———————————————————
On the eastern coast of the Land of Wind, things had remained quite active for both Kiri and Suna.
With the help of Todo and Haru, Suna had gained the advantage over the Kiri ninjas, as the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist had stayed on the defensive or on other battlefields.
But that was expected from jōnin-level or higher ninjas, or well-known ones. Among the other ninjas, several names were starting to stand out.
Especially three. The first was Museifu Shizuka with her Whisper Release, she was perfect for turning the enemy's Kirigakure no Jutsu against them. Her invisible winds sliced through anyone in the mist without them realizing who was responsible.
The second was Baki with his swordsmanship and Fūton, he was another problem when he wasn't on the field alongside Shizuka. His wind techniques cleared away all the mist, and his speed and talent made him stand out above the rest.
And finally, Yashamaru though no one knew much about him, he was a shinobi who preferred to stay in the shadows as an ANBU. But in this war, he decided to participate on the front lines.
With his medical skills combined with his lethal assassination style using chakra threads, he stood out to both villages one seeing him as a strong ninja for their side, and the other as a stone in their path that had to be eliminated.
Now, with Shizuka she was on guard duty along with the two men, who had been placed in a squad by Todo.
"Shizuka, you're not falling behind on your medical training, right?" Yashamaru asked the oldest of the three.
"No, Yashamaru. Though I'm busy improving my Whisper Release even more, you know I appreciate your help," Shizuka replied while maintaining guard.
"That's good but don't forget it could save your life, your friends if something happen," Yashamaru said while cleaning his weapons especially his medical tools.
"I didn't think someone called the red Web of Suna would care about healing," Baki said from his side the quietest of the group, preferring to focus on the mission rather than chat.
Yashamaru didn't flinch. He raised one hand and, with an almost imperceptible movement, extended ten threads of dull green chakra. The threads vibrated, cutting through the passing desert air before disappearing.
"Well, before I created this thread technique, I wanted to be a puppeteer but my talent wasn't good enough. So I learned medical jutsu, and with that I was able to create my main technique, Baki," Yashamaru explained to Baki who nodded, understanding more.
Though the conversation could have continued, it was interrupted because the temperature dropped drastically. Shizuka tensed up, closing her eyes to sharpen her senses.
"They're coming," Shizuka whispered as the fog now expanded along with a powerful cold coming from it.
"Baki, prepare the jutsu," Yashamaru ordered his voice shifting from warm medic to the coldness of an ANBU commander.
"Shizuka, cover Baki's rear guard while I cover the vanguard. Fire the signal flare for reinforcements."
A group of ten Kiri ninjas emerged from the fog, armed with serrated katanas and launching water jutsu.
"Water Release: Pressure Pillars!" the attackers shouted. High-speed water columns flew toward the Suna group.
Baki reacted first. With a swift motion, he unsheathed his sword and unleashed a blast of compressed wind.
"Wind Style: Air Sword!" Baki's wind not only dispersed the water pillars but created a tunnel of visibility in the fog revealing the attackers.
Shizuka seized the moment. Her hands moved in quick seals.
"Whisper Release: Thousand Invisible Cuts!" The air around the Kiri ninjas began to vibrate with a deadly frequency. Without seeing any attack, the enemies felt their uniforms and then their skin being torn by blades of air that made no sound and were completely invisible.
"Be careful they're invisible cuts from the Museifu clan! Move fast and you'll dodge them!" shouted the squad leader dodging along with most of the ninjas.
While this was happening, Yashamaru disappeared from his position. The Mist ninjas accustomed to being the ones hunting in the fog suddenly felt trapped.
Yashamaru moved through the fog as if he were part of it. His hands danced in the air, weaving a three-dimensional web of chakra threads that spread across the entire battlefield.
A Kiri ninja tried to leap toward Shizuka but mid-air, his body stopped dead. He looked down and saw his wrists, ankles, and neck surrounded by nearly imperceptible green threads.
"It's nothing personal," Yashamaru's voice whispered right behind his ear.
With a sharp tug of his fingers, Yashamaru activated his technique: Chakra Threads: Flesh Puppet. The Kiri ninja let out a choked scream as his own arms fell to the ground severed along with the rest of his limbs.
Yashamaru continued until he found another group and did the same though the only difference was that the previously strong and flexible threads were now frozen, making it impossible for Yashamaru to control them.
"Hmm… I think that's enough with your shit threads from Suna. I'll freeze you to death," a Kiri ninja said his attire slightly different, with a snowflake clan symbol.
"A Yuki clan ninja. Looks like Kiri came prepared this time sending clan ninjas," Yashamaru replied to the ninja who didn't hesitate to form hand seals.
"Ice Release: Hissatsu Hyōshō (Ice Release: Ice Spikes)," the ninja said as the moisture around him began to change shape and many ice spikes appeared then launched toward Yashamaru.
Yashamaru seeing the attack started running, dodging everything possible. For the ones he couldn't, he cut them with his threads.
Looking to his sides, he tried to see where the others were though he noticed each one seemed to be facing stronger opponents.
With Shizuka she had encountered an enemy who was the perfect counter for someone like her
"A Kaguya clan member I didn't expect to find one here," Shizuka said launching two cuts toward him, which were destroyed by the bone sword of the Kaguya ninja.
"Same here I thought your clan had gone extinct after the Second War. Though it looks like you're the last one left and you're the training I needed to make my bones even stronger," the ninja said charging toward Shizuka.
Who nimbly dodged while counterattacking with her kunai wrapped in chakra.
"Don't think I'll end up like the other members of my clan. I'll finish you and my Whisper will become sharp enough to destroy your bones."
