and Rankers. The air was thick with smoke and the acrid stench of blood, punctuated by the screams of the wounded and the guttural war cries of the enemy.
The Orcs had pushed deep into the city, their advance relentless and brutal. They moved in packs, their coordination crude but effective, their raw physical power making them formidable opponents. Each Orc stood seven to eight feet tall, their bodies corded with muscle, their skin tough as iron. Their weapons—crude axes, jagged swords, and massive clubs—were extensions of their savage will, capable of shattering bone and steel alike.
The Rankers had formed defensive lines at key intersections, their formation a carefully coordinated response to the Orc onslaught. Tank-type Rankers stood at the forefront, their shields raised, their defensive skills activated at maximum power. They absorbed the brunt of the Orc attacks, their bodies trembling under the impact of massive frontal smashes. Some held, their barriers flickering but intact; others faltered, their defences shattered by the sheer force of the Orc assault.
But behind them, the warrior and assassin-type Rankers were already moving. They darted around the flanks, their weapons flashing, striking at the Orcs' exposed sides and backs. They targeted joints, eyes, and other weak points, their attacks designed to distract and weaken. Blind Orcs staggered, their swings growing wild and erratic. Wounded Orcs faltered, their movements slowing as blood loss took its toll.
And then came the mage-type Rankers.
Positioned on elevated platforms and rooftops, they unleashed their most powerful offensive skills. Fireballs, lightning bolts, and arcane projectiles rained down on the Orc horde, their explosive power devastating the weakened creatures. Large-area spells cleared entire sections of the battlefield, while single-target high-damage attacks obliterated the strongest Orcs.
The one-two-three combination attack slowed the Orc advance in all directions, giving the support staff the reprieve they desperately needed. Evacuation teams moved through the chaos, guiding civilians to safety, their faces grim but determined. Healer Rankers and other Support Rankers worked tirelessly, their skills providing defensive and offensive boosts to the Assault Rankers while healing their wounds.
The Rankers were organised. They were coordinated. They were prepared.
But the Orcs were relentless.
They were not mindless beasts. They were warriors, born and bred for battle, and their combat instincts were razor-sharp. As the battle progressed, their attacks grew more frantic, more rabid. Their eyes glowed with a crimson light, and their muscles swelled with renewed strength.
This was the special skill trait of the Class D Orcs: {Bloodthirst}.
The longer they engaged in battle, the more their stamina and physical strength increased. Their wounds healed faster, their strikes grew heavier, and their ferocity became almost uncontainable. A battle of attrition was ultimately going to favour the Orcs, their endurance far surpassing that of the Rankers.
Sergeant Vance, who had somehow survived the initial breach, watched the tide of battle with growing concern. His blade was slick with Orc blood, his armour dented and scarred. He could feel the exhaustion creeping into his bones, the weight of the battle pressing down on him.
"We can't keep this up forever", he thought, his eyes scanning the battlefield. The Orcs are getting stronger, faster. We're holding them back, but it's only a matter of time before they break through."
He glanced at his fellow Rankers and saw the same exhaustion mirrored in their faces. They were giving everything they had, pushing their bodies and skills to the limit. But the Orcs were Class D creatures, their power far beyond the Class F and Class E Rankers who formed the bulk of the defensive lines.
The Orcs were still holding strength in reserve, and as the battle progressed, their attacks would only grow more savage.
A young Ranker stumbled, his guard dropping for a fraction of a second. An Orc seized the opportunity, its axe swinging in a brutal arc. The Ranker's scream was cut short as the blade cleaved through his armour and flesh, his body crumpling to the ground.
Vance gritted his teeth, his heart burning with rage. "Hold the line!" he shouted, his voice hoarse. "Don't give them an inch!"
But even as he spoke, he knew the truth. The Rankers were fighting with everything they had. But against the {Bloodthirst} of the Orcs, it might not be enough.
High above the battlefield, Leila moved like a swallow, her body a blur of motion as she repositioned to relieve pressure at several hotspots. Her eyes were sharp, her focus absolute. She was the key asset in halting the Orc advance, her ranged prowess providing a critical advantage.
