[VOLUME 11: THE ETERNAL CHASE][LIFE: #48][LOCATION: 5TH AVENUE INTERSECTION]
Elara Vance was running late for her "Introduction to Quantum Mechanics" lecture, which was ironic, because she felt like she existed in two places at once.
Physically, she was sprinting down 5th Avenue, clutching a thermos of coffee and a bag of day-old pastries.
Mentally, she was somewhere else. She kept seeing flashes of a speedometer hitting 200mph. She kept hearing the sound of a typewriter dinging. She kept feeling the weight of a shield on her arm.
"Focus, Elara," she muttered, dodging a businessman. "You are a student. You are broke. You do not own a racing car."
She reached the crosswalk. The light was red. The little orange hand told her to stop.
She stopped. She was a law-abiding citizen.
She reached into her pocket to check her phone. Instead, her fingers brushed against the plastic button she had found in the parking lot.
The Ignis Button.
