Chapter 3 - Finding Wolfdogs

Asher's POV

The younger pups were playing at the edge of the cave, taking turns using the waterfall to splash one another when Alex told them to stop. He apparently had picked up a scent that was somewhat familiar to him.

"Go stand by Mother and Ari." Alex commanded.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"The scent of the humans from last night, I smell it, it means they're close by." He scented the air and turned to me answering my question. "We need to make sure everyone stays away from the entrance so they don't see us."

We moved everyone as far back into the cave as possible and Alex told Momma and Ari what he scented. Letting them know they needed to keep the younger pups back. As they were moving further back into the cave I could hear the echoes of the voices outside.

"Little Wolf, what are you doing?" The man asked.

I wondered who he was calling little wolf, outside of werewolf culture it isn't a common nickname.

"I think I see something behind the waterfall, I just wanted a closer look." A small feminine voice says. Her voice sounds so angelic that I almost want to take a peek myself but hold myself back, I can't expose my family, my pack.

"Honey, that's not safe." Another female voice says, it's older, sounds closer to Momma's voice.

"I wasn't planning to climb up there, just wanted to get closer to see if I was seeing things. I promise." The angelic voice said.

I was both relieved and disappointed at the same time. I want to see who the voice belongs too but don't want anyone to find us.

Alex mind links me, 'I feel the same disappointment, I don't know why but even last night I was drawn to her.' Being twins we can usually feel and understand each other's emotions better than others, it is almost like we share them all the time.

'Maybe we are meant to know her?' I suggest.

'I don't know but we can't risk exposing our pack.'

'I know you're right.'

Once we decide we can't risk exposure we slip further behind the falls and further into the cave.

Ellie's POV

Mom allowed me to walk a little closer because Dad said he would come with me. When we got closer to the fall I was a little disappointed to not see anything like I thought I did, Dad said it could have just been fish falling with the water but I don't know.

Shortly afterwards we clean up and head back to camp. We have one more night here before we have to go back home so I can get ready for school.

I was so happy we went down to the pool this time, it really is beautiful, I am not sure why I was so disappointed to not see anything when we got closer to the waterfall but I can't wait until it gets warmer so I can go swimming and really explore around the waterfall. Maybe it's just my curiosity, my willingness to explore the world around me, especially when it comes to nature.

Alex's POV

Shortly after the family leaves my wolf gets very anxious. He wants to see the girl, for whatever reason he seems drawn to her like she's important to us but she's just a human so I can't think of any reason we should be drawn to her. I know Asher feels the same way. It's strange but I want to know her, to become her friend.

'Ash, want to go for a run?' I link my twin.

'Yeah, my wolf is extremely anxious.' He links back.

'Mine too.'

"Mother, Asher and I are going to go for a run, our wolves want to be let out."

"Okay dear, just be careful. Mind link me if there's any trouble."

"We will." Asher says, practically bouncing with energy.

Before leaving the cave we scent the air to make sure no one is around and we shift. Our wolves are practically giddy and are pouncing on one another and getting as much energy out as possible.

Asher's wolf decides he wants to play a game of chase and bolts with my wolf chasing after him. Before we know it I tackle him and we are rolling around when we hear a surprised gasp to our left. We both look over and see the most beautiful smile coming from a little girl around our age. She squats down and just watches us. Asher and I don't move. We want to but we don't want to scare her, we must look like wild wolf pups to her.

Then she starts to speak, "Hello, wolfies, you are both so beautiful, I hope it's okay that I sit here, I promise I won't come close or hurt you. I love wolves, you are my favorite animal. My parents have a wolf dog sanctuary, and I love watching them all play. I just want to observe I promise."

"Why did I even bother telling them all that?" She mubbles to herself, "They don't understand what I am talking about. I hope they don't run away."

Both Asher and I cock our heads at her and she giggles. Her voice, her giggle, both are so amazing.

"I know you probably don't understand me but that was so cute both of you turning your heads at me at the same time. It's like you are twins and do the same thing." She chuckles. If only she knew.

"You know, my family and I come camping up here all the time and we have never seen a pack of wolves. I hope you guys are okay and not lost." She says thoughtfully. It's true there's no wild wolves in this area, our pack was the closest wolves around but we never showed ourselves to humans, it was always to risky father would say.

Asher desides to stand up from his spot and inch his way over.

'What are you doing?' I look at him moving closer while linking.

'My wolf and I want to be closer to her.' He says.

'You might scare her.'

'I won't, you heard her, her family has a wolf dog sanctuary, she's use to wolves or at least dogs that are half wolf.' He scooches closer and I look over to see our girl smiling even bigger. Wait 'our girl' I think to myself.

Asher gets as close as he can and lays his head by her feet looking at her with huge puppy eyes. She giggles again.

"Do you want me to pet you?" She asks and Asher nudges her hand with his snoot. "Okay, okay," she giggles some more and begins scratching his ears then petting him, his wolf lets out a slight purring sound and she lights up. I watch them both and decide I want to feel her touching me too so I inch over as well. Once I get closer to her she puts up her hand letting me sniff it and come to her. She then starts petting me and scratching my muzzle and it feels amazing. My wolf gets a little too excited and decides to lick her face. She laughs so hard at that that Asher decides to join in causing her to fall on her back and laugh harder.

We are both so mesmerized by her laughter that we don't even realize when her parents approach.

"Honey, what has you laughing so, OH!" Her mother says eyes bulging taking in the scene.

"Wow!" Her father says. "Looks like our little wolf found some other little wolves." He looks around, "Babe, I don't believe there are any packs around here, I wonder if these are wolf dogs someone abandoned in the woods."

"It's possible dear, they are too friendly and comfortable with Ellie to be wild." The mother responds. "What should we do? They can't stay here without a pack or grown wolves to keep them safe."

"Well it looks like they like our little wolf, maybe Ellie can get them to come back to the car with us and we can bring them to the sanctuary. Luckily it's not far from here."

That statement puts both Asher and I on alert. 'Shoot Alex what do we do? If we run back to the cave we will expose our family and they may try to set up some type of trap to capture us if we try to go somewhere else.'

'I don't know, we need to link mom.'