Her {Light Arrow} skill was her primary weapon, its golden light streaking across the battlefield with deadly precision. She targeted the most dangerous Orcs—the ones breaking through the defensive lines, the ones threatening to overwhelm isolated Rankers. Her arrows struck with unerring accuracy, piercing the eyes or skulls of her targets. Some Orcs died instantly, their bodies collapsing in heaps. Others were severely wounded, their attacks faltering as they reeled from the pain.
The defending Rankers took advantage of her openings, their attacks focusing on the wounded Orcs. Some recovered and moved in for the final kill; others used the reprieve to reorganise their defences, their lines shifting to meet the next wave.
"Leila, we need support on the eastern flank!" a voice crackled over her comms. "They're breaking through!"
Leila pivoted, her {Light Arrow} already forming. She released the shot in a fluid motion, the arrow streaking across the battlefield and striking an Orc commander in the throat. The creature gurgled, its massive body toppling forward.
"Eastern flank secured," she reported, her voice calm despite the chaos. "Hold the line. I'm moving to the next position."
She leapt from her perch, her body soaring through the air as she activated her mobility skills. She landed on a nearby rooftop, her eyes scanning the battlefield. The Orcs were still advancing, their {Bloodthirst} making them increasingly dangerous. But for now, she was holding them back.
'This is delaying the inevitable, ' she thought, her heart heavy with concern. 'These are Class D creatures. Their recovery, tough skin, and monstrous strength are notches above the Class F and Class E Rankers. We're holding them off, but it's only a matter of time before their numbers overwhelm us.'
She glanced toward the Catacomb entrance, where the real battle was being fought. She could see the flashes of light in the distance, hear the thunderous clashes of two titans locked in combat.
'Blaze Beam,' she thought, her grip tightening on her bow. 'You must win. You have to. If you fall... we all fall.'
**********
The entrance to the Orc Ruins Catacomb had become a battleground of apocalyptic proportions. The ground was scarred and cratered, the remnants of shattered barriers and broken stone littering the area like the bones of some ancient leviathan. The air crackled with residual energy, the aftermath of devastating clashes that had left the very atmosphere charged with power.
The Blood Orc Chieftain stood at the centre of the devastation, its massive form silhouetted against the hellish glow of the Catacomb behind it. Its single eye burned with malevolent intelligence, its body coiled with tension, its axe raised in a defensive posture. Despite the wounds it had sustained, it showed no signs of weakness—only a mounting fury that promised devastation.
Blaze Beam faced it, his greatsword held at the ready, its blade gleaming with the fire of his skills. His chest heaved with exertion, his body screaming in protest, but his resolve remained unshaken. He had faced this monster before, had been defeated and wounded. But he had grown stronger since then. He had adapted. He had prepared.
This time, he would not lose.
"{Blazing Piercer}!"
The words left Blaze Beam's lips like a battle cry, his greatsword erupting in a corona of scorching heat. The flames danced along the blade, their intensity rising with each passing moment, until the weapon seemed to become a living pillar of fire. He lunged forward, his speed a blur, his sword aimed at the Chieftain's exposed chest.
The Chieftain reacted with surprising speed, its massive axe sweeping up to meet the attack. The weapons clashed in a thunderous explosion of force and fire, the impact sending shockwaves rippling across the battlefield. The ground beneath them cracked and buckled, chunks of stone flying in all directions.
Blaze Beam gritted his teeth, his arms straining against the force of the Chieftain's counter. The beast was strong—stronger than before. He could feel it in the way the axe pressed against his blade, in the way the creature's muscles bulged with barely contained power.
'It's grown stronger,' he realised, his mind racing. 'Just like the Catacomb.'
He disengaged, leaping backwards to create distance. The Chieftain pursued, its axe swinging in a brutal arc. Blaze Beam ducked under the blow, his body moving with enhanced speed and flexibility.
"{Enhanced Speed}!"
His form flickered, his movements becoming a blur of motion as he dodged the Chieftain's heavy swings. The axe carved through the air where he had been standing moments before, its force sending debris flying. Blaze Beam pivoted, his eyes scanning for an opening.
There—a momentary gap in the Chieftain's defences, a brief window around its underarms where its guard was lowered. Blaze Beam seized the opportunity, his {Blazing Piercer} lashing out in a devastating slash.
But the Chieftain was faster than he expected.
The beast's movements shifted with uncanny precision, its axe flicking in an unpredictable light motion that was completely uncharacteristic of its forceful attacking style. The weapon deflected Blaze Beam's strike, and before he could recover, the Chieftain's fist was already swinging toward his head.
