And then they were there.
Damon and Nicklaus burst into the clearing, moving with the kind of speed that was almost impossible to track, and the second they saw us, they stopped.
Everything went very, very quiet.
Damon's expression was the kind of carefully controlled that meant he was furious and working very hard not to show it. Nicklaus looked like he was doing complex math in his head about which way to handle this and not liking any of the answers.
"Rowan," Damon said, his voice low and dangerous. "Step away from him."
"I'm fine," I said.
"That wasn't a request."
"I know. I'm still fine."
"Rowan." Nicklaus's voice was steadier but no less intense. "Come here. Now."
I didn't move.
Lucian's hand came up, a subtle gesture that said stay without words.
"he's been meeting with me for days," Lucian said, his voice calm and measured. "Voluntarily. I haven't hurt him. I have no intention of hurting him."
