Author's Note
Before you begin, I'd like to share a small note.
This story is built around mystery, psychology, character development, and a gradual unfolding of its world. The answers will not come immediately, and some mysteries may take time to reveal themselves.
If the beginning feels quieter than you expected, I ask you to give the story a little time. The events that follow will gradually lead toward greater mysteries, higher stakes, and a much faster pace.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
Let's begin...
Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom
Part 1
The morning sun rose steadily above an endless blue sky, bathing the quiet streets in a warm golden glow.
At the corner of the road leading toward the academy stood a seventeen-year-old boy.
A school bag rested loosely over one shoulder as a gentle breeze moved through his long black hair.
His calm eyes were fixed on a single wildflower blooming beside the roadside.
Small.
Fragile.
Silent.
Yet undeniably beautiful.
For a brief moment, everything around him seemed to fade.
The distant voices of students.
The passing cars.
Even the wind.
None of it seemed to reach him.
His expression remained completely calm.
Almost emotionless.
His name was—
Yamahasi Saino.
The boy everyone admired...
Yet almost no one truly knew.
A cheerful voice suddenly broke through the silence.
"Oi, Saino!"
Saino slowly turned around.
A white-haired boy was running toward him, waving enthusiastically as though they hadn't seen each other in years.
His bright smile stood in complete contrast to Saino's expressionless face.
He was—
Kamen Yagami.
Saino's childhood friend.
His best friend.
And perhaps the only person who could effortlessly pull him back from his thoughts.
Yagami stopped beside him, slightly out of breath.
"Were you planning to admire that flower until graduation?"
He grinned.
"At this rate, we're going to be late."
Saino looked at him for a moment.
Then gave a small nod.
"...Let's go."
The two began walking toward the academy.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Yagami glanced sideways at him.
"Were you thinking about something again?"
Saino's eyes drifted back toward the flower one last time.
"I think..."
He paused.
"I was just confessing my love to nature."
Yagami froze.
"...Love?"
He slowly placed a hand over his chest, his expression becoming dramatically serious.
"Is that so?"
A second later, he burst into laughter.
"You've become even weirder than before."
Saino simply continued walking.
Yagami shook his head with a helpless smile.
"Whatever. Come on. We're seriously going to be late."
"...Yeah."
They continued toward the academy.
Soon, the enormous campus came into view.
Towering glass buildings reflected the morning sunlight like enormous mirrors. Students moved between different departments and academic wings, while research drones quietly floated above the central courtyard.
Everything about the academy radiated excellence.
Yet somehow...
Saino felt nothing.
The first bell echoed across the campus.
Moments later—
Classroom 3-A.
The room buzzed with the sounds of another ordinary lesson.
Books lay open across every desk.
Pens moved steadily across notebooks.
At the front of the room, the teacher explained a complex mathematical theorem while elegant equations appeared across the digital board.
Almost everyone was paying attention.
Almost.
Near the window sat Saino.
His cheek rested lazily against one hand as his eyes wandered beyond the classroom.
Outside, white clouds drifted peacefully across the endless sky.
His gaze followed them.
Not because they were beautiful.
His thoughts had simply wandered somewhere else.
How did this universe truly begin?
Does a Creator really exist?
Or was the idea of a Creator simply something humanity created to explain what it couldn't understand?
His eyes remained fixed on the sky.
And if a Creator exists...
Who created the Creator?
Questions.
Endless questions.
Questions no textbook could answer.
"...Saino."
No response.
The teacher continued.
"...Saino."
The classroom gradually fell silent.
Saino blinked once.
His attention slowly returned to the room.
He looked toward the teacher.
The teacher gave him an awkward smile.
"Would you mind answering the question?"
Saino stood.
Only then did he realize something.
He hadn't heard the question.
Should I ask him to repeat it?
He paused.
No...
I'm not in the mood.
So he simply remained silent.
Whispers immediately spread throughout the classroom.
"Did he actually not know?"
"Impossible."
"That's Yamahasi Saino."
"He always knows the answer."
Across the room, a student ranked third quietly adjusted his glasses.
Harusa.
His sharp eyes remained fixed on Saino.
Impossible.
For anyone else... perhaps.
But not him.
He definitely knows the answer.
Something else is occupying his mind.
Or perhaps... he simply doesn't wish to answer.
The teacher frowned slightly.
"Saino... are you feeling unwell?"
"...Just a slight headache."
"I see."
The teacher nodded.
"Then go outside and get some fresh air."
Saino gave a small nod and walked toward the door.
Just as he reached it—
"Sensei."
A hand suddenly shot into the air.
Yagami wore his usual carefree grin.
