"Can I ask you something?" I said eventually.
"Of course."
"Why are you really here? And don't say curiosity or boredom. There's something else."
He was quiet for a long moment, his hands stilling on my back.
"Because I know what it's like to fail someone who mattered," he said finally. "And I've decided I'm not going to let that happen again."
"Who did you fail?"
"Someone important. Someone I should have protected better." His voice was careful, measured. "That's all I can say right now."
"That's frustratingly vague."
"I know. But it's the truth I can give you."
I thought about pushing, but something in his tone said that this was all I was going to get. "Okay. But someday, when you're ready, I want the full story."
"Someday," he agreed. "When the time is right."
His hands continued working, gentler now, more careful.
