"What's big brother doing...?"
Vya tiptoed, copying Mei's posture as she peered outside.
Oh, it's that tall brother. Vya remembered the light surrounding Kevin—a bright, shining white.
Who would have thought he knew Sister Mei.
It was quite heartwarming, really, how she'd gone from barely remembering anyone at first to now recognizing almost everyone.
"Huh..." Mei suddenly lowered her voice, looking at Vya with surprise. "You didn't run into those monsters?"
Mei was taken aback.
"I did. Those are... Honkai Beasts."
Vya answered truthfully. Not only had she encountered them, she'd eaten several too.
The ones she'd had not long ago left a deep impression. Their taste... mmm, something like burnt marshmallows, with a crispy shell hiding a flowing purple energy inside.
Absolutely delicious!
"Honkai Beasts...? Is that what those monsters are called?"
"Yep, that's what Sister Mobius said."
"Then—"
A sudden BOOM interrupted Mei. Instinctively, she pulled Vya closer, deciding to shelve the question for now.
If Vya had made it here, she must have avoided danger.
In the distance, Kevin had already dealt with that Chariot-class Herrscher Beast.
"Mei!"
Once he'd finished off the Chariot-class, Kevin hurried over.
He hoped Mei was okay...
"Kevin, over here...!"
Mei called out softly, her voice tinged with unmistakable relief.
Thank goodness, as long as she was safe.
Kevin rushed over in a few quick strides. The moment they saw each other, they embraced tightly, completely overlooking Vya standing to the side.
Mei's face was buried in Kevin's shoulder, his hand gently patting her back...
Vya just watched them curiously, noticing that their auras showed traces of blending, though not very distinctly.
...
"And this child is...?"
"Vya, a little sister I knew once."
"Hello, big brother~" Vya greeted him sweetly.
"But it's so dangerous here. How did she get here?"
His brow was furrowed, blue eyes filled with concern.
"She said she's looking for her sister. They might have gotten separated by accident..."
After a brief discussion, being kind-hearted people, neither Kevin nor Mei could just leave her.
"Vya, this is Kevin. How about you come with us from now on?"
Mei offered a gentle smile.
Kevin beside her waved with a friendly grin. He didn't recognize Vya.
They'd only met once, after all; it was normal he wouldn't remember.
"So it's Brother Kevin. Hello~"
"Let's hurry. This place is dangerous. Stay behind me." Kevin remained alert, scanning their surroundings.
Dangerous? But there were so many tasty things here.
Vya mused to herself...
But... she felt a little conflicted.
If she went to find her sister, she might lose Sister Mei. How about taking Sister Mei and Brother Kevin along to find her sister instead! ~(˶╹ꇴ╹˶)~
"How about Vya takes you to find Sister Elysia?"
The little girl suggested with a smile.
"Do you know where your sister is?"
Kevin asked.
"Vya knows!"
"Right over there!"
Vya pointed in a direction—precisely the way Kevin and Mei had come from not long ago.
Mei glanced that way. "...Vya, how about you come with us first, alright?"
"Okay..."
She could see her sister's light clearly from here. She could go anytime, but it seemed impolite to go off alone...
Seeing the girl agree, the two adults relaxed.
Before leaving, Mei glanced back at the Honkai Beast corpse.
Fear was there, of course, but what Mei felt more now was excitement. She thirsted for the unknown... yearned to conquer it.
Vya looked too. She swallowed discreetly. Must be careful. Just digging in straight away wouldn't be cute at all...
Must remember what Sister said.
The trio set off, feeling their way forward. Strangely, they didn't encounter any more Honkai Beasts.
It was as if the beasts were avoiding them.
Occasional roars echoed in the distance, but none drew near.
"Actually... I've seen Brother Kevin before."
"Huh? You've seen me?"
Even Mei was surprised.
"Yep, yep! Last time when Sister Eden was singing, I saw Brother Kevin with another brother~"
"Is that so? You have quite the memory."
Kevin awkwardly scratched his white hair. He certainly didn't remember.
But it was nothing... probably just a coincidence.
Night fell quietly. The three found a relatively intact residential building to stay in for the night; the area seemed safe enough.
"Let's rest here for the day..."
"Mm, it's been a long day."
Kevin forced a smile, but the shadow in his eyes lingered.
Today's upheaval had been too sudden—the monsters appearing in class, classmates scattering in panic, the endless screams on the streets... These images clung to his mind like nightmares.
Disaster was always like this, capable of striking a devastating blow at any moment.
Safe places were naturally hard to find...
Exhausted after the long day, they both soon fell asleep together.
Vya opened her eyes. She said nothing, just quietly gazed at the pink glow of Elysia.
Kevin and Mei were fast asleep, and had even unconsciously embraced each other.
Vya covered her mouth, stifling a giggle. The big brother and sister must be what the books called 'lovers,' right? They get along so well~ (*︾▽︾)
Vya tiptoed to the window.
In the darkness, Elysia's pink light shone like a beacon. It should be fine to go find Sister now...
Vya set off. If anyone had been watching then... they would have seen a streak of pink light.
Zipping through the black of night.
A pity no one could see it...
A pity the streets were utterly empty now, save for a few lonely streetlamps casting their pallid glow in the deathly silent dark.
On Elysia's side, she and her squad members had spent the day clearing out quite a few Honkai Beasts, including one twenty-meter-tall Chariot-class.
Even she was seeing one that large for the first time...
With the day's battles temporarily over, Elysia was just about to ask Mobius whether Vya had been behaving...
When she caught sight of that streak of pink light.
Elysia understood immediately. Why was Vya here?
'How could Mobius do this? She promised to take good care of Vya...'
'No, no. Mobius~ I'm going to be angry. This time, I absolutely must make Mobius wear a little dress to make up for it...'
Thinking this, Elysia hurried towards that direction.
Her figure, too, swiftly vanished into the night.
