Alice's POV
I woke up to beeping machines and white walls and for a confused second I thought I was back in the first hospital, that everything after had been a nightmare. But then the pain hit, cramping low in my abdomen, and I remembered the blood, the explosion, Victoria screaming.
"You're awake," a nurse said, appearing at my bedside with a gentle smile. "How are you feeling?"
"My baby," I said immediately, my hand going to my stomach. "Is my baby okay?"
The nurse's smile faltered and my heart stopped. "The doctor will be in shortly to discuss everything with you," she said, which wasn't an answer at all.
"No," I said, trying to sit up despite the pain. "Tell me now, is my baby alive?"
"Mrs. Hale, please try to stay calm," the nurse said, pressing a button that I assumed called for the doctor. "Getting upset isn't good for you right now."
"I need to know if my baby is alive," I repeated, my voice rising to a near scream.
