Chapter 14 - 013: The New Kami Dende

Gohan's life is haunted by two great knots in his heart.

One comes from insufficient firepower.

The other is death itself.

He has, in fact, already died once.

So he doesn't fear death; instead, every extra day feels like profit, and he cherishes it all the more.

Now that he's wished for super regeneration and recovery, his whole mindset has shifted.

This world needs him alive too badly—strictly speaking, his life is no longer his alone.

Greater survivability means more ways to protect those he wants to protect.

It also means more methods to wipe out enemies.

Although, perhaps, maybe, this ability still won't withstand Zeno's erasure or the God of Destruction's power of Destruction.

Nor can it block an Angel's might.

But no matter what, his odds of staying alive have soared—of that there is no doubt.

Gohan felt light-hearted, his thoughts crystal-clear.

He was on the verge of a Breakthrough in Realm.

He sensed that he now stood only one opportunity away from Super Saiyan 2.

In this splendid mood, even the ugly Shenron looked cute to him.

Just then, the dragon in the sky spoke again.

"The second wish has been granted. Do you have another? I can still fulfil one more."

As it spoke, Shenron glanced at Gohan, awe in its eyes.

Though the dragon was colossal and Gohan on the ground no bigger than an ant,

it knew one thing for certain:

Gohan housed terrifying power.

Power so vast that obliterating the whole solar system would be effortless.

In the world of the strong, size is hardly the sole measure of might.

Gohan swept his gaze over every Namekian present, finally resting on the Grand Elder. "Grand Elder, do you have any wishes?"

Elder Moori shook his head. "No, we seldom need Porunga's aid."

With a flicker of hope Gohan asked, "Oh—then let me ask. Is there any way to bring back someone who's been dead for over ten years?"

Elder Moori shook his head again. "Porunga cannot revive those who died naturally or those gone too long, for they have no Physical Body and their Souls have already reincarnated."

"If the body still exists and the Soul remains attached, merely lifeless—now in the Other World or training with Lord Kai—is there still no way?" Gohan pressed.

"Th-there's such a situation?" Elder Moori looked stunned.

It upended his entire worldview.

So Gohan explained the circumstances of Son Goku, Vegeta, and the others to the Grand Elder.

Elder Moori clicked his tongue in amazement.

Still, he shook his head. "Porunga cannot revive the sick, for death by illness counts as natural. As for the scenario you describe… perhaps an upgrade to Porunga could make it possible…"

"I'm truly sorry, Mr. Gohan. I never imagined Earth has suffered so much, even losing Mr. Son Goku—it's deeply regrettable."

An upgrade might do it? The dragon's version too low?

Well, they could patch it later—dragon balls retcon themselves all the time; nothing odd about that.

Truthfully, Gohan had already expected this answer, so he hadn't pinned much hope on it.

Thus, he felt no disappointment now.

There would be other chances.

Besides, those old comrades dead for years might not even want to return.

After all, life in the Other World with Lord Kai seems carefree, with no troubles at all.

Sigh.

So… the third wish. Gohan thought for a moment, then said to Dende, "In that case, Dende, please use the third wish to ask for Yardrat's location."

With the coordinates he could go whenever he liked.

Next he had to find Earth a new Kami, then bring him back to Earth to awaken a new Shenron—top priority.

He couldn't drag a freshly found Kami off to Yardrat for several years of training.

He could afford to wait; Earth clearly could not.

As for why he didn't simply wish for Instant Transmission, Gohan had his own considerations.

Even if Shenron could grant it, without a Yardratian's ki to lock onto he still couldn't Instant Transmit there—and he wanted more from Yardrat than just the technique.

The planet offered far more than Instant Transmission alone.

"The location of Yardrat?"

"Mm, please." Dende nodded and made the wish to Shenron.

The dragon's eyes flashed red, and a stream of data flowed into Gohan's mind—

precisely where Yardrat lay.

Shenron's selling point was speed.

Efficiency off the charts.

Wish granted!

Shenron's voice boomed across the heavens: "All wishes have been fulfilled. Then—farewell."

Golden light burst from its body as the dragon form dispersed.

The seven petrified dragon balls thudded to the ground, carving out deep craters.

Namek's dragon balls differ from Earth's in more than just size.

Earth's dragon balls scatter to the ends of the Earth once the wishes are used.

Old Kami added that hurdle because he feared Earthlings' endless greed and potential exploits.

He never foresaw Bulma inventing the dragon radar.

Namekians are peaceful by nature and seldom use the balls, so Grand Elder set the petrified orbs to remain nearby after a wish.

The stone balls are simply returned to the seven tribes for safekeeping.

After Shenron vanished, the black clouds quickly scattered, and Planet Namek's sky turned clear again within a few breaths; sunlight once more bathed the land.

Gohan stepped in front of the Grand Elder and said, "Grand Elder, I have one more favor to ask."

