Dexter was slammed that whole afternoon.
He ordered the restaurant's sign, quickly designed and printed a simple job posting flyer, and then raced off to buy tables, chairs, and tableware. After that, he was on the phone to the gas and water companies to get the utilities turned on.
By the time he finished, it was evening.
Dexter headed back to the storefront and taped the job posting to the window glass.
The flyer wasn't long, but it summarized two main things:
1. Compensation: The salary was a starting \$5,000 USD a month, paid weekly—as is the custom here—plus tips.
2. Requirements: Candidates needed to have great figures and looks, proper manners, and dress appropriately... This section took up most of the space.
Done and dusted.
Dexter strolled over to the Alibi Room.
Kevin had already started his shift, parking his Ferrari right in the bar's parking spot.
Dexter glanced at his own ride, didn't give it much thought, and walked straight into the bar.
Behind the counter, Kevin beamed the moment he saw Dexter. "Dexter, your car is seriously cool!"
Dexter smiled, taking a seat at the bar. "Keep working hard; you can buy your own next year."
Kevin froze, then shook his head, chuckling. "I can only afford that in my dreams, man."
"You gotta have a dream. You never know; it might come true," Dexter replied.
The two started chatting.
A little while later, Tommy and Kermit walked into the bar together.
Dexter had gotten to know Tommy pretty well during the renovation, so he waved hello when he saw him.
Tommy smiled back, then sat down with Kermit.
Dexter watched the two guys for a moment and couldn't help but think about that scene from the original show...
In the bathroom, with "In the Air Tonight" playing in the background, the atmosphere gets heated, the two guys feel a certain way, and then, boom—passionate action...
Dexter couldn't hold it in and burst into laughter.
Kevin looked confused. "What's up? What's so funny?"
"Nothing, I just suddenly thought of something funny," Dexter replied, still smiling. He then got back to business, asking Kevin, "Do you have Fiona's phone number?"
"Yeah," Kevin got the wrong idea and gave a naughty smirk. "You want it?"
"Yeah. She mentioned yesterday that she was interested in working at my restaurant. I finished setting things up this afternoon, so I figured I'd call her and tell her to get a resume ready," Dexter explained seriously, knowing exactly why Kevin was smirking.
Kevin realized his mistake and looked a bit embarrassed. "Oh, right. My bad."
Soon after, Dexter called Fiona.
After over two days of searching, Fiona had finally found Aunt Ginger's remains about an hour ago. She was completely relaxed, soaking in the bathtub, glass of red wine in hand, eyes closed, enjoying a rare moment of peace.
Her phone rang.
Fiona opened her eyes with a slight annoyance, stood up, and reached for her phone in the clothes piled next to the tub.
It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" Fiona answered, lying back down in the tub as she did.
"Fiona, it's me, Dexter," Dexter said.
Hearing his voice, Fiona felt a strange flicker of self-consciousness and instinctively glanced at herself. "Oh, hey! Kevin gave you my number?"
"Yep, smart cookie. I'm at the Alibi right now; just asked Kevin for it," Dexter said. "So, my restaurant is hiring now. Are you still interested?"
Fiona heard that and immediately got excited, sitting up straight. "Yes, I am! What do I need to do?"
"Put together a resume and slip it through the door at my restaurant. The address is XXXX. I'll do the interviews in a couple of days," Dexter said in a strictly businesslike tone.
Fiona felt a momentary pang of disappointment but quickly shook it off. "Okay, I'll do it right away."
"Great. Talk soon. Bye."
"Bye."
Dexter hung up and slipped his phone into his pocket.
"Dexter, your efficiency is insane. You're opening so fast," Kevin complimented him.
"Time is money, man," Dexter replied with a smile.
The two continued to chat.
After a couple of minutes, Kermit brought up the death of Terry Milkovich.
Once that topic was opened, the Alibi Room naturally became quite a lively place.
Dexter, the one who actually committed the crime, was there tonight mostly to listen, so he drank his beer quietly, occasionally chiming in to see what the latest news was.
---
Outside Dex's Restaurant.
Two young, attractive women wandering around happened to spot the job posting taped to the glass. Then, they saw the pay.
They were instantly floored!
\$5,000 plus tips to hire a waitress!
That kind of pay was sky-high for a neighborhood like the South Side.
"It has to be a hookup ad, right?"
"These requirements aren't for a waitress; they're clearly recruiting high-end sugar babies."
"That restaurant owner is willing to pay big bucks just to find women."
"But, like, five grand..."
The two women chattered for a bit, then suddenly looked at each other.
"Should we drop off a resume?"
"Totally!"
This was the South Side. Who they slept with didn't really matter anyway, right?
The two women happily made their decision.
Before long, more and more people saw the job posting.
Driven by the outrageously high salary, the news of Dex's Restaurant hiring waitresses spread online.
About an hour later, a carefully dressed Fiona, with Veronica in tow, arrived at the restaurant door.
The restaurant entrance was practically mobbed.
"Damn!" Veronica exclaimed upon seeing the crowd. "With that kind of pay, I knew this was going to happen."
Veronica said this and then aggressively pulled Fiona through the throng.
By this time, dozens of resumes were piled up on the floor behind the glass door—quite a sight to behold.
The two first quietly looked at the resumes, then read the job posting.
Veronica and Fiona already knew the info on the flyer from yesterday.
After reading it again, Veronica gave Fiona a sly look and whispered, "So, are you going to think about my idea?"
Fiona gave a wry smile, didn't answer, and just slipped her resume through the gap in the glass door. "It's too crowded here. Let's get out."
The two stepped away from the crowd, turning to face it, not in a hurry to leave.
"This Dexter guy really knows what he's doing," Veronica genuinely praised. "With this stunt, most people in this area will probably know about the restaurant before it even opens."
Fiona smiled slightly and shook her head. "People in other districts will know too. They're busy posting this all over the internet."
"Huh, good point," Veronica nodded. "Want to swing by the Alibi? I think he's there."
Fiona hesitated for a moment. "Sure."
They didn't waste any more time and walked toward the Alibi.
