A brand-new day.
Dexter was sleeping groggily when a burst of loud noise jolted him awake. It took him a few seconds to process what he was hearing.
High-energy Kevin and Veronica were getting busy upstairs.
Dexter chuckled helplessly, got out of bed, and headed outside.
There was no way he was staying inside to listen to that.
At the front door, he sat down on the steps, lit a cigarette, and looked out at the street.
The sunlight was bright. The street looked the same as always—nothing unusual, no cops running around.
Honestly, from a certain angle, it felt pretty peaceful.
After watching for a bit, Dexter pulled out his phone.
No missed calls.
That was a good sign. It meant the police hadn't gone looking for him at the hotel.
If I get through today, I should be in the clear, he thought silently as he put his phone away. Then he stood up and walked over to the curb.
The system had said that as long as he was in an open space, he could claim the Ferrari—no need to worry about people seeing it or thinking it didn't make sense.
So then…
Claim it.
The very next second—
A silver Ferrari sports car appeared silently at the curb right in front of him.
Seeing it, Dexter was genuinely happy.
Before coming to this world, he'd just been an ordinary office worker. Unless a miracle happened, there was no way he'd ever own a Ferrari in his lifetime…
This felt amazing.
Come on—what guy doesn't love a good car?
He didn't waste any time, hopped in, and slid into the driver's seat.
The key was already in the ignition.
He turned it.
Vroom—
That beautiful sound—wasn't it way better than the noises Kevin and Veronica were making upstairs?
Dexter smiled. He'd originally planned to wait until Kevin and Veronica finished, say goodbye, then head back to the hotel to shower and change.
He changed his mind.
He stepped on the gas and decided to head back first, then come back later.
Vrrr—vrrr—
The car rolled forward.
Just then—
Fiona stepped out of her house carrying clean clothes, heading over to Kevin's place to shower. When she heard the sound, she looked up—and saw Dexter, cigarette in his mouth, driving off in a brand-new Ferrari.
She froze on the spot.
A few seconds passed.
Only after Dexter was gone did Fiona snap out of it, muttering with envy, "Damn… he's loaded."
She kept walking, her mind inevitably wandering.
She walked into Kevin's place like it was nothing, glanced at the blanket on the couch, the mess on the coffee table, and heard the noise coming from upstairs.
"V, my place doesn't have hot water," Fiona said with a grin as she headed upstairs. "Mind if I shower here?"
"Sure," Veronica replied between breaths. "Just leave us some hot water."
"Got it," Fiona said. Then, a little curious, she added, "Hey—did Dexter stay here last night?"
The moment she asked—
Kevin and Veronica both froze, eyes widening as they looked at each other.
They both suddenly realized something.
"I totally forgot about him…" Kevin said blankly, stopping mid-motion.
"I forgot too," Veronica said, not embarrassed so much as guilty. "He definitely heard us, didn't he…"
Kevin nodded. "What do we do?"
Veronica thought for a moment, then asked, "Fiona, is Dexter still asleep?"
"Nope, he already left," Fiona said with a laugh. "Probably couldn't take the noise anymore. He took off in that Ferrari like a bat out of hell."
Hearing that—
Kevin: "????"
Veronica: "????"
"What Ferrari?" Kevin asked, totally confused. "He came here in my car last night."
Fiona had reached the bathroom door and paused in surprise. "A silver Ferrari sports car. Wasn't it his?"
Kevin frowned, muttering to himself. "He has a Ferrari?"
"So… just how rich is he?" Veronica said in shock.
Seeing that neither of them asked anything else, Fiona went into the bathroom and started her shower.
---
Dexter returned to the hotel.
No police cars in the parking lot.
Everything was smooth.
He went to his room, took a shower, changed clothes, then headed back out. He grabbed a few coffees and breakfast, got into the car, and drove back to Kevin's place.
Kevin and Veronica were done with their workout and were cleaning up the mess from last night's late-night food in the living room.
Then—
Dexter arrived.
The Ferrari's engine had a sound you couldn't miss.
As a guy who loved cars, Kevin instantly rushed to the window the moment he heard it.
One look—
And he saw Dexter parking the car, coffee and breakfast in hand, getting out.
"Jesus!!"
"A real Italian supercar—she's gorgeous!"
Veronica hurried over and whispered in shock, "That thing has to be worth hundreds of thousands, right?"
"Absolutely," Kevin said without hesitation.
Outside—
Dexter grabbed his stuff and was about to walk over when he spotted Kevin and Veronica at the window. He grinned. "You two finally done?"
Kevin flashed an awkward grin and moved fast, heading straight for the door. He opened it and jogged outside. "Sorry, man. We totally forgot you stayed over. We wake you up earlier?"
"You two are seriously relationship goals," Dexter said with a mischievous smile, then handed over the food. "Don't just stand there—help me out."
"Yeah, yeah," Kevin said, quickly taking it.
They sat down at the table.
Veronica apologized too. "Sorry, Dexter. We don't usually have people stay over, so it slipped our minds."
Dexter took a sip of coffee. "No, no—it's my fault. I'm the guest. This is your place. You saying that just makes me feel bad."
Kevin and Veronica weren't the type to overthink things.
Since Dexter said that, they dropped it.
But of course—Kevin couldn't help himself.
"Dexter," he asked, "Fiona said she saw you drive off in that Ferrari earlier. But you came here in my car last night. What's the deal with that thing?"
"Oh, that?" Dexter replied casually. "Looks like I'll be staying around here for a while, so I called someone yesterday to have my car delivered. It just arrived this morning."
"So that car's really yours?!" Kevin exclaimed dramatically.
"Yeah," Dexter said with a relaxed smile. Then he pulled out the keys. "Want to take your girl for a spin?"
The moment he said that—
Kevin's eyes lit up instantly, ready to say yes.
Veronica cut in first. "Maybe not. If we scratch it, there's no way we could afford to pay you back."
Dexter laughed. "What kind of person do you take me for? You think I'd make you pay?"
"Relax—even if it got totaled, I've got other cars."
As he spoke, he set the keys in front of Kevin. "Although… Kevin, you're pretty tall. If you drive it, you'll probably need to open the roof. Otherwise it might be tight. And it's freezing outside…"
Kevin didn't dare grab the keys. He instinctively looked at Veronica.
After a brief hesitation, she nodded.
Kevin's face broke into a huge grin as he picked up the keys. "Man—if I can drive a car like that even once, I wouldn't regret it even if I froze to death!"
Dexter immediately gave him a thumbs-up.
Legend.
"Hey, if you catch a cold, that's on you," Dexter said with a laugh.
