Chapter 42 - Chapter 43: Kevin’s Struggle, and Karen Shows Up

Fiona left Carl behind at home.

Carl was itching to go out and cause some trouble, and Dexter wasn't in a rush to check resumes, so he took Carl out for a fun little tear around the neighborhood.

They played until the evening. Dexter bought Carl dinner, and then they split up—Carl went back to the Gallagher house, and Dexter returned to the Alibi Room.

The moment Kevin saw Dexter, he grinned and happily handed him a beer. "Man, I gotta thank you. Because of your job posting, I've had way more customers tonight!"

The Alibi Room was certainly packed tonight, and many of the faces were unfamiliar, not the usual regulars.

Dexter looked around.

Interestingly, Eddie was there too, drinking alone and looking miserable.

After watching Eddie for a couple of seconds, Dexter looked back and teased Kevin, "Is that right? Well, sounds like you made a ton in tips. Shouldn't you share some with me?"

Kevin was genuinely surprised to hear that, paused, and then laughed, nodding. "Fine, I did make some extra money. I'll split half with you."

"Just kidding," Dexter laughed back, then casually added, "It's a shame this bar isn't yours. Otherwise, we could team up and send customers to each other."

Kevin, who was about to move away to start working, suddenly stopped short. His eyes darted around, and an idea sparked in his head.

Dexter, who was watching him, saw Kevin's expression and knew he had taken the bait. He smiled inwardly.

"That's a great idea," Kevin said excitedly after thinking for a couple of seconds. "But will your restaurant really have that many customers?"

"Hey, you doubting my cooking?" Dexter said confidently. "Just wait and see."

"That confident, huh? Okay, I'm holding you to that. If your place really pulls in the crowds, I'll figure out a way to buy this bar," Kevin was genuinely tempted and said so.

Regardless of whether he was ambitious or not, Kevin was always interested in making money.

Ding, ding, ding.

That's good enough, right?

Dexter smiled and nodded. "It's a deal. Once you buy it, if you want to remodel and make it look better, I can invest or lend you the money. Either way works."

Gulp.

Was this a stroke of sudden luck?

"Seriously?" Kevin asked, shocked and disbelieving.

"Absolutely," Dexter replied.

"Man, thanks a lot!" Kevin grinned, super happy.

Just as he finished speaking, a female customer not far away called out for Kevin to bring her a drink.

Kevin saw her, apologized to Dexter, and said, "We'll talk more about this later. I gotta get busy."

"Go ahead."

Kevin didn't delay, quickly poured a couple of beers, and brought them over to the woman.

Dexter recognized her.

In the original show, this woman was into Kevin and suggested having a "threesome" with her friend. Kevin was tempted but ultimately resisted the urge and turned her down.

Honestly, Kevin was a genuinely good guy.

After all, for a guy, turning down that kind of temptation isn't easy.

Dexter lit a cigarette and settled back to watch the scene unfold this time.

Kevin had barely set the glasses down when the woman looked up at him, stuck out her tongue, and started flirting. "Hey, handsome, you have an amazing body. It makes me want to lick you all over."

"..." Kevin's face instantly went awkward, and he gave a strained laugh. "Hahaha."

One of the woman's friends, seeing Kevin's reaction, got even more excited and puffed out her chest. "Hot stuff, what's your name?"

"Kevin. Kevin Ball," Kevin's eyes went right to the chest the friend had pushed forward.

"That's a special last name," the friend said seductively.

Kevin blushed. He couldn't handle it and quickly blurted out, "I have a girlfriend, sorry."

With that, Kevin immediately turned and darted back behind the bar.

Dexter naturally looked away and chuckled to Kevin. "I suddenly realized that opening a restaurant was a huge mistake! I should have opened a bar instead."

Kevin was still preoccupied and didn't immediately get the meaning. "Huh?"

"You definitely don't run into this kind of thing running a restaurant," Dexter said, nodding towards the woman.

Kevin finally understood and gave an embarrassed smile, not knowing what to say.

That innocent reaction was pretty funny.

Dexter continued to tease, "So, you gonna go for it? I guarantee they'll play with you, together."

"!!!!!" Kevin had genuinely not considered that possibility. His eyes immediately lit up with undeniable excitement. "You serious?"

Dexter nodded firmly. "A hundred percent sure."

Kevin was conflicted.

Damn it.

"I have a girlfriend," Kevin bit his lip, saying with resignation. "I guess I don't have the good fortune to enjoy that. You should go, though."

Dexter was actually kind of interested.

He's a guy, and a young one at that.

You know how it is.

But, well, the women's looks and figures were pretty average. He wasn't that into it.

Dexter shook his head. "I'll pass. I'm timid; I don't dare mess around."

"What a shame," Kevin said regretfully, glancing back at the women. Then, without another word, he got back to pouring drinks for the drunks at the bar.

A little while later, the same woman walked up to the bar and tried to flirt with Kevin again.

Kevin gritted his teeth, forced himself to resist the temptation, and repeatedly refused, stressing that he had a girlfriend.

"I don't care, and neither does my friend. Kevin, can you handle both of us at the same time?" The woman used her ultimate move, batting her eyelids seductively.

Kevin: "!!!! At the same time? Both of you?"

The woman smiled sweetly and nodded.

Kevin went silent.

This was killer!

After a few seconds of silence, Kevin tried hard to look serious. "Ahem, I can't, sorry. Actually, I'm getting married. I really can't."

Upon hearing this, even though she was looking for fun, that was a line she wouldn't cross. The woman immediately gave up, said no more, and went back to her friends.

"Damn!" Kevin watched her leave and cursed under his breath.

"Kevin, feeling the heartbreak?" Dexter, having watched the whole thing, couldn't help but say something.

Kevin forced a bitter smile.

"Haha," Dexter laughed and then checked the time. "Well, you keep on heart-broken. I gotta head back. See you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow."

---

The Alibi Room wasn't far from the hotel.

Dexter walked slowly, smoking a cigarette.

As he walked, a small figure suddenly burst out of a nearby alley and bumped right into him.

Dexter felt a slight sting from the impact and instinctively grabbed the person to steady them. It was then he realized...

Hey, it was Karen.

And she was a little disheveled, with part of her chest exposed.

What the heck was going on?

Confused, Dexter looked into the alley Karen had just bolted from.

The alley was empty.

"Help me, handsome! A thug tried to rape me," Karen cried, clutching Dexter's arm tightly, looking up at him tearfully and with a delicate, helpless expression.

Dexter: "?????"

Rape?

Seriously, Karen, if that were true, you'd probably be delighted, wouldn't you?

So, what was this poorly-produced, dramatic scene all about?

What genius came up with this?

Dexter was certain Karen was lying her ass off.

The question was, why?

So far, Karen had no beef with him.

But someone who did have beef with him, plus Karen showing up...

Heh.

It must be stupid Lip!

He's just recovered enough to walk, and he's already planning to cause trouble for me?

You're something else, pal.

Figuring it out, Dexter gave a cold smile. He had an idea: he would play along with her little scheme.