"I'll go with him."
"It's fine," Saino replied without looking back.
Yagami ignored him.
"What if he collapses in the hallway because of that headache? Someone has to look after him."
Several students chuckled.
"Please, Sensei. Let me go."
The teacher hesitated.
But before he could answer, Yagami had already left the classroom.
The teacher stared at the open doorway.
Then sighed.
"...That boy."
There was little point in stopping him now.
Outside, Yagami quickly caught up to Saino.
He clasped both hands behind his head as they walked through the quiet hallway.
Saino said nothing.
He already knew.
Yagami always did whatever he wanted.
"You think too much, Saino."
Yagami laughed.
"One day your brain's going to explode."
"...Maybe."
Saino answered calmly.
"Maybe it already has."
Yagami blinked.
Then smiled.
"Good."
He looked relieved.
"That means you're fine."
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Then Saino unexpectedly broke the silence.
"...You're different, Yagami."
Yagami looked at him.
"Hm?"
"I'm different?"
"No."
Saino kept his eyes ahead.
"...Nothing."
Inside his mind, however, another thought remained.
You're far smarter than you pretend to be.
Before Yagami could ask anything else, the restroom came into view.
"I'll go alone."
"Alright."
Yagami stopped.
Saino gave him a small nod before stepping inside.
The door quietly closed behind him.
Yagami remained alone in the hallway.
His cheerful smile slowly disappeared.
He let out a quiet sigh.
"Man..."
"I wanted to talk with him a little longer."
He glanced toward the closed door.
"Now I'll have to wait until lunch."
For a brief moment, a trace of loneliness crossed his face.
Then—
Just as quickly as it had appeared—
His familiar carefree smile returned.
As though nothing had happened.
He turned around and headed back toward the classroom.
Inside the restroom, Saino stood beside the closed door.
His eyes were distant.
His thoughts deeper than ever.
For ordinary people, the future was uncertain.
Unknown.
Unpredictable.
It was shaped by the choices they made in the present.
Saino slowly lowered his head.
But for me...
Even while using less than half of my potential...
There is almost nothing about my future that I cannot predict.
Silence filled the room.
He closed his eyes.
And that isn't the life I came here to live.
I want a future I cannot foresee.
A present that can still surprise me.
His eyes opened again.
Perhaps...
A normal life begins with taking the first step toward the unknown.
Chapter 1 — A Mind Beyond the Classroom
Part 2
The sharp ring of the lunch bell echoed throughout the academy.
Within moments, the once-orderly hallways burst into life.
Students poured out of their classrooms in endless waves.
Some discussed club activities.
Others argued about examination results.
Many hurried toward the cafeteria before the most popular meals disappeared.
Yagami stretched his arms behind his head as he stepped into the crowded corridor.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"I wonder..."
"Did Saino actually stay in the classroom?"
He paused.
"Or did he disappear somewhere again?"
Knowing him...
Either was entirely possible.
The academy cafeteria was as lively as ever.
Hundreds of conversations overlapped, forming a constant wave of noise.
Trays clattered.
Students laughed.
The aroma of freshly prepared food filled the enormous hall.
Yet amid all the commotion...
One table remained almost completely isolated.
A lone boy sat there quietly, eating his lunch without the slightest interest in the world around him.
Saino.
As always, he had chosen the quietest corner of the cafeteria.
It was almost as though silence itself were his closest companion.
"There you are!"
A familiar voice shattered the peaceful atmosphere.
Yagami dropped into the chair opposite him with a relieved sigh.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
Saino slowly raised his eyes.
"...You found me."
Yagami grinned.
"I always do."
He looked at their lunch trays.
"Wanna trade?"
Saino glanced down.
"Our meals are identical."
"So?"
"Trading identical food changes nothing."
Silence.
Yagami stared at him.
Saino continued eating.
Finally, Yagami sighed.
"You're impossible."
"It saves time."
Yagami burst out laughing.
Several nearby students turned toward them.
Across the cafeteria, a group of first-year students also noticed the unusual pair.
One leaned forward.
"Hey..."
"Who's that long-haired guy?"
Another student looked at him in surprise.
"You don't know him?"
"No."
"That's Saino Yamahasi."
"Yama...Saino?"
The first-year's eyes widened.
"I heard he ranked first in ten of the country's most prestigious scholarship examinations."
Another student nodded.
"And scored perfect marks in every one of them."
"Seriously?"
"Almost every elite institute in the country wanted him."
"He could've studied anywhere."
"But instead..."
"He chose Vectoractescale Academy."
The first-year frowned.
"Why?"
The other student shrugged.
"No one knows."
"He never talks about himself."
