Alice's POV
I sat frozen in my office chair, with the phone pressed against my ear so hard it hurt.
"Who?" I finally managed to ask Agent Morrison. "Who paid for my baby?"
"Your real mother," he said, and I could hear papers rustling in the background. "Not the woman who raised you but your biological mother, a woman named Sarah Chen who gave you up for adoption when you were born."
"That's impossible," I said, my free hand going to my stomach protectively. "My mother died when I was eight."
"The woman who raised you died when you were eight," Agent Morrison corrected gently. "But your biological mother has been alive this whole time and she's been watching you."
"Why would she do this?" I demanded. "Why would she pay someone to artificially inseminate me without my knowledge?"
"We're still trying to figure that out," Agent Morrison admitted. "But Mrs. Hale, there's something else you need to know."
