Alice's POV
I tried to sit up but pain shot through my shoulder and Bryan gently pushed me back down.
"You need to rest," he said, his face torn between staying with me and going to deal with his mother.
"Go," I told him, even though every part of me wanted him to stay. "Your mother has Sophia, you need to handle this."
"I'm not leaving you alone," Bryan said firmly, pressing the call button for a nurse.
"I'll stay with her," a voice said from the doorway and we both turned to see Victoria standing there, looking pale and weak but alive. She had an IV pole with her and was wearing a hospital gown, but she was on her feet.
"You should be in bed," I said, surprised to see her up.
"So should you," Victoria said with a small smile that didn't reach her eyes. She walked slowly into the room, each step seeming to cost her energy. "Go deal with your mother, Bryan, I'll make sure Alice is safe."