The first-year shifted his gaze toward the white-haired boy sitting opposite Saino.
"And what about him?"
"That's Kamen Yagami."
"He's almost as famous."
"The most popular boy in the academy."
The first-year blinked.
"They're really friends?"
"They're complete opposites."
Another student nodded.
"I've never even seen Saino laugh."
The first-year looked between them.
"...Maybe Yagami is just using him."
"You're wrong."
A calm voice interrupted the conversation.
The three first-years immediately turned around.
A tall boy stood behind them, calmly adjusting his glasses.
His sharp eyes carried a quiet confidence.
Harusa.
The academy's third-ranked student.
One of its greatest prodigies.
The first-years immediately straightened.
"I-It's Harusa..."
"I heard he's from one of the richest families in the country..."
Harusa looked at them.
"Hey, you bunch of cockroaches."
The first-years froze.
"Don't you have any respect for your seniors?"
His tone remained stern.
"And for your information, Yagami and Saino are childhood friends."
He adjusted his glasses.
"Their friendship isn't something fools like you can understand."
The first-years exchanged uneasy glances.
Before anyone could respond, a cheerful feminine voice joined the conversation.
"Looks like I arrived at the interesting part."
A beautiful girl carrying a lunch tray stopped beside Harusa.
Long chestnut hair swayed gently behind her.
Her confident eyes carried a relaxed warmth.
She smiled.
Sarisi.
The academy's fourth-ranked student.
Known throughout the school as one of its brightest minds and finest athletes.
The first-years immediately recognized her.
"S-Sarisi..."
She glanced toward them.
"So..."
"Were you talking about Saino?"
One of the first-years awkwardly scratched his head.
"We were just wondering..."
"...why everyone respects him so much."
Sarisi's gaze drifted toward the quiet corner of the cafeteria.
Saino continued eating as though nothing around him existed.
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"You know..."
"Something very similar happened during our first year."
One of the students hesitated.
"What happened?"
Sarisi's smile faded slightly.
"We called that incident..."
She paused.
"...the dark past."
The first-years exchanged confused glances.
"Fake rumors."
Her voice became quieter.
"Actually..."
"It would be better if you knew nothing about that incident."
She looked directly at them.
"And the main point is..."
"You shouldn't talk about things you don't understand, fools."
The first-years immediately fell silent.
Sarisi turned away.
Then she looked toward Harusa.
"Hey, Harusa."
"Why don't we eat together today?"
Harusa remained silent for a few seconds.
"...Sure."
The two walked away.
The first-years watched them leave.
Only after they had gone did the boys finally breathe again.
Sarisi glanced sideways at Harusa.
"You've really changed."
Harusa looked at her.
"...Changed?"
She gave a soft chuckle.
"The Harusa from our first year would've ignored a conversation like that."
"But today..."
"You couldn't even stand hearing someone speak badly about Saino and Yagami."
Harusa immediately looked away.
"That's not it."
"They're my classmates."
He adjusted his glasses.
"It's my responsibility to correct false or malicious rumors about them."
Sarisi smiled.
"Oh?"
"Really?"
Her expression became teasing.
"Or you simply can't stand hearing anything bad about them?"
Harusa's expression tightened.
"That's not the truth."
He paused.
Then sighed.
"But..."
"I admire them."
Sarisi's smile softened.
Harusa continued.
"They're true friends."
His gaze drifted toward the cafeteria.
"The bond between Saino and Yagami..."
"...isn't ordinary friendship."
"It's built upon years of trust."
"And that's something outsiders will never understand."
Sarisi nodded.
"True friends."
Then she smiled.
"Yes."
Harusa's expression became slightly more serious.
"But, Sarisi..."
"I think you shouldn't talk about that incident."
He paused.
"That is..."
His voice trailed off.
A memory suddenly surfaced in his mind.
I still remember that day.
A boy knelt helplessly on the polished floor.
His entire body trembled.
Blood stained the corner of his mouth.
Several of his teeth had already been knocked out.
Tears streamed endlessly down his face.
"I-I'm sorry..."
"I'm sorry, Saino..."
"I made everything up..."
"Please..."
"Please forgive me..."
Standing before him...
Saino remained completely motionless.
His expression never changed.
Calm.
Silent.
Unreadable.
He looked down at the trembling boy.
There was no hatred in his eyes.
No anger.
Not even pity.
Only indifference.
Behind him stood another figure.
Yagami.
His usual cheerful smile was gone.
Instead...
A faint smile rested upon his lips.
A smile that felt strangely unsettling.
Cold.
Empty.
Almost frightening.
After that day...
No one ever saw that boy at the academy again.
The memory faded.
