"I've got you."

Those were Shizuka's words when she saw the perfect moment to unleash her new attack, born out of sheer desperation.

"Whisper Release: Shikkōnin no Shijima (The Executioner's Silence)"

For a millisecond, nothing happened. Kenshin was about to deliver the final blow to finish Baki who tried to block.

But that never came. Kenshin suddenly froze, standing motionless for a few seconds allowing Baki to stand up and step back.

Kenshin slowly turned his head toward Shizuka's battered figure, his eyes burning with pure rage.

And he had every right to be furious because half his body, along with his bone armor, had been cut in a perfectly clean slice.

Shizuka's cut struck directly from the neck-chest junction down to the waist.

Letting Kenshin's organs spill out onto the ground as he collapsed leaving silence for Baki and Shizuka, who also fell back to the ground.

"That was truly dangerous a silent cut capable of piercing a Kaguya's bone armor. You have to fear her," Baki said with a sigh wiping a wound on his face.

He then walked toward Shizuka and looked at Yashamaru who returned walking with half his clothes frozen and one arm stiff.

A short time earlier – Yashamaru vs the Yuki clan ninja

The presence of the Yuki clan ninja, Hakuya, had turned the battlefield into aphenomenon rarely seen in a desert: snow. Yashamaru, with controlled but visible breath in the freezing air, hid behind a dune of sand solidified by frost.

His usually agile fingers were starting to go numb.

"You can hide in the sand, Suna rat, but you'll start freezing and die slowly," Hakuya's voice echoed around the area.

"Ice Release: bird Blizzard!"

From the fog emerged dozens of carved ice birds. They didn't fly in a straight line; they glided erratically, circling Yashamaru's dune.

He reacted instantly extending his green chakra threads, creating a defensive web around himself.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The threads cut the birds, but every time an ice bird was destroyed, it released a freezing air blast that clung to Yashamaru's threads.

"This is getting complicated," Yashamaru murmured seeing how his threads, his main weapon, were starting to gain weight. Not only that the cold chakra ran along the threads all the way to his hands, beginning to freeze them.

Hakuya gave him no time to think. He appeared performing hand seals with just one hand, an elite skill of many ninjas with a lot of ninjutsus.

"Ice Release: Ice Pillars!"

The ground beneath Yashamaru exploded. Massive ice columns surged upward with the intent to impale him.

Yashamaru leaped backward but while he was in the air, Hakuya was already waiting with another jutsu ready unleashing his full arsenal.

"Ice Release: Ice Spikes!"

Yashamaru used his threads to propel himself against an ice pillar spinning in the air to dodge the spikes but one of them, infused with massive chakra, managed to graze his left shoulder.

The cold was so intense he felt no pain just absolute freezing. In seconds, from the shoulder to the fingertips, his left arm was covered in a bluish frost layer.

The limb was completely paralyzed, hanging like dead weight.

"A ninja like you who can't use his hands will end up as a corpse," Hakuya mocked descending from the dune with elegance.

"I've frozen the chakra channels in that arm. If you try to force chakra through, your veins will burst like shattered crystal," Hakuya explained.

Yashamaru fell to his knees, gasping. The cold was beginning to affect his internal organs.

He looked at his frozen arm it was white, with no trace of circulation. However, in his eyes there was no panic only the next move he had to make.

"You're right," Yashamaru whispered his voice barely audible.

"For someone like me who uses threads maybe. But that would only happen to someone who relies solely on them."

Hakuya frowned annoyed by Yashamaru's perseverance despite being unable to use his threads.

"You're still talking? Die! Ice Release: ice Dragon Blizzard!"

An ice dragon-shaped tornado roared from the Yuki's hands. It was a jōnin-level technique meant to freeze the opponent solid.

The roar of the ice dragon echoed across the coast lifting a blizzard that threatened to bury Yashamaru under tons of compacted ice.

Hakuya smiled arrogantly considering the fight over. No one survived a direct hit of that magnitude he had already used it on many unfortunate ninjas and all of them are dead.

However, Yashamaru didn't try to flee. With his right hand the only one still responding he performed a single seal: Tiger. But it wasn't to summon threads.

He concentrated a massive amount of chakra in the center of his circulatory system forcing his heart to beat at a violent frequency.

"Iryō Ninjutsu: Sōshōtsu (Medical Art: Thermal Reanimation)" Yashamaru whispered.

Instead of projecting chakra outward, he collapsed it inward. His blood vessels glowed with intense green under his skin. In an act of extreme surgical control, Yashamaru overheated his own bloodstream to combat the induced hypothermia.

The frost on his left arm began to crack not from physical force, but from the pressure of steam emanating from his pores.

Just as the ice dragon was about to devour him, Yashamaru propelled himself forward. His speed wasn't that of an injured ninja it was that of a human projectile.

He pierced through the side of the ice dragon suffering cuts from the ice but his body temperature was so high that the freezing air evaporated before touching his skin.

Hakuya's eyes widened in horror seeing how his greatest technique was dodged and shattered.

"Impossible! Your channels should be destroyed!" Hakuya shouted denying what he had just witnessed.

"As a medic, I know every inch of my chakra network," Yashamaru replied appearing in front of the Yuki in a blink. "If you freeze them, I simply find an alternative route through my knowledge."

Yashamaru didn't draw a kunai or extend threads. His hands glowed with the emerald aura of Chakra Scalpel (Chakra no Mesu).

