The laundry stairs smelled of detergent, wet concrete, and old metal.
Minh climbed without touching the rail.
The first door without a handle waited on the third floor exactly where Quân said it would.
It was slightly open.
Too easy.
Do not enter the first door that opens.
Minh passed it.
For three steps, nothing happened.
Then speakers crackled above him.
Huyền Kha's voice entered the stairwell like it had always belonged there.
"Good. Lục Hoa reached you in time."
Minh stopped.
"Where is Hạ Yên?"
"Past the emotional layer."
"I asked where."
"And I answered what matters."
A screen flickered to life on the wall ahead, probably stolen from a tutoring classroom. Huyền Kha appeared seated at a desk, clean shirt, mild expression, one bruise still faint at the jaw from their last exchange.
He looked healthier than Minh wanted.
"Ernst Thälmann was the school mask," Huyền Kha said. "Lâm was the hook. Quân was the hinge. You have moved through all three."
Minh's hands opened.
"You talk like that makes people less real."
"No. Real people produce better data."
Gomboc surged.
Thiên Phú surfaced separately:
"Delay tactic. Objective: locate Hạ Yên."
Minh breathed through both.
"You ran last time."
Huyền Kha smiled.
"I reported."
The screen behind him showed a diagram of the building. Three routes pulsed blue. One red point marked Minh's position.
Then the diagram changed.
Rooms rearranged into questions.
"You settled the emotional layer outside," Huyền Kha said. "Now we test the useful one."
The lights in the stairwell went out one by one.
Doors opened above and below.
Not the first.
Not obvious.
Not safe.
Minh looked at the screen until Huyền Kha's face reflected faintly over his own.
"You didn't build a prison," Minh said.
Huyền Kha's smile warmed.
"No."
Minh understood then, and hated that understanding felt like stepping into the trap on purpose.
"You built a questionnaire."
"A questionnaire that moves," Huyền Kha said, "is more honest."
The first sound began behind the upper door.
A basketball hitting rim.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The building smelled like old lessons.
Marker ink. Damp paper. Air-conditioning filters nobody had cleaned properly. A faint medicinal sharpness underneath, wrong for a tutoring center, too controlled to be accident.
Minh moved through the back stairwell with his hand near the wall but not touching it. Touch was information, but information could be poisoned. Lãnh Phong had taught him to distrust rails. Lâm had warned him about convenient routes. Hạ Yên had taught him, without meaning to, that rooms could be designed around what bodies revealed under stress.
So he climbed like a person already being watched.
The first screen turned on before he reached it.
Huyền Kha's face appeared with the calm of a student presenting homework. No anger. No theatrical villain voice. That made him worse. Lao had wanted Minh to feel domination. Huyền Kha wanted Minh to feel observed.
"You're late," Huyền Kha said.
Minh checked the corners instead of the screen.
One camera above the old attendance board. One mirror angled near the ceiling. A strip of tape on the floor where someone wanted his feet.
"You're not here," Minh said.
"Part of me is."
"Data isn't a person."
Huyền Kha smiled. "People become data when they repeat honestly."
The sentence landed with Hạ Yên's absence inside it.
Minh felt Gomboc rise with heat under his ribs.
A breath later, Thiên Phú surfaced in a separate cold line, offering another way to simplify the room.
He accepted neither.
Instead he looked at the map until he found what it refused to show: a route that existed only if the diagram wanted him to ignore it.
The heat under his ribs urged one answer. A separate coldness in his mind offered another. Minh let both exist without letting them meet. That, he realized, was becoming his real training: not silencing the voices, not obeying them, but refusing to let either one sign his name.
The stairwell light blinked in a bad rhythm.
Not broken. Programmed.
Two seconds bright, one second dim, then a longer pause near darkness. Enough to make the eye adjust badly. Enough to turn each step into a small decision. Huyền Kha's trap did not roar. It accumulated inconvenience until the body paid attention to the wrong thing.
Minh crouched before the first landing and smelled the rail without touching it.
Sharp. Metallic. Cleaning agent over something numbing.
Quân had not lied.
Minh took a tissue from his pocket and brushed the rail lightly. The tissue came away with a faint sheen. He photographed it, then left it folded on the step where the camera could see.
Huyền Kha's screen flickered.
"You are becoming difficult to frame," he said.
"You keep giving me props."
"Evidence."
"Same thing if I hold it first."
That made Huyền Kha smile with genuine interest.
Minh hated that interest more than mockery. Mockery wanted power. Interest wanted continuation.
On the wall map, the blue routes pulsed again. Minh watched the timing of the pulses instead of the routes themselves. The false left path blinked half a beat after the stairwell light. The right corridor blinked before the light changed. Automated overlay, not live tracking.
Not perfect.
That mattered.
Huyền Kha built systems that looked all-seeing because frightened people filled in the missing parts.
Minh stopped filling.
Minh did not trust the moment of understanding. Huyền Kha wanted him proud of solving things. Pride made the next solution sloppy. So Minh checked the map again, then the floor, then the camera position. Only after the same answer survived three kinds of looking did he move.
Only after moving did Minh realize his breathing had matched the blinking light for three cycles. The trap had reached him more quietly than fear. He changed rhythm on purpose. Inhale on darkness. Exhale on light. Refuse the room's timing.
The changed breathing helped. It reminded Minh that even when the room controlled light, sound, and route, it did not yet control the inside of his lungs.
