Maxx immediately picked his toast back up.
Nicklaus refilled his coffee.
Damon looked at me for a second longer than everyone else, and in that second, past the Alpha authority and the careful composure and the very slight defensiveness from the conversation we had just had, I could see it. Clear as anything. The worry. The bone-deep, completely unguarded worry that had been sitting behind his eyes since I fainted yesterday and hadn't moved an inch since.
I looked back at him.
"I'm okay," I said quietly. Just for him. Not for the room.
Something in his face shifted. Just slightly.
"I know," he said.
He didn't sound entirely convinced.
But he picked up his coffee, and the kitchen filled back up with the noise of people eating breakfast and the low murmur of conversation and the sounds of a morning that was, despite everything, just a morning.
