"Also," I added, "I don't know if you're going to hurt me. But something in my gut says you won't. And right now my gut is pretty much the only thing I trust because my brain is exhausted."
"Your instincts are good."
"Are they though? I got lost in the woods twenty minutes after being left alone."
This time he definitely smiled. "That's fair too."
"For what it's worth," Lucian said after we had been walking for a few minutes, "you're handling this remarkably well."
"Handling what? Being pregnant or meeting the vampire lord who's been stalking me?"
"Both."
"I'm not handling anything well. I'm just too tired to care about pretense anymore."
"That's fair."
We walked in silence after that, and slowly, gradually, the trees started looking familiar again.
