The silence after Cassian's declaration was deafening.
People were whispering. Frantically. Behind fans, behind hands, not even trying to be subtle.
"The Northern King is interested in the former slave—"
"A scandal—"
"But she's engaged to the Duke—"
"This is better than any theater production—"
The Emperor cleared his throat awkwardly, his diplomatic smile looking strained. "King Cassian, my daughter is already engaged to Duke Lucien Asterion. The announcement was made just last night."
Cassian's eyes darkened for just a moment before his smile returned, wider and more challenging than before. "Oh? Then I shall have to prove my worth and fight for the Princess's hand. I do enjoy a good competition."
"That is not—" The Emperor started, then stopped. He covered his face with one hand and sighed deeply. "Next!"
Lord Adrian stepped forward eagerly, presenting his rabbits with a flourish and a bow. "For you, Your Highness. A humble offering."
