Nobles migrated toward the long tables laden with food. I found myself seated at one of the main tables with multiple dishes in front of me, venison from Cassian's stag, rabbit from Adrian's catch, the deer from the Duke's hunt.
Three guys gave me stuff. This is.…..a lot.
I started eating. The food was incredible, perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented.
Around me, nobles chatted and laughed. And just besides me, Cassian was just staring. With this soft, almost loving expression.
Oh.
Oh no.
He's catching feelings. Real feelings.
This is getting complicated.
Then the Duke appeared, settling into the seat on my other side without asking for my permission.
"I would like to speak with my betrothed," he said, his voice tight.
I looked at him, and then turned my face away. "I do not want to speak with you."
Cassian smiled. "You heard the lady."
Lucien's jaw clenched. "He cannot be trusted, Roxanne."
