Chapter 26 - The Reckoning

"Chief, wait!" Leila's voice cut through the air, her eyes wide with concern. "You're not at full strength! You can't face it alone! Let us help you!"

Blaze Beam paused, his back still turned to her. "My strength is enough," he said, his voice cold and final. "This battle is mine alone. I will not allow another to fall because of my failure."

"But Chief—"

"That's an order, Leila," he said, his tone brooking no argument. "Hold the line. Protect the citizens. That is your duty."

Leila's fists clenched, her jaw tight with frustration. She knew better than to argue, knew that Blaze Beam's mind was made up. But that didn't make it any easier to accept.

Blaze Beam continued his advance, his resolve hardening with each step. The Blood Orc Chieftain had broken through the barriers, had slaughtered innocents, and had brought devastation to his city. And he had failed to stop it.

The memory of the previous outbreak burned in his mind like a brand—the screams of the dying, the faces of the lost, the bitter taste of defeat. He had failed once, and the cost had been immeasurable. He would not fail again.

Not this time.

Never.

The Chieftain watched him approach, its massive axe resting on its shoulder. A low, rumbling chuckle escaped its throat—a sound of mockery and contempt. It had faced Blaze Beam before, had wounded him and forced him to retreat. It had no fear of this human.

Blaze Beam stopped a hundred feet from the monster, his blade raised, his eyes blazing with determination. The scar on his chest throbbed with a dull ache, a reminder of his previous defeat. But he ignored it, channelling his pain into focus.

"You and I," Blaze Beam said, his voice carrying across the battlefield, "have unfinished business."

The Chieftain's eye narrowed, and it raised its axe, its massive form tensing for battle.

"KILL!"

The Orcs around them parted, giving their leader space. This was a battle of titans, and none dared interfere.

Blaze Beam's grip on his blade tightened. He was not at full strength. He knew that. But he had also learned something in his recovery, something that would give him an edge. He had adapted. He had grown.

He would not fail this time. He would remove the blemish on his mind, the stain of his previous defeat. He would atone for his failure, would prove that he was worthy of his title, worthy of his duty, worthy of the trust that the people had placed in him.

For Yosemite. For the innocents. For those who could not fight for themselves.

The Chieftain charged, its axe raised high, its roar shaking the earth. Blaze Beam met it head-on, his blade flashing with a brilliant light.

The battle of the titans had begun.

And somewhere in the darkness below, in the fiery depths of the Lava Wyvern Catacomb, a young warrior with a cool blue gaze fought on, unaware of the storm that was about to engulf him.

But soon, very soon, he would emerge.

And when he did, he would find a city in flames, a people in peril, and a battle that would define his destiny.

***********

The Lava Wyvern Catacomb was a realm of primordial fury, a subterranean hellscape where the very earth bled fire. The first level stretched endlessly before Astartes, a vast cavern of obsidian rock and flowing magma that illuminated the darkness with an angry, crimson glow. Rivers of molten lava snaked across the ground, their surfaces bubbling and hissing as they consumed everything in their path. The air was thick with heat and the acrid stench of sulfur, each breath searing the lungs and testing the limits of endurance.

Stalactites of razor-sharp obsidian hung from the ceiling like fangs, their surfaces gleaming with reflected firelight. The walls were scarred and pitted, bearing the marks of countless eruptions and the claws of the creatures that called this place home. The ground was treacherous, its surface cracked and unstable, with hidden pockets of lava waiting to swallow the unwary.

The temperature was oppressive, easily exceeding the boiling point of water, and the ambient mana in the air was thick with fire-aspected energy. This was not a place for the faint of heart—it was a crucible designed to test even the most seasoned Rankers.

Astartes stood at the entrance, his gaze sweeping across the infernal landscape before him. His new armour gleamed in the fiery light, its enchantments working overtime to regulate his body temperature and protect him from the ambient heat. Despite this, he could feel the sweat beading on his brow, the strain of the environment pressing down on him.

He took a deep breath, steadying himself.

"So this is the Lava Wyvern Catacomb", he thought, his eyes narrowing with focus. "A Class E Catacomb with near-Class D characteristics. The environment alone is a weapon. I must be cautious."

He stepped forward, his boots crunching against the volcanic rock. The heat intensified with each step, the air shimmering with thermal distortion. He activated his {Magic Shield} as a precaution, the translucent barrier flickering to life around him, offering a layer of protection against the hostile environment.