Hakuya tried to raise an ice wall but Yashamaru was faster. With precision only a trained medic could achieve, he struck four specific points on the Kiri ninja's chest and neck.

They weren't heavy blows. They were surgical grazes that pierced the skin without leaving external traces.

"It's over," Yashamaru said stopping behind his opponent.

Hakuya tried to form a seal for one last counterattack but his fingers wouldn't move.

Suddenly, he felt his body no longer belonged to him. His vision blurred and his legs gave out.

"What… what did you do to me?" Hakuya stammered falling to his knees as the ice dragon behind them dissolved into harmless dust.

"I severed all the main nerves that make your body obey you," Yashamaru explained his breathing returning to normal as the green glow on his body faded.

Hakuya tried to scream and move but only a involuntary spasm came from his mouth. He was completely helpless trapped in a prison of his own nervous system, which felt worse than a quick death by threads.

"As I said before threads are just a tool. My true power is the medical field. I know many ways to end lives but the fastest and least painful is with threads," Yashamaru said calmly.

With a quick and merciful motion, Yashamaru struck a vital point on the back of Hakuya's neck leaving him unconscious and permanently sealing his chakra flow.

Silence returned. Yashamaru clutched his shoulder staggering slightly from extreme exhaustion and thirsty.

The use of high-level medical techniques to combat the Hyōton had drained his reservesbut the threat had been neutralized.

He began walking heavily across the sand leaving the frozen battlefield behind heading toward where he felt the air disturbance only Shizuka's attack could have caused.

When he finally arrived and saw Baki helping the girl, Yashamaru let out a sigh of relief though his torn clothes and bloodied arm told the story of a fight that nearly cost him his life.

Seconds later, a Suna ninja squad arrived as reinforcements now that everything was over.

"You're late with the reinforcements," Yashamaru said with a tired smile to Baki and Shizuka.

"Same here at least we survived," Baki replied.

With the reinforcements securing all information and corpses and leaving everything clean the trio of ninjas returned to the main camp to heal their wounds.

On the northern border

Things were going from bad to worse and what they didn't want to happen finally did: Suna retreated from the Land of Earth's territory.

This was due to the difference in shinobi numbers where Iwa could have the largest armies, Suna was severely lacking. And not only that the money needed to stay active was running out.

The Kazekage tried to get more from the daimyō but he refused, saying they hadn't achieved anything with the previous amount and that they should be grateful for what was given.

This left Suna in a position to retreat and remain silent until another opportunity arose.

With Suna's withdrawal and victory for Iwa, they didn't hesitate to move all or most of their ninjas toward the Land of Grass.

To invade it and use it as a bridge to attack Konoha putting things back to the same decade-old war.

Everyone against konoha except Suna, who remained in their lands defending against attackers.

With Daigo he was receiving all the information from Isho the elephant who was the elephants' messenger.

(Well, it was to be expected. Though Suna has improved thanks to having more talents and without the Kazekage's death, they're still not enough to beat the other great villages) Daigo thought recalling all the details.

"Isho, thank you very much for the information. You can stay here don't go back to Sunagakure," Daigo said to the elephant who nodded, though a little confused.

"But Daigo, how will I keep you informed if I stay here?" Isho asked.

"It doesn't matter. I have to return. Even though Suna has improved, they need my help to gain something in this war. I have to go back."

"But what about your training?"

"Don't worry I have the basics, which was what I needed most. I'll come back after the war to continue training with all of you. So don't worry I'll bring things from Suna when I return," Daigo replied to Isho.

"I understand. Thank you very much, Daigo. I hope everything goes as you want. Remember you can summon me even though I don't fight. I can help you move or with other things."

"Of course I'll summon you if I need your help. You were the last one I needed to say goodbye to."

With everything finished and after half a year of training the basics of Yin and Yang chakra Daigo performed the summoning seals to return to his village.

And in his former position appeared a puff of smoke for seconds later, no one was there.

In Suna

Daigo touching the familiar sandy ground did the first thing that came to mind: take a deep breath before using shunshin without wasting time.

Arriving at the Kazekage's tower he didn't wait to ask permission and entered the room but found no one.

That left only one other place the meeting room. And he was right upon arriving, he noticed two ANBU guards standing at the door.

"You can't enter they're in a meeting," one of the ANBU said.

Daigo ignored him and kicked the door open finding all the eyes of the ninjas inside turning toward him.

Looking at everyone present, Daigo nodded to himself walking without saying anything to an empty chair near the Kazekage and sitting down to observe the meeting though it seemed he wouldn't be able to enjoy it in silence.

"Daigo, it seems during your training you lost the respect you always showed," Rasa said somewhat annoyed by Daigo's way of entering.

Other advisors and ninjas seemed to support the idea voicing their parts.

"I haven't lost my respect. It's that while I wasn't in the village, it seems you forgot how to be shinobi," Daigo replied while looking at Rasa and all the other ninjas.

"Welcome back, Daigo. What are those words for? Even as my disciple, you don't have permission to come in and do whatever you want," the Kazekage interrupted both looking at Daigo with an iron gaze.

That look let him know he was serious, but Daigo didn't give a damn because he had to tell them things as they were.

Daigo didn't respond right away. He stood up and walked to the center of the room.

"First, I'll introduce myself to those who still don't know me. I'm Daigo the future Kazekage of the Village Hidden in the Sand. And I'm going to tell you why I'm disappointed in all of you."
