"I'm sorry, sister."
"Thanks. He assured me that James remains safe, that he's still himself." A single tear traces down my face while a fragile smile tugs at my mouth. "He's still James, existing in some kind of suspended animation that prevents the demon from reaching him."
"That sounds hopeful."
"I believe so." I stand and shake my head. "The entire experience left me bewildered. I think Dmitri is..." I struggle to complete my thought. He's the God of the Underworld, yet appeared so remarkably human and ordinary. "...reliable," I conclude. "I did learn the specifics of Kevin's bargain. Essentially, he wanted Dmitri to remove the Horsemen from our burden and managed to secure three centuries of their imprisonment. After that, Dmitri has complete freedom to handle them as he sees fit."
Gideon's eyes grow wide. "I don't desire death and chaos for my bloodline, but knowing I'll be gone by then almost provides relief. Which is disturbing, I realize."