Then the attack came.

The ground beneath Astartes erupted without warning, a geyser of molten lava and razor-sharp rock exploding upward. From within the fiery spray, a wyvern lunged—a serpentine creature of scales and claws, its body adapted to the hellish environment. Its maw was filled with rows of jagged teeth, and its eyes burned with predatory hunger.

Astartes reacted with instinct honed by countless battles. He threw himself to the side, his {Magic Shield} absorbing the brunt of the lava spray. The barrier flickered but held, its surface sizzling as the molten rock splashed against it.

Before he could recover, a second wyvern burst from the lava behind him, its claws raking across his shield. The barrier buckled but did not break, giving Astartes the precious seconds he needed to retaliate.

"{Icicle Blast: Giant Ice Sword}!" he shouted, his hand sweeping through the air.

A massive blade of crystallised ice materialised above him, its surface gleaming with frost. The sword descended with devastating force, cleaving the first wyvern in two before it could retreat. The creature's body dissolved into ash, leaving behind a glowing attribute core.

The second wyvern lunged, but Astartes was already moving. He pivoted on his heel, his hand sweeping in a wide arc, and the {Giant Ice Sword} swung around to bisect the second creature. Two down, but more were coming.

The cavern erupted with motion. Wyverns burst from the lava streams, from the walls, from the ceiling above. They came in a wave, their screeching cries echoing through the cavern. Astartes counted at least a dozen—a full hunting pack, coordinated and relentless.

He raised his {Magic Shield} to block their attacks, but the wyverns were cunning. They coordinated their assault, launching volleys of lava balls that exploded against his barrier with concussive force. Each impact drained his energy, chipping away at his defences.

From above, a flying wyvern descended, its wings beating the superheated air. It swooped low, its massive claws swatting Astartes like a toy. The force of the blow sent him hurtling across the cavern, his body crashing against the obsidian wall with bone-jarring force. His {Magic Shield} flickered and shattered, the protective energy dissipating into nothing.

Before he could recover, the wyvern opened its maw and launched a massive lava ball directly at him. Astartes rolled, the projectile slamming into the wall behind him and exploding in a shower of molten rock.

But even as he scrambled to his feet, his hand was already gesturing towards it, his skill already ready to launch.

"{Icicle Blast}!"

A spear of crystalline ice shot from his palm, its tip gleaming with deadly precision. The projectile struck the wyvern mid-swoop, piercing its chest and emerging from its back in a spray of black blood. The creature crumpled to the ground, its wings folding lifelessly.

Astartes rose to his feet, his chest heaving for a split moment before he recovered his breath, his strengthened body barely aching from the impact. But there was no time to rest. More wyverns were coming, their screeches echoing through the cavern.

In the distance, a massive form emerged from the lava streams—a wyvern of truly monstrous proportions. Its belly was distended and swollen, a grotesque bulge that marked it as a "Big Belly Wyvern," a rare variant capable of storing vast quantities of molten lava within its body. As it approached, it began spewing indiscriminate lava across the ground, expanding the lava streams and restricting Astartes's movements.

The other wyverns followed its lead, bombarding him from afar with lava balls and fiery projectiles. The air became a hailstorm of molten rock, forcing Astartes to dodge and weave, his movements growing increasingly rapid.

'They're trying to corner me,' he realised, his mind racing. 'They want to force me into the lava streams, to burn me alive. I can't let them.'

He gritted his teeth, his resolve hardening. If they wanted a slaughter, he would give them a slaughter.

"Come!" he chuckled, his voice echoing through the cavern.

He activated all his skills simultaneously, without reserve. {Magic Shield} flared to life around him, a shimmering barrier of energy that deflected the incoming projectiles. {Darkness Hand} erupted from his shoulders, two semi-corporeal tendrils of shadow that writhed and twisted like living serpents. {Icicle Blast} coalesced around his hands, forming a pair of ice blades that gleamed with deadly cold.

He had become a weapon of mass destruction, a whirlwind of elemental fury.

He catapulted himself into the air, his legs propelling him toward the Big Belly Wyvern. The creature's eyes widened in shock, its jaws opening to spew another torrent of lava.

But Astartes was faster.

"{Icicle Blast: Ice Sword}!"he screamed, and a massive blade of ice materialised above him. He grasped its hilt, his momentum carrying him forward, and drove the blade deep into the wyvern's distended belly.

