Chapter 5 - Chapter 3

Three hours of humanities, and the professor can talk for the full three hours, oh my god. At least it's only a six-week class—my next class, at three ten pm. So I can just chill in my room before them.

This is another reason why I can't make friends because I'm always avoiding people, watching people, and eavesdropping like the creep nobody looked for. From a distance, I saw Damien wearing headphones and pretty much in his own world. I guess I should say good morning.

As we got a bit close, I slowed down to greet him. "Good morning-" he bumped into me, not on purpose, but like someone who didn't see me? "Oh, sorry." He turned around, his eyes jocked to me, but when I moved, they didn't move…. "Umm Damien?" His expression softened. "Oh, hey, Jac, what's up, dude?" I raised an eyebrow and waved my hand in front of his face, but no reaction. "I was just trying to say good morning….did you see me?" he shrugged his shoulders, "I probably did, but everyone looks like spots today."

He could see last night, but not today? "Shouldn't you be wearing glasses then?" If his sight is that bad, why would he even consider stepping out without them?? "I don't wear glasses, don't want people calling me four eyes, you know." What?!? "You literally can't see…, don't you have contact lenses?" I grab his arm, moving him aside from the other students walking by, since apparently he's blind.

"Oh yeah, but I ran out this morning. I thought I had more. Yeah, I was wrong.., but after class, I'd go buy some more." My jaw dropped from the nonsense. I didn't believe he was saying it. "How can you buy them if you CAN'T SEE?" He rolled his eyes. Who wasn't facing me! "Dude, I'm fine."

"Yeah, but how are you going to take notes?"

"I don't take notes anyways."

"How are you going to see what the professor is explaining?"

"I don't need to see, I'm a bit blind, not deaf."

"Yeah, but-"

"You're killing me with questions."

I stopped because I just really couldn't believe how stubborn he is right now. Fake poking at his eye, and there's no freaking reaction. You can't make this up…

"How about we just go get your contacts now, so you don't get hit by a car later?" My class isn't til later, he might miss his, but he can't see anyway, so what's the point?

"Nah, I gotta get to class, but I'll see you later, man." You won't see me at all, what the frick! He walked around me, and I watched him walk straight into a pole that was literally in front of him. He rubbed the top of his head. "Fuck I thought that was on the other side!" I couldn't help but cross my arms and shake my head.

"You lost your bearings, huh?" frozen like he's trying to get some visual clue about where he was. "Just give me a second, I'll figure it out." Give him a second? More like an hour.

"Can we just go get your contacts, Damien? Just email the professor later that you didn't make it to class because of an emergency." After five minutes, he let out a long sigh. "Yeah, yeah, okay fine."

I grabbed his hand. I didn't know what else to do to help someone who couldn't see, except grab his hand and guide him off campus. When was the last time I held someone's hand? Let alone someone who wasn't family. I glanced behind, and he was looking straight with a slight tip of his head, trying to see the things he couldn't.

He told me where he usually goes to get his contact lenses. I knew where it was because I'd been there a few times myself, so taking him there wasn't hard. When we entered the pharmacy, everything was pretty straightforward. Warmer in here than outside for sure. She handed them to him, and I guided him to the restroom's mirror, which was empty. White marble floors and that weird, clean smell, I could never figure out what it smelled like. I watched him open the pack, decided to sit on the sink's countertops. I just always wanted to do that, and since it's empty, why not?

I sorta enjoyed this side quest, even though Damien was blind the whole time. It gave me something to do other than be caught in my head until my next class.

When I turned to look at him, he had already put his lens in and was staring at me. "Oh..can you see?" He gave me a funny face with a raised eyebrow. "Yeahhh..why you up there?" I smiled and hopped off. "Well, at least you won't be getting by cars anytime soon, thanks to the best person in the whole world," I said confidently and sarcastically, proud.

"Yeah, I know." He paused and smirked, "Thanks."

Damien went back to campus, and I ended up going to get myself some iced coffee. It's chilly, but it's never cold enough for iced coffee. I should be happier, but I think this time of the year is one of the saddest.

Even if I wanted to be a bit happier, a little more optimistic on the inside, I'm just not. Fall is the time of the year when everything slowly comes to an end, to be buried in white.

That's how I see myself sometimes, just a never-ending fall season, but without the holidays. I'm just an empty canvas of a season I don't want to be a part of.

I can't wait for the next season of my life.

"I don't have enough money, can I take some things out? I'm sorry…" Huhh..oh, course if I go over three item voids it'd be me who gets in trouble for taking it off….so now I have to call a manager. Well, I should've expected this at least once every shift; no use in complaining.

It's not a big deal, just my line will get longer, and if it gets longer, that means angry customers.

Angry customers who I don't care about. I don't feel so good today, even though yesterday nothing bad happened. I just wish I had called out, taken today off, and just sulked in my room until I was ready to face people again.

The fact that I still have so much life to live, or "things to experience." I feel like I'm just waiting it out. Skip to the good part already.

Tomorrow is my day off from work and classes. I'm not doing anything, imma just hibernating.

"Jaci, dude." Damien came into the break room, like he was about to investigate me for stealing his candy bar. "Yes?" I probably had the most. "So what are you doing tomorrow?" He asked, Um, sleep, eat, cry, repeat, but not like imma say that. "I don't have anything going on tomorrow. Why?"

"Wanna go to the movies?" A movie? It's been a long time since I've gone to one. I did go by myself one time, but then I realized people go to the movies with someone or in groups.

The way his gray eyes are piercing through mine, god help me. He's slightly taller than I am.

"Okay…, we can go to the movies." Just please stop looking at me before my heart gives out on me.

"Okay, give me your number."

"M-my number?!"

"Yeah, so I can text you." It's the first time a guy has ever asked for my number. Does this mean we're friends? I mean, I'm not gonna ask him that… I'll just assume we are until he tells me I'm not.