Back in the cafeteria, Harusa remained silent.
Meanwhile...
At the table across the hall—
Yagami was laughing over something completely childish.
His bright, carefree smile looked as innocent as ever.
Almost as though the person from Harusa's memory had never existed.
Saino continued eating beside him.
Yagami suddenly grinned.
"Wanna race?"
Saino didn't even look up.
"Race what?"
"Who can finish eating first."
Saino glanced at his tray.
"You'll win."
"Oh?"
Yagami smiled.
"But you should at least try once."
"No."
Saino returned to his meal.
"I'm not interested."
Yagami sighed dramatically.
"You're no fun."
Saino ignored him.
Yet there was something unusual about the effect he had on the people around him.
Some admired him.
Some feared him.
Some wished to become like him.
Others wished to surpass him.
And without even realizing it...
The people around Saino had begun to change simply because of his existence.
But none of those thoughts reached him.
His mind had already wandered far beyond the walls of the academy.
Beyond examinations.
Beyond rankings.
Beyond the ordinary lives surrounding him.
Toward questions no one else dared to ask.
And answers no one had yet discovered.
A short while later, Harusa placed his tray down.
"I want my position back."
Sarisi looked at him.
"Your position?"
Harusa's eyes narrowed.
"I'll defeat both of them."
A faint smile appeared on Sarisi's face.
"I hope you do."
The final school bell eventually echoed across the academy.
The school day had come to an end.
Students began leaving the classrooms in groups.
Some started leaving the classroom .
Some headed toward clubs.
Others rushed toward the gates.
Saino was quietly packing his belongings.
Suddenly, he noticed a small letter lying at the corner of his desk. he picked it up and examined it for a moment before leaving the classroom.
A few seconds later, after passing through the school gate, he finally stopped.
"Is this a real letter… or someone's prank?"
He looked at the letter in his hand.
"Should I go there?"
Meanwhile, Yagami found himself surrounded by several girls.
"Yagami, are you free tomorrow?"
"Why don't we go on a date?"
"I have two tickets for a movie tomorrow!"
"Yagami, what about—"
One invitation followed another.
It was nothing unusual for him.
Being the most popular student in the academy came with its own inconveniences.
Yagami gave them an apologetic smile.
"Sorry, girls."
"I'm busy today."
"See you later."
He quickly slipped away.
A few minutes later, he was running through the corridor with his school bag bouncing against his shoulder.
He probably went ahead already.
I think I can still catch him.
He increased his pace.
Meanwhile, far ahead...
Saino stood alone.
He quietly gazed at the endless blue sky once again.
The clouds drifted lazily across the horizon, carried wherever the wind desired.
His expression remained unchanged.
Calm.
Unreadable.
Almost as though he belonged to the same stillness as the sky above him.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Saino didn't turn around.
"I was waiting for you, Yaga."
Yagami stopped.
"What?"
He caught his breath.
"You were waiting for me?"
He looked around.
"But you should at least wait for me at the school gate."
"Why did you come this far?"
Saino didn't answer.
He simply turned.
"Okay."
"Let's go."
Yagami stared at him for a moment.
Then smiled.
"Okay."
The two began walking together.
After a few moments, Yagami suddenly remembered something.
"Hey, Saino."
"What about this weekend?"
Saino thought for a moment.
"I have plans."
"I'll study."
"Then I'll go to the market."
"And after that, I'll probably..."
Yagami stared at him.
"How can you do such boring things?"
Saino looked at him.
"You should enjoy yourself a little more."
He suddenly brightened.
"Actually..."
"Why don't we go to a library this weekend?"
Saino's eyes shifted toward him.
"A library?"
"Yeah."
"I know you're interested in history books."
Yagami smiled.
"I heard about this place from my uncle when I was little."
"They say it's more than a hundred years old."
For the first time that afternoon...
A faint spark of interest appeared in Saino's eyes.
"...Alright, Yaga."
"I'll come."
Yagami grinned.
"Perfect."
"Then it's settled."
Separate Paths
A few moments later, the two reached the point where they would go their separate ways.
Yagami raised a hand.
"Alright!"
"See you tomorrow, Saino!"
Saino simply raised his hand in response.
"...Goodbye."
Yagami turned and walked away.
Saino watched him for a moment before continuing in the opposite direction.
Neither of them knew it yet...
But the peaceful days they considered ordinary...
Were quietly approaching their end.
Because before long—
A single decision...
Would begin a chain of events capable of changing not only the academy...
But the entire world.
Above them, the sky remained endlessly blue.
The clouds continued drifting with the wind.
As though the sky alone already knew...
What awaited beyond tomorrow.