The creature shrieked, a horrifying sound of agony and rage. Its body convulsed, its stored lava exploding outward in a geyser of molten rock. Astartes leapt back, his {Magic Shield} flaring to protect him from the blast.

The Big Belly Wyvern collapsed, its body dissolving into ash and leaving behind a middle-grade attribute core.

But Astartes had no time to celebrate. He was falling, the lava streams below rushing up to meet him.

As he plunged toward the molten death below, Astartes's mind remained calm, his focus unshaken. {Darkness Hand} activated at his feet; two streams of shadow energy erupted from his boots and lashed out toward the flying wyverns above. The tendrils wrapped around their bodies like living serpents, constricting with crushing force.

The wyverns screeched in terror as the darkness energy drained their vitality, their struggles growing weaker with each passing second. Within moments, they were dead, their bodies falling to the ground in a shower of ash.

The shadow tendrils retracted, pulling Astartes upward and launching him toward the cavern wall. He twisted in midair, his feet finding purchase on the obsidian surface. He pushed off, propelling himself back into the heart of the battle.

The underground wyverns—the ones that had ambushed him from the lava—had regrouped, their eyes burning with hatred. They lunged at him, their claws extended, their maws dripping with molten fire.

"{Icicle Blast}!" Astartes shouted, and a barrage of ice spears shot from his hands. The projectiles struck the wyverns with deadly precision, piercing their hides and freezing their internal organs. One by one, they fell, their bodies dissolving into ash.

Astartes landed gracefully on a circular platform of ice that he created beneath his feet, the frozen surface hissing as it made contact with the molten rock. He stood tall, his chest heaving, his body covered in sweat and soot.

His {Greater Heal} skill activated automatically, its soothing energy repairing his damaged muscles and replenishing his vitality.

He allowed himself a moment of respite, his gaze still scanning the cavern for any surprises. The battle had been brutal, but he had emerged victorious. The first level was nearly cleared.

Then he saw them.

Two wyverns, their bodies hidden within the lava streams, their eyes barely visible above the surface. They had been waiting, lurking, watching for an opportunity to strike.

"Clever," Astartes murmured, a cold smile playing on his lips. "But not clever enough."

He extended his hand, his {Darkness Hand} skill activating once more. The semi-corporeal tendrils of shadow energy elongated, stretching across the distance and plunging into the lava streams. The wyverns screeched in agony as the darkness drained their vitality, their bodies convulsing as the life was ripped from them.

Within moments, they were dead, their bodies dissolving into ash.

Astartes retracted his shadow tendrils and collected his attribute cores, moving swiftly across the ice platform. He counted the spoils of his battle—dozens of low-grade cores and a single middle-grade core from the Big Belly Wyvern.

"Such a treacherous Catacomb," he shook his head, his voice carrying a note of grudging respect. With such a harsh environment and complex enemies hidden within this place, it was no wonder it was not easily solo-conquered.

Astartes prepared himself to descend to the second level, his body restored by his {Greater Heal} skill, his mana reserves replenished. He had no reason to hesitate, no reason to delay. The Blood Orc Chieftain awaited him below, and he was determined to face it.

But for some reason, he paused. A cold feeling settled in the pit of his stomach, an inexplicable sense of foreboding that made his skin crawl. His instincts, honed by countless battles, screamed a warning: something was wrong. Something had happened.

He shook his head, trying to dismiss the feeling.

"It's nothing," he told himself. "Just the stress of the battle. The environment is getting to me."

But the feeling persisted, growing stronger with each passing moment. It was a bad feeling, a sense of unease that gnawed at his concentration. He thought of Zoom Glass waiting outside, of the RA officials stationed at the entrance, of the city beyond.

"Could something have happened?' he wondered, his brow furrowing. 'Could the Catacomb have... no. The barriers are secure. Although communication here is impossible, Zoom Glass would have notified me beforehand if something went wrong.'

But even as he tried to convince himself, he knew that the foreboding was real. His instincts had never failed him before.

He forced himself to focus, to push the unease aside. He could not stop. He had come too far, fought too hard, to turn back now. The Lava Reptile Catacomb Lord at the depths needed to be eliminated, and the Catacomb needed to be cleared. That was his mission, his purpose.

"Even if something has happened, I cannot allow it to distract me. I must finish what I started."

He took a deep breath, steadying himself. The feeling of unease remained, but he channelled it into urgency—a renewed determination to clear the Catacomb as quickly as possible.

He charged into the second level.
