"You're being suspiciously silent," I said to her on day four of the symptoms.
[ I'm just being observant. ]
"You're always observing. This is different."
[ The pregnancy is progressing exactly as it should. Your body is adjusting exactly as it should. There's nothing to say. ]
"There's always something to say. You've never been quiet just because there's nothing to say."
A pause. Then, very quietly: [ I'm proud of you. ]
I stopped what I was doing, which was attempting to eat toast without my stomach staging a rebellion. "What?"
[ You're handling this well. Better than I expected. ]
"I'm barely handling it at all."
[ You're still here. You're still functional. You're still making jokes even when you feel terrible. That's handling it. ]
Something in my chest did a complicated thing. "Thanks, Nyphrin."
[ Don't make it strange. ]
"Too late."
