The Encounter
The Alphas left before dawn.
I heard them moving through the house in that particular quiet way people moved when they were trying not to wake someone but still needed to be efficient about leaving. Footsteps in the hallway. Low voices. The sound of the front door closing with careful softness.
I stayed in bed, eyes closed, one hand resting on my stomach which had stopped being flat approximately two weeks ago and had committed fully to the reality of carrying three rapidly growing children.
Six months, I thought. If I was using human terminology. Six months pregnant with triplets in a body that was doing the whole process in two.
My back hurt.
It had been hurting for three days now, a low persistent ache that Dorian kept telling me was normal and that I kept hoping would go away anyway.
It didn't.