With that said, Shizuka didn't take long to form hand seals where gusts of cuts headed toward the Kaguya who, with a murderous smile, crossed his arms.
Bones sprouted from his arms and the rest of his body creating a bone armor that made Shizuka's cuts unable to pierce through.
Not enough, the bone warrior now began moving against Shizuka walking toward her.
Not letting that discourage her, quite the opposite she used more of her chakra to increase the size and sharpness of the air cuts.
Though for the Kaguya that wasn't enough he felt no pain and after taking all the wind slashes and got close he didn't let her get away grabbed Shizuka by the face slamming her into the ground.
Forcing the air from Shizuka's lungs out violently no a second later she felt herself grabbed by the feet and lifted into the air.
And then slammed back into the ground even harder feeling her body protest from the impact.
Though the ninja's laugh grew with every blow Shizuka received.
"Hahahaha! It's fun smashing you against the ground but I'm bored of you now. You're a disgrace to your clan and your village. If I were you, I'd have killed myself but I'll save you the trouble of doing it." He said before pointing ono of his finger at her
"Finger-Piercing Bullets,"
The bone projectile whistled through the air straight toward the girl's forehead but before it could hit, a blade wrapped in a whirlwind of wind chakra deflected it with a gust.
The bone shot toward a nearby rock pulverizing on contact.
"Looks like I arrived just in time," Baki said appearing like a flicker in front of his teammate.
His clothes were somewhat torn after finishing off his previous opponents but his gaze was as sharp as his katana.
"Huh? Who the hell are you?" The Ninja said growled frustrated at losing his prey.
"Let me finish my prey I was going to go for you after mopping the floor with this clan disgrace."
Baki didn't flinch at his word. He helped Shizuka get up just a centimeter before gently pushing her back with his foot indicating she should stay out of range.
"It's a shame I arrived early and you couldn't finish Shizuka. Now I have to finish you but first, I'd like to know your name," Baki said lowering his center of gravity and placing his hand on the hilt of his sword entering Suna's quick-draw stance.
"I'm Kenshin Kaguya. Don't die too fast, desert brat. I want to feel how my bones break your steel and your skull!"
Kenshin didn't wait. He charged forward with explosive speed unusual for someone with such heavy armor. From his palms sprouted two long curved blades: Crescent bone Moons.
His movements were erratic and acrobatic spinning on his own axis like a deadly top.
Baki unsheathed. The sound of metal against bone created a bluish spark. Every time his katana clashed with Kenshin's extensions, Baki's arm vibrated from the extreme density of the bone.
"If that piece of disgrace couldn't cut through my bones, what makes you think you can? You'll end up just like her, brat!" Kenshin shouted launching a thrust that Baki dodged by millimeters, feeling the bone graze his tactical vest.
"Maybe you'd be right if we fought the same way but I'm different from her," Baki replied aiming at a point.
Baki spun quickly and channeled his Fūton chakra into the blade.
"Wind Release: Vacuum Slash."
The cut unlike Shizuka's was visible compressed air struck Kenshin's shoulder full force. Kenshin reacted. The Bone Armor beneath his skin absorbed most of the impact but the pressure was such that the Kaguya was dragged several meters back, leaving two deep furrows in the earth.
Kenshin looked at his shoulder. His uniform was torn, and a small line of blood peeked through a crack in his bone protection. His smile became even more deranged.
"Yes! That's it! Give me more of that red color that heats up my blood!" From his elbows and knees, more sharp points sprouted.
Kenshin began running again but this time not head-on. He started bouncing off rocks and the ice pillars the Yuki ninja had left on the battlefield turning into a spiky projectile.
Baki had to keep moving using wind bursts under his feet to increase his speed escape of his attack.
While the duel between Baki and Kenshin
escalated, Shizuka desperately tried to get back on her feet. Her ears rang, and the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.
Seeing Baki fight for her ignited a feeling of helplessness along with Kenshin's words that almost made her give up but she wasn't going to die here.
"I still have many things to do and I have to see Daigo become Kazekage," she thought clenching her teeth as her hands searched for support in the sand.
"If Baki managed to hold on, I just have to make my winds sharp enough like a sound wave capable of destroying everything in its path."
Getting up though her whole body was trembling she pointed toward Kenshin's figure with her fingers and focused her chakra and Whisper Release not on a gust of cuts, but on an infinitesimal point at the tip of her fingers. She observed Kenshin's movements.
The Kaguya was a walking fortress but every time he spun, there was a fraction of a second where his joints were exposed to allow movement. Because if He close all opening he couldn't move the way he was doing.
"Baki…" Shizuka whispered though the wind carried her words away.
Baki who had his own plan in mind while dodging the bone-crazy lunatic threw his sword into the air. A move that seemed insane but while Kenshin jumped to take advantage of the supposed opening, Baki performed hand seals at blinding speed: Ram → Hare → Snake.
"Wind Release: Lower Cyclone Pressure."
A vortex of air surged from the sand striking Kenshin though it did nothing to him. It was enough for Baki to recover his sword in the air and charge toward Kenshin who was airborne aiming directly at the neck-shoulder joint, where the bone armor had a hollow point since it couldn't cover it or his head wouldn't be able to turn.
Kenshin reacted feeling death touch his soul. From his spine, a long, flexible bone sprouted like a tail: Beast Bone Form Complete.
The bone tail wrapped around Baki's leg mid-flight pulling him toward the ground with brutal force.
Catching Baki by surprise feeling his opportunity defeated by Kenshin tail.
"I've got you, desert rat!" Kenshin roared preparing his other hand for a lethal strike.
Baki crashed into the ground but didn't let go of his sword. Sand flew everywhere hiding both combatants' positions from everyone except one person who smiled.
"I've got you."