Elder Moori replied, "Mr. Gohan, you needn't be so polite. Just say it. Helping our benefactor is Planet Namek's honor."

Gohan said, "Heh, it's like this. Earth now needs a guardian, so I'd like to ask the Grand Elder for someone to go to Earth and become its new Kami."

Elder Moori said, "Oh, certainly no problem, though we still need the other party's consent. Do you have a candidate in mind, Mr. Gohan?"

Gohan pointed to Dende beside him. "Mm, Grand Elder, I'd like Dende."

The named Dende looked a little startled.

The Grand Elder smiled at Dende. "Dende, are you willing to go to Earth and be its Kami?"

Dende, still dazed, said, "I… can I?"

"Dende, although your combat ability is average, you're an outstanding member of the Dragon Clan—very well-rounded. Of course you can be Earth's Kami," said Elder Moori.

Gohan added, "Dende, is there some worry that makes you reluctant to go?"

Dende yelped "Ah!" and shook his head hurriedly. "No, no, I'm just afraid I won't measure up."

"It'll be fine; believe in yourself. You heard what the Grand Elder just said—he called you an outstanding Dragon Clan member. Could that be wrong? You'll definitely be an excellent Kami," Gohan said.

"Then I'll give it a try," Dende said.

When a good friend needs help, of course you do it without hesitation.

Feeling needed by others truly is wonderful.

Dende liked that feeling.

At this moment, Dende felt both nervous and happy.

"Hahaha, great!" Gohan laughed heartily.

After a round of pleasantries,

Dende also bade farewell to the Grand Elder and the others.

For a race like the Namekians, who don't need to eat, saying goodbye really is just saying goodbye.

There's no need to spend hours eating and drinking.

Gohan took out a capsule and tossed it onto the open ground; it turned into a spaceship.

Everyone was stunned by the sight.

Without offering much explanation, Gohan waved Dende aboard the ship.

The two boarded; Gohan tapped in Earth's coordinates, hit launch, and the ship vanished into the horizon, streaking into the vast cosmos… Half a month passed just like that.

One day, a spacecraft arrived in Earth's skies and landed smoothly.

It was Gohan and Dende.

They hopped out, and Gohan stowed the ship again.

After putting it away, Gohan first used Qi to scan Earth; once he confirmed everything was safe, he said to Dende, "Let's go, Dende—first stop, the Lookout."

"Mm, okay." Dende nodded.

The two rose into the air and flew toward the Lookout.

Moments later they arrived.

Almost at the same time, Trunks and Bulma showed up as well.

Trunks had sensed Gohan's Qi and rushed over with Bulma.

Seeing Gohan, Trunks ran over in delight, looked him up and down, and exclaimed excitedly,

"Brother Gohan, you're finally back! This is awesome—wow, your hand's regrown! And, oh my gosh, you've even got a tail—so cool, so cool, so incredibly cool!"

Gohan ruffled his hair and laughed. "Brat, it's only been a month—when did you become such a chatterbox?"

"I haven't! I'm just so happy," Trunks said with a grin.

"Mr. Gohan," Mr. Popo greeted from the side.

Gohan smiled and nodded to him.

"Gohan, you've gotten handsome—no scar on your face, left arm regrown, and you look taller too. Haha, I declare you the most handsome man I've ever seen!"

Bulma put her hands on her hips and laughed, as if she'd turned back into her self from ten-plus years ago.

Then she curiously looked at Dende beside Gohan. "So this is the new Kami you found?"

Gohan chuckled. "Yep, Auntie Bulma, actually you've met him before."

"Whaa, really?" Bulma studied Dende in surprise.

Unfortunately, Namekians all look as if carved from the same mold, and she couldn't recall who this Dende was at all.

The only one she could picture was Piccolo.

Dende looked a bit embarrassed; he still remembered Bulma, though.

Over ten years had passed, but Bulma had kept herself in great shape and hadn't changed much—just become more mature.

Gohan smiled and introduced, "Let me do the honors: this is Dende, the new Kami I specially brought from Planet Namek."

"Auntie Bulma, back on Planet Namek, the Namekian kid who went through thick and thin with us—he could cast healing Spells—this is him."

"Oh, now that you mention it, I remember!" Bulma exclaimed in realization.

"Hello, Miss Bulma, long time no see," Dende greeted.

"Hello, hello," Bulma replied.

Meeting an old friend made her very happy.

"Dende, this is Trunks—Auntie Bulma's son and also my Disciple—and this is Mr. Popo, the Lookout's guardian. He'll assist you from now on," Gohan introduced them one by one.

"Hello, pleased to meet you all," Dende said politely, nodding.

Trunks was equally polite, nodding back. "Hello, Brother Dende."

Mr. Popo bowed to Dende. "Greetings, Lord Kami. Just call me Popo from now on."
