Chapter 106: Depriving You of Your Freedom
Seeing how furious Shingetsu was, Otonashi Chiya quickly explained, "Don't worry, Reze didn't escape. I've captured her."
"Captured her?" Shingetsu asked in surprise. "Where did you take her?"
She had only seen Reze vanish into thin air; she hadn't even noticed when Chiya made his move. However, thinking back, there was indeed a familiar ripple of spatial distortion around Reze, much like the one Chiya used when he bypassed her Absolute Defense before.
From the looks of it, this was another application of Chiya's Devil powers.
"I won't say exactly where, but I'm going to have a little chat with her soon. Let's head back to the department in the meantime," Chiya said to Shingetsu. "There are no devils nearby; this was clearly a fake mission. It's highly probable that Reze is an assassin sent by the military high command. Otherwise, the department wouldn't make such a rookie mistake as sending us to a location where there isn't even a trace of a devil."
As he spoke, Chiya and Shingetsu began to leave the area. He didn't care about the surrounding wreckage; after all, Reze was the one who blew it up, not him.
"The high command? Why would they send an assassin after you?" Shingetsu was bewildered.
"Perhaps they think I'm too powerful and view me as a threat," Chiya speculated.
There was no other logical explanation. He had never offended the Soviet military; in fact, working at the Leningrad department meant he was technically doing their work.
"Those damn bastards!" Shingetsu's face darkened instantly. She had dealt with the high command enough to know exactly who the top figures were. After what happened today, she was starting to harbor a killing intent toward those old fossils.
"Calm down. Let me talk to Reze first." Chiya noticed the murderous glint in Shingetsu's cold eyes. This was a matter between him and the high command, and he didn't want her getting caught in the crossfire.
Moreover, there were likely other Hybrids within the military. There were many children locked in the "Secret Rooms" for the modification project; Reze probably wasn't the only one. While Shingetsu's martial arts were formidable, her Absolute Defense wasn't truly invincible, and facing a Hybrid would still be dangerous for her.
"Alright," Shingetsu calmed herself, deciding to see what Chiya could get out of Reze first.
Meanwhile, inside the Kamui Dimension:
Staring at this completely alien space, Reze had yet to deactivate her Bomb Hybrid form. She immediately dropped into a combat stance, wary of anything that might happen.
The more unfamiliar the environment, the easier it is to feel a sense of unknown fear—especially in this gloomy Kamui space, where there was nothing but endless gray blocks and a suffocating silence.
"Miss Reze, I think it's time you told me the truth."
Reze suddenly heard Chiya's voice, but she couldn't see him. She looked around, but there wasn't a soul in sight; the voice seemed to emanate from the void itself.
"Master, where is this place? I'm a little scared..."
Even now, Reze still had the nerve to use a joking tone.
"It doesn't matter where this is. All you need to know is that without my permission, you can never leave," Chiya's voice transmitted flatly. "So, tell me everything. If you're honest with me, I might be in a good enough mood to let you go."
"It doesn't look like I have much of a choice, does it...?"
Reze didn't doubt his words. She had already observed her surroundings; this alien world had no visible horizon, only countless gray pillars, seemingly completely cut off from the outside world. Though she didn't expect Chiya to actually let her out, she had no other option but to come clean; she couldn't just sit here and wait for death.
Reze decided there was no point in continuing to waste blood maintaining her Hybrid form, so she shifted back into her human shape.
"The real goal of my mission wasn't to assassinate you. It was to incapacitate you—preferably knock you unconscious—and bring you back to the military to be modified into a war machine like me, to be used by the state."
"The high command believes you are too powerful and considers you a threat. Specifically, they aren't willing to see Japan's strength grow."
Reze laid out most of the high command's true intentions, only slightly avoiding the term "Secret Room." Most things were fine to say, but the "Secret Room" was a top-priority secret; as an operative, she couldn't reveal it even upon death.
What Reze didn't realize was that Chiya, possessing "God's perspective," immediately connected the dots to the Secret Room. Being brought back to be modified into a war machine like Reze—that clearly meant forcing him to undergo the Hybrid experiment.
Chiya judged that Reze wasn't lying, as this perfectly explained her previous acting.
"So, you didn't want to kill me, but you wanted me to be modified into a war machine completely deprived of freedom, just like you, is that it?" Chiya questioned coldly.
"..."
Reze's expression changed slightly. Chiya's words had struck her deepest, most painful wound. Her greatest dream was freedom, but from the moment she was locked in the "Secret Room" by the Soviet military as a child, she was destined to never know it.
"...Yes."
After a moment of silence, Reze admitted it. In that instant, she actually felt a flicker of guilt. After all, who would want to be deprived of their freedom forever? But she was not her own master; she couldn't disobey orders.
"I have no reason to live anyway. Master, just kill me," Reze said, actively seeking death, as she saw no hope of escape. "Even though Hybrids are immortal, there are ways to keep them from resurrecting. Just kill me and don't provide blood or a 'trigger' restart."
"Then leave my body locked in here forever. That way, the military can't find me to bring me back to life."
On the surface, Reze seemed fine, but this Kamui dimension was actually triggering her PTSD; it felt as if she had been returned to that "Secret Room" where she was experimented on day after day. Since she could never leave, she felt she might as well die. Surviving here was simply moving from the military's cage to another.
"No."
Chiya refused ruthlessly. "Wouldn't killing you now be letting you off too easy?"
"Since you wanted to deprive me of my freedom, I'll return the favor."
"Therefore, I order you to kill every member of the military high command."
At that moment, Reze looked up into the void and saw what appeared to be a pair of Mangekyo Sharingan. Deep killing intent radiated from those blood-red pupils shaped like Kamui swirls!
