The Karma Trial arena lay beneath the capital.
Ancient.
Blood-soaked.
Alive.
Runes ignited as Ryo was thrown into the center.
Across from him—
A summoned construct emerged.
A Royal Execution Beast.
B-Rank body.
A-Rank strength.
Endless stamina.
Ryo felt the heat rising inside his chest.
Max Bone… answer me.
Nothing.
The restraints held.
Above the arena—
Kenji watched.
Every instinct screamed at him to intervene.
Aiko grabbed his sleeve.
"If you move," she whispered,
"they'll kill him anyway."
Toya's fists trembled.
Ryo was thrown back—bones cracking.
Blood spilled.
The crowd watched.
This was entertainment.
Kenji lowered his head.
If this is the law… then I'll break it someday.
Suddenly—
The restraints flickered.
Just for a second.
Ryo felt it.
He roared.
Max Bone surged—not fully, not cleanly—but enough.
His body hardened.
He charged.
Stone shattered.
The beast fell.
Silence.
Then—
The runes died.
Ryo collapsed.
Alive.
The crowd erupted—half in shock, half in disappointment.
King Itsuki stood.
"The trial is complete," he declared.
"Ryo Takemura lives."
Kenji exhaled for the first time in minutes.
But the king's gaze sharpened.
"However," Itsuki continued,
"this team is now under direct royal observation."
Yumi looked away.
She knew what that meant.
Leashes.
Later, in the medical wing—
Ryo lay unconscious.
Aiko sat beside him, exhausted.
Toya leaned against the wall, smiling faintly.
"He's tough," he said.
"Knew he'd live."
Kenji stood apart.
Chairman Daku approached quietly.
"You crossed a line today," Daku said.
Kenji replied,
"I saw the line.
I didn't like where it was drawn."
Daku smiled faintly.
"Good."
He leaned closer.
"The stronger you become," Daku whispered,
"the more this Kingdom will fear you."
Kenji's eyes hardened.
"Then they should."
Far away—
In darkness untouched by law—
A man smiled as news reached him.
"So," Toki murmured,
"the Kingdom has found its flame."
His eyes gleamed.
"I wonder how it burns when crushed."
