Chapter 5 - Numb

I've never really had a near death experience before but there's no way I survived any of that. Even if I did, it wouldn't be the same after watching my family die.

Those things tore everyone apart like it was nothing and it didn't even bother them in the slightest. None of us deserved any of that.

Footsteps are all I can hear around me. "I'm surprised this guy even survived. There was a lot more of them than we thought." The muffled voice of a man says.

"I'd say we got lucky. We made it in time to save him from death. Not everyone gets that opportunity, especially not in this world anymore." A muffled voice of a woman replies.

I couldn't really feel much within my arm... Actually my whole body kind of feels numb at this point. It is still quite dark as well.

"Do you think he'll become one of those things?" A man asks with a bit of concern in his voice.

I can just barely feel something pierce into my arm but it doesn't really hurt or anything. The numbness is helping me ignore any sort of pain that could've came from the thing.

"He won't. Most people have already turned that will, at least for now." The woman answers with some confidence.

People are turning into monsters? I don't really understand it... Everything that happened has been hitting me with a big wave of confusion.

How did I survive the attack from those monsters anyway? I lost so much blood that I should've bled out if anything.

I—

Before I could finish my thought my eyes finally begin to open and I can see that the room is lit up. It isn't completely dark like how it was in my house.

So I slowly start to sit up while taking a look around the room. It looks like a makeshift doctor office with some medical supplies scattered throughout the room.

Nobody else seems to be in the room right now either. I couldn't help but look down at my left arm, blood was no longer dripping down it.

They wrapped it up with some bandages before they left to go do whatever it is they are doing. But something definitely seems off about my arm...

No pain was flowing throughout it but I could see some sort of weird tendril peaking out from the wraps.

I could feel it slowly moving underneath the bandages, it felt disgusting. "Don't panic Liam." I say calmly.

Click. Turn. The door sounds like it opens up and the sound of people entering the room distracts me from the strange feeling in my arm.

So I turn my head to see who's in the room with me. A woman standing with two men, both of which seem to be armed with some sort of weapons.

Their faces are concealed by these gas masks but I could just barely see the woman's long flowing blue hair, it was going down past her shoulders.

She steps closer to the bed I'm sitting on. "It is good that you woke up. I honestly didn't know if you were going to make it or not." She says with relief in her voice.

I look a bit more closely at the men standing next to her. "I didn't expect to survive... But what's with the guards?" I ask while keeping my eye on them.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. My heart begins to feel like it is going to burst out from my chest as the feeling in my arm returns. It feels as if something just wriggled around underneath my skin.

"We have to be cautious since you got a pretty bad injury from one of the Zierel. Your arm also seems to have some sort of reaction from it but we haven't seen anything like it yet." She answers with a bit of caution in her voice.

"What do you want us to do here?" One of the man ask with a serious tone.

She gestures for them to move back towards the door as she gets closer to me. "Do you have any urge to kill us?" The woman asks with more of a serious tone in her voice.

The urge to kill them? I haven't had anything like that since I woke up in this damn room so why the hell would she even ask me that? This all seems like a bunch of bullshit just to make sure I'm not some monster.

If I was... I would've killed them by now. Just– Just like they killed my whole damn family.

I look down at my arm once again. "I don't have any urges to kill you people. I just want to understand what's going on with my arm right now." I respond with confusion in my voice.

"Your arm is infected from the Zierel. But you aren't turning which is a good sign. You might have some sort of power keeping that from happening." She says with relief as she lifts her mask.

Underneath the mask I could see the blue eyes to match her hair. She was definitely a little bit older than me but it wasn't by much, if we are going off of appearance.

"H-How long was I out?" I ask with some curiosity in my voice. I could also feel the nervousness slipping out as well.

"It has been about a week since we found you. We did all we could to keep you alive but your arm only recently started to act up." She answers with a calm tone in her voice.

She doesn't seem to be freaked out in the slightest after I told her that I didn't have the urge to kill them. But how can she tell I wasn't lying or something?

I feel like a monster could try to impersonate somebody. I don't know if they can but I'm sure it is possible.

"Liam don't you want to do something about this?" An unfamiliar voice asks.

I quickly look away from the woman to see where the source of the voice is coming from but don't see anyone else. Who else could've asked that?