Blaze Beam's instincts screamed a warning, and he threw himself to the side, the massive fist grazing his helmet. The impact sent him stumbling, his vision swimming, but he managed to regain his footing. He resumed his stance, his greatsword held before him, its blade shimmering with an even greater level of fire energy—unparalleled to that of his {Blazing Piercer} skill.
'It's learning,' he thought, his eyes narrowing. 'It's adapting to my fighting style too quickly. Now it even possesses combat intelligence that rivals my own apart from its brute strength.'
He would have to end this quickly.
"{Solar Sword Beam}!"
The words were a roar of defiance, a declaration of ultimate intent. Blaze Beam's greatsword blazed with incandescent fury, its heat intensifying until the air around it shimmered with distortion. A massive pillar of heat energy surged forward, a concentrated beam of solar fire that seemed to consume the very light around it.
The Blood Orc Chieftain's eye widened with something that might have been surprise. It raised its axe, its muscles bulging as it brought the weapon into a high-speed rotation. The blade of the axe became a blur, a spinning wall of metal that intercepted the solar beam.
The impact was cataclysmic. The two forces clashed in an explosion of light and heat, the shockwave flattening everything within a hundred meters. The Chieftain was forced back, its feet carving trenches into the ground as it struggled to withstand the attack. Its skin, already scarred from previous battles, began to smoulder under the intense heat. The flesh blackened and cracked, and the beast let out a roar of agony as the damage mounted.
When the beam finally dissipated, the Chieftain stood several meters away, its body covered in burns, its chest heaving with laboured breaths. It was injured—badly injured—but it was far from defeated.
Blaze Beam's gaze, however, was not good. He had expected the attack to do more damage, to cripple the beast and give him the opening he needed. But the Chieftain had withstood it, had survived, and its wounds were already beginning to heal.
His mind flashed back to his previous battle with the Blood Orc Chieftain—a desperate fight that had cost him severe injuries and the lives of several Rankers. In that battle, his {Solar Sword Beam} had nearly killed the beast, leaving it on the brink of death. But now, the attack had only inflicted moderate damage.
'Even its combat intelligence and the power of its attack are notches higher. If not because I absorbed its High Class D attribute core and my strength improved to the brink of High Class D, I would have lost in the first few blows.'
He was stronger than before, but so was the Chieftain. And the reason was obvious.
Blaze Beam's cold gaze fell upon the monolith Catacomb behind the Chieftain. The structure pulsed with a sinister reddish light, its runes blazing with malevolent energy. He could feel the power emanating from it—a power that was far greater than it had been just days ago.
"It is the Catacomb," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It has grown stronger, showing the symptoms of becoming a Wild Catacomb."
The realisation chilled him to the bone. A Wild Catacomb was a nightmare scenario—an unstable, unpredictable entity that grew in power and danger with each passing day. It would explain why the breach had occurred earlier than their expectations. The Catacomb was evolving, adapting, and its inhabitants were growing stronger as a result.
'Even if we manage to survive this crisis, another Catacomb Breach cannot be allowed to happen again,' he thought grimly. 'The risks of it turning into a Wild Catacomb then will be too high.'
But for now, he had to focus on the immediate threat. The Blood Orc Chieftain was still standing, still fighting, and it was growing stronger with each passing moment.
He watched as the beast's body began to glow with a bloody light—the unmistakable sign of its {Bloodthirst} skill reaching its peak. The burns on its skin began to heal rapidly, the blackened flesh knitting together with horrifying speed. Its muscles swelled, its veins bulged, and its eye blazed with renewed fury.
At the ultimate height of the {Bloodthirst} skill, nothing would be able to stop it.
'I have to end this now,' Blaze Beam resolved, his grip tightening on his greatsword. 'Before it reaches full power. Before it becomes unstoppable.'
He raised his blade, his body blazing with fire energy. The Chieftain met his gaze, its eye burning with hatred and rage.
"I will not let you destroy this city!" Blaze Beam roared, his voice carrying the weight of his conviction. "I will not let you harm another innocent soul! You will fall here, beast, by my hand!"
The Chieftain answered with a roar of its own, its axe raised high.
And they clashed once more, their battle a dance of fire and fury that would determine the fate of Yosemite City.
