I don't know how long I sat there on that couch.
Time felt weird. Like it was moving too slow and too fast at the same time. The fire kept crackling, and Damon stayed beside me, quiet but present. Every now and then he'd shift slightly, or his hand would tighten on my shoulder, but he didn't say much.
I appreciated that. I didn't really have words right now anyway.
My mind kept replaying everything. The doors slamming open. All those vampires flooding in with their hungry eyes. The way Nicklaus had moved, so fast and deadly. The sound of fighting. Damon pulling me away.
I kept seeing it over and over.
[ You should try to rest. ]
"I can't," I thought back at Nyphrin. "Not until he's back."
[ He'll be back. ]
"You don't know that."
[ I do, actually. Alphas like him don't go down that easily. Especially not to low-ranking vampires. ]
